For voting Tory

I know what the Tories are and no, I don't like it. But I'm a woman, I have daughters and I come from generations of women who've been abused and dismissed because of their sex. I want better for my girls but I can't do it on my own. I need a government who will (at least give lip service to) supporting me. Am I a Tory? no. But the last thing women need is to be fighting their own government for basic recognition, so Tory it is.

The whole point of democracy is that you get to vote whichever way you want for whatever reason you want. You do not have to justify your choice or feel guilty about it. You do not have to share it, but you can if you want to. You do not have to agree with other people’s voting choices and they don’t have to agree with yours.

The corollary of which is you accept the consequences of that vote

YABU.

BIossomtoes · 16/04/2024 20:55

It puzzles me that there are as many trans men as trans women but nobody’s noticed apparently. And nobody gives a shit about them. Strange.

They don't get mentioned as much because you can't try and paint them as a threat, they get mentioned to be painted as victims and lost confused poor little women though.

Males as a sex class statistically pose more of a risk to women than females. Transmen are female. They don't pose the same problems in say sport to males that biological males do to women. Transmen don't appear to be enforcing their way into men's spaces. Wonder why that is.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 16/04/2024 20:59

It amazes me that this has to be pointed out.

BIossomtoes · 16/04/2024 21:00

Don’t they? I’d wager they do and men don’t care.

Yes, because they don't pose the same risk to them.

Yes so strange...
Or it could just be because trans men don't belong to the sex that commit 98% of violent sex crime or dominate nearly every sport.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 16/04/2024 21:02

I'd like to see the stats on transmen wanting to take part in men's sports.

Or transmen requesting transfer to men's prison.

mrlistersgelfbride · 16/04/2024 12:58

Totally this.
The Tories have no more straws to clutch at so are going for this angle which is all they have left.
Sadly it seems to be working.
Some people have short memories.

I hope during the General Election, which I cannot participate in even after living here for 25 years,
people's memory gets refreshed.
🤬

Underthinker · 16/04/2024 21:03

Or transmen requesting transfer to men's prison.

They wouldn’t have to request it. They’d automatically go there if convicted if they have a GRC. Same as a trans woman with a GRC would automatically go to a women’s prison.

FlissyPaps · 16/04/2024 21:09

I can’t respect anyone who votes Tory. They’re scum of the earth, don’t care about working class people and the certainly don’t care about women.

Crikeyalmighty · 16/04/2024 21:10

You do realise the Tory's I think are going to be pushing this issue as they have nothing positive they can campaign on and are relying on women to have it as a biggie on their agenda. Quite cynical I think especially as their record in this area hasn't exactly been positive and proactive and they have had 'a lot' of time. . Personally I think the whole subject has had far too much time and column inches against far bigger issues affecting women as a result of their policies, affordable housing, mental health, policing, health and maternity, , lack of access to legal support, education, in fact the only positive I can say during their time is the no fault quick divorce ruling.

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/04/2024 21:22

I'd like to see the stats on transfolk competing in sports for 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2024 so I can compare them and see how much the Tories have done about it.

pointythings · 16/04/2024 21:27

I can't recall any of the Sunak thread ever being deleted, so @Lion400 you're absolutely free to post on the Michaela prayer issue there. The threads are always on the first page in Chat because they are so active.

LittleBowSheep · 16/04/2024 21:36

Seriously?

You think because the Tories have said they know 'what a woman is' that they are going to help women more than any other party?

You must realise that they will just say anything at all if they think it will get them votes?

Ask yourself exactly what they have done to help women over the last 14 years? There is your answer.

Underthinker · 16/04/2024 22:12

The majority of TM don't have a GRC. But the activists who insist that it's cruel to send transwomen to men's prisons because it would exacerbate their gender dysphoria, surprisingly don't seem to make the same case for TM.

Then all the other parties need to do is stop proposing policies that will make the situation worse and then the Tories will no longer have that option.

What are other parties proposing that will make affordable housing, mental health, policing, health and maternity, lack of access to legal support, education worse? It’s debatable that some of those areas could be made worse.

I was referring to policies on gender obviously.

If opposition parties and/or their supporters think the focus on gender policies is too great, and that Tories are cynically capitalising on the issue to gain votes, there is a surefire way to nullify such tactics - don't propose pro-gender policies such as making the GRC process easier.

lifeturnsonadime · 16/04/2024 22:47

These threads just sadden me.

How have we got to the point that women's rights are couched as 'culture wars'?

How have we got to the point that we can't trust any mainstream political party to keep rapists out of women's prisons or to keep males out of women's sport, or even to keep children safe from an ideology that tells them their bodies are wrong because they don't conform to gender ideals aligned to their sex?

I can understand why posters don't think that this should be a single issue vote and I can understand why voters are saying 'anyone but the Tories' but women and children deserve better than our rights being set aside because 'not the Tories'.

There are posters on here who are trying to suggest that women who raise concerns about Labour policies must be 'Tory Bots' or the like.

Have we really got to the point that we can't critically assess a party and say that these things are not good for women and children (on this issue) without being accused of being right wing or Tories or whatever?

Women and children deserve better. If you are going to vote Labour and say this is 'just a culture war' then that is your choice entirely but, by god, why not put them to task on this if you think that women and children deserve better than this? Don't let them get away with it because 'not Tory'. Women are too important. Children are too important.

Crikeyalmighty · 16/04/2024 23:09

@lifeturnsonadime I think my own view is change the party and then 'pressure ' on this issue. I think 'all' the things are important but won't vote Tory just on that on a single issue when they are so shit on many of the other issues and haven't been great on this one either.
