To think there's never an excuse for not offering to take your shoes off in someone's home?

If you're a guest ( not working, I.e in a profession where you go into someone's house ) aibu to think there is never, ever an excuse to not at least offer to take your shoes off in someone's home? My mind is always blown when someone comes to mine and leaves them on,

Yabu - I keep my shoes on
Yanbu - I take them off

I have three cats and a puppy! Hence keeping a very clean home. Tbh they don't cause much trouble if you keep on top of it, they're not dirty or messy. And yes I know my cats roam and come and go but they have no choice about footwear whereas visitors do! ( also my cats can do no wrong ever )

So your pets can walk shit into your house on their 16 paws but humans can’t? Ridiculous. Over and out.

AhBiscuits · 26/04/2024 22:56

People don't tend to have carpets downstairs so the floors are easily cleaned, no one is trailing crap into their carpets. I agree with no shoes upstairs.

PostItInABook · 26/04/2024 22:57

The hygiene nutters are out in force tonight I see!

OneTC · 26/04/2024 22:57

I wouldn't offer unless it was obvious.

I think if it's important to you and it's not made obvious then you need to ask.

OH culture and family remove shoes inside, my family don't.

Yes because they can't comprehend basic manners in the way a human, I.e not a cat or a dog can😂my cats don't see the lines I've hoovered into my carpet and trot shit all over them as a big fuck you do they lol. But reading some of the responses on here I feel like maybe some people would keep them on deliberately to spite someone for having high standards which is really awful actually!

I get well stressed out by people leaving their shoes on in my house. We have wood pigeons that poop on the path outside and I don't want that in my house, thanks.
And then we had the dog poo on the bedroom carpet incident - it's a bungalow and my bedroom is next to the front door. DH had just nipped in to get something and cba to take his boots off. Dog poo walked through.
I don't like asking people to take their shoes off. I expect them to notice that I have bare feet or slippers on and see all the shoes by the front door and twig that keeping their dusty, pigeon poo-laden shoes on is bad manners. If they want to use hotel slippers, I have some by the front door. One friend is really hostile about taking her boots off and I haven't solved that one yet. Apart from that she is lovely. In her house, everyone sits around in their trainers. I can't understand why they would be comfortable doing this.
Finally, the last time there was a debate about this on MN someone linked a study showing the amount of e-coli and other nasties on the bottoms of shoes. Why would you want to bring that into your home?

redfacebigdisgrace · 26/04/2024 23:02

What happens if they don’t have socks on? Eek. If my shoes are muddy I always offer. Otherwise I take my cue from the host but I really don’t like taking them off as I might have sweaty feet and I hate leaving sweaty footprints! In my own house I wear shoes downstairs as it’s hard floors, I normally take them off for going up the stairs. My house is pretty clean and I try not to think too much about germs! 🦠

How on earth do you hoover lines into a carpet, and why?

5128gap · 26/04/2024 23:03

No one I know would expect this and nor would I. And if anyone offered which is rare, they'd be told no, its fine. This goes goes for friends, family, casual visitors, literally everyone. In the whole of my 50 odd years, I can count on one hand the times I've been in a 'shoes off home', and I think the last time was when light carpets started to be popular, around 1988. Always amazed that this is a thing for so many on here.

mrswinter69 · 26/04/2024 23:03

We've just spent a fortune on new carpets etc and have this door mat. Self explanatory I think. 😁

I hate asking it's so awkward! In the least pompous way possible my house is spotless and it's obvious when you arrive so good manners should be removing footwear surely if you cam recognise its something important to the host? It's not difficult or superior standards it's just different standards.

Obviously that depends on the host though.

There are hosts with clean homes who don’t care if people keep their shoes on. My parents and grandparents sure didn’t and their homes and floors were clean. What mattered is people were comfortable and most left their shoes on. The ones that didn’t were usually those staying for awhile.

Saying that, we didn’t have the issues of different types of animal poo, constant wet weather, mud and whatnot.

They do round here. It is cold and damp a lot of the time. Only a couple of my friends have no carpets at all downstairs.
We have carpet in the hall, living room and study, and hard flooring in the loo, dining room and kitchen.

Unless you're posting from Tokyo or somewhere where it's a cultural norm

Its a cultural norm among much of the uk. I don't know anyone who wears outdoor shoes in the house. Carpet slippers are sold widely because its what many people wear indoors.

I take my shoes off and put on slippers when I get in purely for the sake of comfort - having slippers on is more comfortable than walking around in socks or bare feet. Nothing to do with hygiene.

Had lunch at a friends recently. She's just laid a limestone floor in her new kitchen. The floor was freezing. I tried to keep them off the floor but with a bad back balancing on a bench seat was a miserable experience.

I and a friend fled as quickly as was decent to go home and warm up.

So no I'd never ask someone to do this. Even we wear slippers because our kitchen tiled floor is Baltic in the winter

They're like a zig zag pattern with my hoover! Made with firm pressure and a bit of a knack I've got the hang of from tik tok. And why? Because it looks so lovely when it's all done!

Runnerinthenight · 26/04/2024 23:09

This is batshit! I have never, ever in all my years been asked to take my shoes off in someone's house. I don't know of anyone who expects it.

Just clean your bloody floors! Sometimes floors are dirtier than someone's shoes! We all have indoor shoes but we still come in from the outdoors wearing our shoes. We're not living on a farm!

Notthatcatagain · 26/04/2024 23:09

I hate it when people come into my house and take their shoes off and ignore me when I ask them not to, especially in the summer if they have no socks on, totally gross. I keep a basket of clean slippers by the door but the only person who wears them is my cleaner

This isn't on tbf, I'd always make sure the floors or my home was warm enough!

According to a recent mums net post you keep your shoes on when your trousers are too long and you need the extra height to make them fit.
