To think that botox, fillers, and other facial procedures are becoming too common?

TERFCat · 09/05/2024 15:12

I've just seen the recent pictures of the lovely Shania Twain. She's had so much facial work done that she looks unrecognizable! I find this such a shame given how naturally beautiful she's always been!

I also feel that facial work is causing a division between rich and poor women. I'm not sure what the answer to this is though?

I thought it was a sign of intelligent v non-intelligent or lacking in self-esteem? And therefore nothing to do with money and everything to do with upbringing and brains and the ability to think for oneself and embrace differences/ageing?

Why take risks with the gifts you’ve been lucky enough to have been given? Anyone moaning about a dodgy tummy tuck in Turkey needs to have a word with themselves!!

These girls want to look this way. That's their choice and it's not our business.

I think that the fashion industry, social media, expectations of what girls and women should look like, and the effects all of that has on people, are everyone's business tbh.

It’s not really their ‘choice’ tho if they can’t move for adverts or social media posts showing them beauty ideals that they need to get surgery and fillers to obtain. It’s no wonder mental health and anorexia are such huge issues with young people right now. They’re under so much pressure — I’m so glad I grew up at a time when it wasn’t the done thing to constantly take pictures of yourself and post them for others to approve . It’s madness:

I do think for some people it can enhance if not too much is used, but you really do need to find a good person to do them, this was after my first filler, I have a pic of my 2nd and it’s horrible, 2 different people, I really should have gone back to the first place

Sorry but it’s still obvious. Your lips were fine before!

That’s fine for you to think that, trust me I’m not offended, I laughed when my dad said “have you had your lips done? I don’t like them” I told him he doesn’t need to because I do

Your "before lips" are what some having fillers hope to achieve. They do not need fillers!

Yea but there’s nothing wrong with a slightly less plump lip, or an uneven side. They’re part of being human. I wish people would just learn to love and accept themselves as they are and not give into the ridiculous pressure we are put under by big business - because that’s what’s behind it, people wanting to make money from insecurities. Would make life easier for everyone - we’re getting to the point where everyone looks the same as well which is just boring.

Edited

It’s a fair comment, these treatments aren’t for everyone, I like my first filler treatment, but nobody else need to, I accept comments from friends who disapprove, I have a few school mums I speak to that have had a small amount the same as me, and I know people that I think have gone too far, one family I know of, 2 sisters and their mum all get it all done, and I don’t like thinking it but I do think the amount they have had done is excessive, they post pics of their mum saying “doesn’t she look so young” I don’t think she does, she looks older than her age I think

RosaRoja · 09/05/2024 23:20

Pussycat22 · 09/05/2024 19:38

If you are old no amount of plastic surgery and non surgical intervention will take that fact away.

Exactly! What do you do with your neck, your hands, your arms, your skin brown spits, your posture, your teeth, your energy? We all age, and Botox, fillers, HRT, bio hacking and whatever else will not stop ageing.

Some of the looks are grotesque. Many younger people experiment with hormones and what have you, I suppose fillers and Botox are small fry.

Even that posting ‘doesn’t she look young’ about their mum is kind of weird. Youth is so fetishised in our society. It’s no wonder it’s full of paedos and women injecting themselves with potentially toxic substances - it’s seen as a huge failure to just age.. which is all we as humans can ever actually do. It’s madness.

My before were fine, yes, I just wanted them a little more even looking and a touch bigger, my top lip still has a little filler in now, bottom looks about the same as before I got any, I’ll not be getting any more until my lips are back to before, and even then I wouldn’t do what some do and get some, wait a week or 2 and add another ml on top and so on, some women have 4-5ml in their lips, that’s a teaspoon full 😳

CreamLampshade · 09/05/2024 23:27

The worst is when the lips are so stretched it looks like they are going to burst. They seem to need to be covered in lip balm to not crack and it looks really uncomfortable. I sound like a granny now and I’m only 39 but i just wish young women would stop prioritising beauty and aesthetics. There’s far more to life! (Abs this is coming from someone who used to spend all of her salary pretty much on clothes and makeup and wishes she’d started a house deposit instead and loved herself as she was because looking back I was fit!! - and still am! And yes I’m being a bit facetious but also not - it’s important to see the beauty in ourselves.)

