If you're a guest ( not working, I.e in a profession where you go into someone's house ) aibu to think there is never, ever an excuse to not at least offer to take your shoes off in someone's home? My mind is always blown when someone comes to mine and leaves them on,

Yabu - I keep my shoes on
Yanbu - I take them off

I hate the take your shoes off houses, so very precious

There’s so much more to my life than an immaculate home.

Most visitors or pop ins to us offer or simply take their shoes off… I tell them not to bother unless they want to. My kids take their shoes off, my husband needs a wee prompt (and then leaves them in the middle of the sitting room floor which pisses me off way more than the indoor outdoor shoe thing 🙈)

Re the hygiene reason- doctor for 22 years. Yet to meet a patient made significantly ill by someone wearing shoes indoors. Your chances of picking up a bug on the bus are vastly higher.

Indeed my 9yo told me last week… we have more bacteria cells on/ within us than human cells. I haven’t actually fact checked this but it’s plausible 🙈

I suspect in decades to come we’ll realise our current (v mumsnet) obsession with blasting all and any microbes with chemicals detergents, and dodging anything ‘dirty’ will not be the right course in terms of public health.

Well it's not like most people think they're going to get immediately sick from shoes, any more than a dirty kitchen floor, but it's nicer to offer.

I agree with your last paragraph but taking off shoes in the house is one way my policy of no chemical cleaning products air fresheners etc works. You don't sanitise everything to within an inch of its life because you don't need to because you don't bring as much dirt in.

In lots of cultures it's totally the norm and not precious at all.

Isthisreasonable · 26/04/2024 22:28

Always look for the shoes in the hall and remove shoes if there are some. I don't ever really feel relaxed or welcome in a shoes off house. Always conscious that the home owners primary focus is keeping their house pristine.

TeenLifeMum · 26/04/2024 22:29

Ew verrucas and people’s gross feet!

do people who insist on shoes off not bother washing their floors or shampooing their carpets? Most of my downstairs is hard floors so I just mop them 🤷🏻‍♀️ I walk bare foot a lot but would never ask a friend to. If they’re coming for a party all dressed up then have to change to slippers it’s a bit shit isn’t it? LBDs and slippers isn’t a look that would make most of us feel fab.

Bullshit.

Same...I'm shocked at how many people are walking around indoors in dirty outdoor shoes!! Their homes must be full of all kinds of shit! Truly grim 🤢

Wait until you find out they invented the vacuum cleaner!

ThisIsMyRubbishUsername · 26/04/2024 22:29

A relative once walked dog poo all through my house because they were the type that won’t take their shoes off. I think people who leave their shoes on tend to have dirty homes.

Bluevelvetsofa · 26/04/2024 22:30

If you expect visitors to remove their shoes when they enter your house, then you should expect any tradespeople or professional to do the same. How do you know where a plumber has been working for example, or an electrician, or any trade really. Estate agents have removed their shoes in my house.

OnTheBoardwalk · 26/04/2024 22:30

It's certainly not the norm in the UK

i only ever had one friend ask me to take my shoes off when she was in the middle of a huge renovation and had plywood and nails all over the floor.

SeismicSalad · 26/04/2024 22:30

CheerUpFFS · 26/04/2024 22:24

Me too!😂I remember my friend and I walking round London all day once, in the underground, public toilets, parks, all over and I was very relieved when we got back to mine and she slipped them off! I didn't want the residue from a London public toilet floor on my carpet!

What on earth do you think is going to happen as a result of this “residue”? 😂 Assuming you’re not eating off / licking the floor, I wouldn’t stress.

GladysOhli · 26/04/2024 22:30

I was inviting to a house earlier and too late realised it was shoes off despite being hard floor and it went on too long (impromptu visit and chat) that I felt awkward as heck once I realised. If it was me who visited then I'm still fretting about it now if it helps

StarDolphins · 26/04/2024 22:31

YANBU - I want people to take their shoes off & leave them in my tiled hall. I’m very upset if I have to ask them. It rains everyday & I don’t want muddy shoes on my carpet. I would prefer foot rot to a dirty carpet!

mice · 26/04/2024 22:32

I go into different houses every day for my job. I almost always take my shoes off, partly because I wear heels for work too!

I make a quick judgement, the same time as working out if I will accept the offered cup of tea. If my feet will get dirty if I remove my shoes then they stay firmly on.

I was brought up that it was polite to remove my shoes and most times people seem appreciative.

Catsmere · 26/04/2024 22:32

I'm starting to wonder if door mats and scrapers don't exist in Britain, if people are tracking crap into houses so often taking your shoes off has become a norm. Don't people wipe their shoes before they come in, at least in wet weather? I've never tracked stuff into my house. More likely to get it inside, if one of the cats has a "klingon" poo and I don't notice it in time!

FinallyHere · 26/04/2024 22:32

I take off my shoes when I enter my own house, and tend to do the same in other people's houses, too. It tends to happen unconsciously from years of a flip round my ear if I forgot

Some people say 'you don't have to' but by then I've probably already taken them off.

Anyone seeing into our house will see rows of shoes which seems to give them pause. Anyone to hesitates, I offer a set of disposable overshoes which while not ideal , gets the job done.

Simples, no drama

Eyesopenwideawake · 26/04/2024 22:33

Unless you frequently get so pissed you end up face down and licking the carpet I think the chances of catching something awful from a shoe sole is fairly unlikely...

Poorlymumma · 26/04/2024 22:33

Disability/old age?

It takes considerable effort for some people to take shoes off and put them on again. Particularly if there's no chair in the hallway.

anonissue · 26/04/2024 22:33

Love in the countryside and its way more a norm to remove shoes here as opposed to London. I love it. Cannot bear shoes inside!

Tbh not much but I'd hate any dirt or stains to get walked in on my floors, I am extremely fanatical about cleaning though so it's more the thought of it than the reality.

NisekoWhistler · 26/04/2024 22:35

Definitely not being unreasonable. I cannot understand anyone who doesn't offer. Why on gods earth would you wear outdoor shoes inside, unbelievable to think some people do!!

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 26/04/2024 22:35

@CheerUpFFS I 100% agree with you.

I was brought up that it is rude to have been asked to because you hadn’t.

Our Home is definitely shoes off house. Why? Because I like clean floors and carpet, not to mention the traces of dog shite or whatever on the bottom of shoes.

It’s not just me, all my friends and family are the same. Sometimes I don’t understand mn.

Vgbeat · 26/04/2024 22:36

I want people to feel comfortable in my house. Leave your shoes on , I do, I have friends who automatically take them off at the door despite me saying you don't have to but I think that's because they consider it home. My floors are mopped and hoovered and I don't plan on serving dinner on the floor.
