If you're a guest ( not working, I.e in a profession where you go into someone's house ) aibu to think there is never, ever an excuse to not at least offer to take your shoes off in someone's home? My mind is always blown when someone comes to mine and leaves them on,

Yabu - I keep my shoes on
Yanbu - I take them off

You are being ridiculous.

Spinet · 26/04/2024 22:04

It's not that deep (as my 15yr old would say). Just ask people to take their shoes off if you're that bothered. 'no excuse' silliness.

YoureStuckOnMeLikeATattoohoohoo · 26/04/2024 22:04

I wouldn't even consider offering to take my shoes off in someone's house.

toomanyy · 26/04/2024 22:04

YANBU. There are millions of faecal germs on shoes, people bringing that into homes is just nasty 🤮

HirplesWithHaggis · 26/04/2024 22:05

Do you offer alternative footwear (shoe covers, slippers)? Would you prefer sweaty, fungus-y bare feet?

XenoBitch · 26/04/2024 22:05

I prefer people keep their shoes on. My home is gross... I don't want them to get grubby socks.

Dewdilly · 26/04/2024 22:05

That is way over the top. No one ever offers to take their shoes off. Why would you? That’s very weird. Unless maybe you’re staying for a few days and you’ve brought your slippers.

Allfur · 26/04/2024 22:06

Can't you just hoover after

SpringboksSocks · 26/04/2024 22:06

There are waaaay more important things to worry about in life imo.

But otoh, you could always do as my bf does and put your shoes on to walk from lounge to bathroom. Makes complete logical sense 🤨

TheLongWay · 26/04/2024 22:07

YABU

I've never lived in a house where I was expected to take my shoes off at home, so why would I do it in someone else's house?

I don't mind taking them off if asked, but it wouldn't even cross my mind to do it automatically. You can't expect that everyone is brought up the same as you

Teaalwayshelps · 26/04/2024 22:07

It's not the cultural norm in lots of places...that's a pretty good reason not to take them off I think.

Marchintospring · 26/04/2024 22:08

I've been in homes where you very definitely need to leave them on. In fact last week my food got stabbed with a bit of wire left on their stairs.

You do what makes guests comfortable if you invite people in.

Akso are you telling the police or ambulance crew to take off their shoes. They are professional ?

ChaosMoon · 26/04/2024 22:08

I have chronic pain in my legs and have to wear orthotics in my shoes too make it bearable. If I go barefoot, I'll be in tears within an hour.

But you're right. There's no excuse for not offering.

Topseyt123 · 26/04/2024 22:08

Stop being so ridiculous.

ASighMadeOfStone · 26/04/2024 22:08

Wouldn't dream of taking my shoes off unless asked to. And then I'd do some inner eye rolling.

Unless you're posting from Tokyo or somewhere where it's a cultural norm, but I doubt you are.

BewaretheIckabog · 26/04/2024 22:08

Being paralysed on the left side and needing footwear with an arch and ankle support would seem a good reason.

Also if you have partial paralysis bending down to remove footwear can be a pain in the arse.

Therefore YABVU and quite unaware to think there is never a reason.

TwattyMcFuckFace · 26/04/2024 22:09

Blimey, it doesn't take much to blow your mind does it OP?

Devilsmommy · 26/04/2024 22:09

I've only started doing this since I had my DS who's 19mo. I didn't want people in my flat with their shoes on when he was always crawling around putting stuff in his mouth. It made me stop and think about exactly what is on the bottom of shoes so now I'd always ask if they wanted me to take mine off too

TheLongWay · 26/04/2024 22:10

toomanyy · 26/04/2024 22:04

YANBU. There are millions of faecal germs on shoes, people bringing that into homes is just nasty 🤮

Don't be so ridiculous. Even if there were, your chances of catching something off a floor are pretty much zero

SkyBloo · 26/04/2024 22:10

Why would ordinary clean bare feet be "sweaty and fungus-y"?

A normal healthy individual doesn't have fungal infections in their feet as a matter of routine.

Its generally wearing shoes that actually causes sweaty feet & fungus.

Georgianbase · 26/04/2024 22:10

I usually offer out of politeness. It’s a thing that some people do others don’t

CheerUpFFS · 26/04/2024 22:11

This has stunned me! I couldn't imagine ever leaving my shoes on in someone else's home, they're filthy? They have been outside and that's getting worn in on the floors and the carpets. And to the poster asking about emergency services no I'd not expect them or anyone working like an estate agent or anything to take them off, but friends and family who can see my home is immaculate should imo. I'd be mortified if I somehow forgot and left my shoes on over a friends nice floors or carpet!

I'm actually shocked the amount of people who wouldn't offer to take their shoes off. I always do and insist everyone else does in my house too. I don't want muddy or dirty shoes traipsed round my house! Why would you keep them on indoors?

thistimelastweek · 26/04/2024 22:11

I prefer people to take their shoes off in my home but I never ask them to do so.

On that basis I always take my shoes off in other people's houses.

rainbowsparkle28 · 26/04/2024 22:12

Having worked in social care I can assure you there can be very good reason your shoes would remain firmly on 🙄...
