Abhorrent comments made about a persons height

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 25/04/2024 09:30

Calling someone who is below the average height, "pint-sized" is abhorrent
at the very least. A person's height is beyond the person's control and calling them "pint-sized," some may even say it's an ableist comment

Yesterday, during the PMQ's the lead was taken by the deputy heads of both Tories and Labour. Standing in for the Labour leader was Angela Rayner. She called the Tory leader, Rishi Sunak a "pint-sized leader" when she was losing the arugument

This reminds me of clowns at work who had nicknames for other people who did not fit in with their agenda. Often people will make disparaging comments about another when they feel threatened because of their own inadequacies.
Should she apologise for making these disgusting comments?

AIBU to believe these comments were necessary, inappropriate and disgustingly abhorrent.

Angela Rayner aims ‘pint-sized loser’ jibe at Rishi Sunak during PMQs

Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden countered the criticism by mocking the Labour deputy over her housing arrangements.

He's the Prime Minister, he's supposed to be running the country. He is not a child at school and shouldn't be treated like one. How do you think he can cope with tough decisions, confrontations with people like Putin if a comment about his height is such a big deal. I suppose all Putin needs to say is, "Hello shorty" and he can just take over the country, no need for military action.

Exactly.

OP bleating on about school friends. Really? Political life is extremely tough and to get anywhere near the top you have to have rhino hide skin. That comment wouldn't even make it into the top 1,000 jibes that have been fired across the benches in the last 10 years.

And don't look back through Hansard OP, some previous comments from prePC days will make you faint, you delicate little flower you.

Is this the new line of attack seeing as the 'police investigation' was outed yesterday for the full on tory smear campaign it is?

(For anyone who missed it, the police chief behind the investigation was found to have attended right wing fringe events at the tory party conference and is mates with the tory who's been pushing for the witchhunt).

IClaudine · 25/04/2024 10:36

Dudn't Dorries originally refer to Sunak as pint sized?

Catlord · 25/04/2024 10:37

I'm not a fan of ad hom attacks when it's things people can't help (background, physicality) as opposed to affectations or oversights (Johnson's hair, Sunak being out of touch, very fine line indeed but some of Rayner's northern schtick).

I can see why Starmer gives so little away.

However, I fail to see the ablism angle. How is Sunak disabled in any way by his height?

I agree it was a comment on the insubstantial nature of his leadership as much as or more than his physical stature which is a fair comment IMO even if expressed in a parliamentary rough and tumble manner.

I love Rayner … I love the way she triggers the right-wing snowflakes. With any luck they will all be so angry they may combust

Wonders? Can snowflakes combust? Or do they just dissolve into a drippy pool?

Either way, can’t wait to see it happening to many at the GE. So many potentially gratifying Portillo moments. Will be following North East Somerset with hopeful anticipation.

Mrsjayy · 25/04/2024 10:38

Mps being immature and insulting in Westminster who would have thought ! The fact that insulting each other is sport and gets the whooping and jeering going for the session!

Did you know Rayner has a four bedroomed house?

OneTC · 25/04/2024 10:38

Funnily enough I was at a meeting the other day and the bloke leading it started making jokes about how small sunak was and har har can you imagine, and then he realised/remembered I am really really small and just segued into a different story

tbh if you're small and sensitive about it you're going to be in for a very rough ride

I think most of the discourse in the house of commons is pretty embarrassing though, if they weren't banging out the childish comments they wouldn't have much of anything to do

Looking forward to Gullis getting the boot, too.

I was surprised at her choice of words. These things are usually prepared in advance, so I don't think it was spontaneous.

If a man had attacked a female MP over a physical characteristic, I think the reaction would have been very different. But he's a Tory, so that's OK.

Quelle surprise.

I save my use of the word 'abhorrent' for things that are genuinely abhorrent.

IClaudine · 25/04/2024 10:41

Weasel face Sunak is good at dishing it out himself, makes a change for him to be the recipient.

I hadn’t seen this, but what a disgraceful thing to say to him.

I didn’t vote at the last election as I thought both options were awful. Lots of people who did vote ended up voting for the least bad option. I don’t think I will vote this time either. I don’t think the current conservative govt has done a good job. But I don’t Angela Rayner is is a good option either. I wish they would put a “none of the above” box.

I wish they would put a “none of the above” box.

They do. Spoil your paper. Spoilt papers are counted and this is the only current means we have to register that we weren't apathetic and didn't vote, but that we turned up but don't wish to vote for any candidate.

TTPD · 25/04/2024 10:45

Until yesterday, I'd never heard this woman speak.

You've never heard Angela Rayner speak before this week? I find that surprising for someone who calls themselves a distinguished social commentator. Do you not watch much news?

PMQs is pretty much always a pointless show of grandstanding and point scoring from both sides. It's a waste of time the way it's currently done.

But pint-sized is not "abhorrent". Childish and stupid, yes (but I'd say that's par for the course at PMQs). Abhorrent, no.

This
i found it a bit disappointing that she/labour couldn’t take the higher road on this and not resort to body size jokes.

And also this
op has an obvious bias and the hyperbole is daft, but I also agree with a pp saying there are a lot who “can’t get bothered by it” because it’s the red team dishing it out not the blue one

Moier · 25/04/2024 09:38

Well she's not very intelligent in my opinion.
She's all ignorant and lacking interlect.

The irony of intellect 🥴

I bet she can spell intellect though. She’s a very bright cookie and Tories hate her because she embodies everything they pretend to stand for but fail to demonstrate. She started life in horrendous circumstances, made her own life better all by her own efforts and is now on the doorstep of running the country.

Mercurial123 · 25/04/2024 10:53

Overtheatlantic · 25/04/2024 09:31

She doesn’t have the intellect to argue successfully without resorting to playground name calling.

Isn't that the point of PMQ?

Boris Johnson attacked Rayner over crossing her legs. Not a single howl of outrage from the right wing press. So you're wrong.

Blackcats7 · 25/04/2024 10:55

How very dare she be shortist?! When she has been treated with nothing but courtesy by the tories at all times. Must be her working class upbringing showing.
Although maybe she meant the capri trousered worm’s intellect is pint sized?

What about the insults and downright lies Sunak and Johnson have spewed about Starmer during PMQs? Did you start a thread about how abhorrent those were, OP?
