To think that botox, fillers, and other facial procedures are becoming too common?

I've just seen the recent pictures of the lovely Shania Twain. She's had so much facial work done that she looks unrecognizable! I find this such a shame given how naturally beautiful she's always been!

I also feel that facial work is causing a division between rich and poor women. I'm not sure what the answer to this is though?

See, I don't want to look like Demi Moore. I want to look like my mum. I don't expect anyone will believe me but it's true. I am in my fifties and have had no tweakments, and will have none.

I also don't want my DD to think she needs to look young to be worthy of love and respect.

Good for you. I really think we are hurtling backwards in terms of being valued for more than how we look, and the patriarchy is not entirely to blame. It’s utterly depressing how vain women are now.

tetralaw · 10/05/2024 10:02

Tbh all those ladies who using it, looks quite similar- they became to have a very similar features.

FatFemale · 10/05/2024 10:19

Its also the teeth thing too. Yes, missing or badly misaligned teeth can look bad (i have slightly misaligned teeth, i admit) but these days everyone has those perfect, uniformed completely un natural looking white teeth. I love to see people with natural teeth! Its very sad that people feel they have to have major dental surgery to replace their perfectly healthy and natural teeth to fit in!

Scorchio84 · 10/05/2024 10:23

Oh the teeth?! I'd love to get braces, I have a slight overbite & it's something I'm looking into but there's no way I'd go to Turkey OR have the blinding white, can be seen in UV light, like Ross from Friends 😆

Pancakee · 10/05/2024 10:26

So much judgement and belittling of other women on this thread.

Personally I have Botox and it’s a miracle worker for me. I have it done very subtle every 4 months. I find that I hardly have to wear any make up and I don’t spend any money on skincare anymore.
I am actually not more than average vain and I feel valued by society with a without botox so don’t need anyone to feel sorry for me.

I don’t think it’s a trend that will ever go away. The difference is good work and bad work. Look at Demi Moore, Brad Pitt, Bradley Cooper. All have had great work done. Demi Moore looks 20 years younger than she is.

Demi Moore! Have you seen her recently? If she looks younger than her years it is because of good diet, exercise, good posture and good bone structure and skin tone. But the work she's had done has given her Joker mouth.

She did have a weird situation with her mouth. But she emerged a few months ago looking jaw-droppingly good. No doubt after having spent $250K on a full face refresh.

angsty · 10/05/2024 11:03

I have a completely crooked front tooth (my parents were too interested in other things when I was growing up to shell out for orthodontics for me) and I never got it corrected even when I absolutely could have myself (had orthodontics done to other parts of my mouth for non-cosmetic reasons). It's just part of me! It hasn't impeded my career, love life or anything else.

Met Gala photos still show weird shit going on with her undercheek, nasolabial folds, and adjoining areas around the mouth.

She's only 61, with excellent bone structure and the sort of skin that ages well. None of that was necessary, in my view.

Frankly, I think the "poor" women are doing better in this scenario!

I had orthodontics when young to correct buck teeth caused by thumb sucking. It worked, but I had to have the teeth next to my front teeth removed to make room. Now that I’m older and my gums have shrunk I still look a bit rabbity because my two front teeth are big compared to the ones next to them. I make a conscious effort when smiling to make sure they don’t overlap my lower lip. But they’re my teeth, I’d look like someone else if I had Hollywood teeth.

Moreorlessmentallystable · 10/05/2024 11:29

I would say these procedures are in line with all the fakeness, fake smiles, people faking happy families and happy couples in social media, now fake face and lips and cheekbones and Botox seem the norm with all the younger generations, obviously social media has generated some sort of body dismorphia, much worse than we had by looking at impossibly thin models on magazine covers.

KimberleyClark · 10/05/2024 11:34

I’m glad I grew up in the 60s and 70s and wasn’t constantly being bombarded with fake images of impossibly perfect looking stars.

Ereyraa · 10/05/2024 12:02

A little bit of Botox done properly isn’t obvious, but those who know what to look for might spot it.

The fully frozen, dish face look practised by backsteet unqualified twits from their garden room, is.

TERFCat · 10/05/2024 12:06

Does anyone know of any famous people (men or women) who are shunning Botox and the like?

I believe Cillian Murphy said recently that he hadn't had any?

Jodie Foster. She's kept it all natural. She looked very well on it too in her latest film.

But that's probably the point isn't it? She looks very good for her age so it's not a concern for her.

CharlotteRumpling · 10/05/2024 12:31

Jolie Foster looked good in Nyad. Slim, fit and a bit wrinkly. But she may have had work done, who knows?
I recently saw Indira Verma on stage in Macbeth and she looked phenomenal, yet natural.

Not really. She's always been an attractive woman but she's not a Hollywood siren. She's attractive in any every day kind of way. For any Hollywood actress to say no to any kind of work must take some determination. All around you everyone is having something done.

If you are old no amount of plastic surgery and non surgical intervention will take that fact away.

You're right, Botox doesn't take years off you but what it does is "freshen " you up, like you've had a decent sleep or a break away at a spa or similar.. no one looks younger having had Botox but make up sits easier & you use less plus you don't have to shove your face in a bowl of ice water to reduce eye puffiness

No, it won’t reduce your age in years, but it will reduce what age has done to your face, caused by bone ,fat, collagen and muscle loss, which affects every face in ageing. Some fare better than others due to lots of factors, care of face, rapid weight loss, smoking etc, Look at the before and after photos of a really good face lift. Sagging jowls and a turkey neck greeting you when you look in the mirror does nothing for your morale. No creams or tweakments will make any significant difference but a good facelift will take 10-15 years off you

ConsuelaHammock · 10/05/2024 16:53

It makes people look strange. There’s definitely a weird Botox look. The only problem is that they think they look really good. I have a teenage son. I’ve warned him about girls who are too vain and obsessed with their looks. I think it’s a huge character flaw tbh.

garlictwist · 10/05/2024 16:59

These threads always attract people who say they have botox but it's ok as "no one can tell".

I'm here to tell you - they can.

Pollipops1 · 10/05/2024 17:00

Also a lot of procedures look great in photos or when a face is still but in motion/animated things can look off.

laclochette · 10/05/2024 17:45

We need to stop blaming women for doing what society demands of them, and start blaming society for expecting the impossible from women. In a society where being young and beautiful wins you approval, opens more doors and reduces the criticism, direct and implicit, aimed at you as a woman, it's the rational thing to try to look younger and more beautiful. That is the sad fact. Women are obsessed with their looks because the world around them is obsessed with their looks - not because they have the moral flaw of vanity.