They post so much about their mums looks, “doesn’t she look amazing” “my mumma looks amazing, look at her turkey teeth” etc.

I know it’s growing old disgracefully even to have a little bit of filler and Botox etc, my mum is always telling me “back in my day there wasn’t any of this” even told me eyelash extensions used to be for prostitutes, I’ve read that too I think, cumbrellas I think I read they were referred as.

i laugh it off though as I hear what people are saying, but if I want it I’ll get it done, my nan hates my tattoos, she hates my dads tattoos aswell

I feel so mean to be posting this but it’s just insane!

Omg. The spelling and grammar errors from a ‘professional’ would put me off if nothing else!!

You are right, and a year younger than me. I’m a hypocrite though (sort of) I agree mostly yet I get it done, because I want to lmao. I don’t encourage others to get it done (except a friend that kept saying she wanted to but was scared to go back, but she wanted them done again and kept being fake pervy over my lips 🤣

I don’t think you want to know what else can be done lol, there are all sorts of treatments I’m hearing about since I got interested in Botox and fillers, some baffle me and I’m not even sure what they are actually for 🤣

Lol I’m not sure I would boast about Turkey teeth!

I do think people should be able to do what they want with their bodies and faces, of course; including fillers. On the other hand, the ‘Overton window’ has shifted so far that our perceptions of what is normal have changed too. I think it’s more the norm to have these procedures than to not in the younger generation, which is sad and scary. I see beautiful girls who just can’t seem to be happy with themselves - there’s always one more tweak they want or an extra pound to lose at the gym from their perfect bodies.

i just wish they could experience the joy of being young, reasonably attractive, and crucially just not that focused on their looks because they’re having too much fun. I think that’s been lost to an extent from my experience with my 20 year old neice and her friends, and also the younger people I work with. They’re all so sensible and focused on being perfect. And they’re wasting the best years of their lives on this.

I’ve not heard of the overton window. Yes I fully agree that some start too young, one girl I know of was having fillers and Botox before I knew her, I met her in her early 20s, I started late 30s, not a huge difference in age really I suppose, I’m going to do the in my defence bit 🤣 in my defence I have 5 daughters ages 15, twin 9 year olds and twin 7 year olds, twins and then again 2 years later has aged me 🤣 I don’t want to look my age 🤣

CreamLampshade · 09/05/2024 23:58

God I thought you were about 25 in that pic @Tanyahawkes - never would have guessed you have five children! You are doing very well :)

Livelovebehappy · 10/05/2024 00:53

Like anything, as long as it isn’t done to excess, it can look very subtle, and can improve appearance. I have Botox. I have fillers. It’s my money, my face. I’m not insecure, but it’s like make up and having your hair done - just makes me feel and look better. I totally get why others wouldn’t have it, but I just don’t get how over invested people get about others having it done 🤷‍♀️

BoxOfCats · 10/05/2024 01:40

It's not really any different from wearing makeup or colouring your hair, other than fewer people can afford it.

Those are impermanent things. Unless you have a bad allergic reaction to hair dye, they cause no future harm.

The same cannot be said for Botox and fillers, which are not applied to the surface of the body but injected into it - a muscle atrophying agent and a substance which does not necessarily break down but migrates, and which cannot be removed with any guarantee of not causing further problems.

BoxOfCats · 10/05/2024 02:37

@frankincenseandmyrrh A bad allergic reaction to hair dye is still possible though, as is an allergic reaction to cosmetics. Botox isn't as permanent as surgery either. It's not as black and white as you're making out.

frankincenseandmyrrh · 10/05/2024 02:38

I didn't say Botox was as permanent as surgery. I did say a bad allergic reaction was possible to hair dye. Forgot to mention, Botox has been shown to migrate also.

Aww thankyou. Can you be my new best friend? I honestly do not feel as though I can look that age in a long time, I was 25 when I had my eldest daughter. I think since then I’ve mostly felt like I’ve looked older at times, 🤣

sunshine237 · 10/05/2024 05:35

'I just don’t get how over invested people get about others having it done 🤷‍♀️'

Because it is setting a very weird precedent / example for our children.
