YABU Every 2 weeks

YANBU Once a week.

If you wash your bedding more or less please let me know why.

When I was at uni I gifted my (then) boyfriend a duvet, as his was rubbish. Sent it with white bedding for the whole bed. About 10 months later I pulled back the duvet to see a brown smear all down the centre of the bed. I asked when the last time he had washed the bedding was... he said never 🤢🤢

Blarn · 15/04/2024 10:41

Once a week and sometimes I change the bottom sheet during the week too if it is warm. Only because I am a very sweaty sleeper! I've tried going two weeks but I could smell the sweat Blush

In summer when it is very hot and dh is on nights I might change it twice a week because between the two of us it is being slept in constantly.

bowlingalleyblues · 15/04/2024 10:45

Every couple of months.

I wear pyjamas and change them regularly, the sheets don't smell. Or at least they don't to me and I'm the only one smelling them.

K0OLA1D · 15/04/2024 10:46

About every 10 or so days for ours. Kids around 3 weeks ish. Sometimes more in summer, or nice weather.

Have started washing DS1s more around 2 week mark as he's almost a teen.

And yet you commented on it.

I started this thread to ask a question because a group of women on her belittled and judged me, hence the question hope that helps.

Why wouldn't I be allowed to comment?

And they say feminism is dead. What a depressing thread,....

What's the connection between clean sheets and feminism? Aren't feminists allowed to want clean linen?

thepastinsidethepresent · 15/04/2024 12:36

OP, personally I think the towel-washing is excessive too, but that aside (and I don't mean this to sound snidey) you're defending your choices so robustly that it appears they're working for you... so maybe just own your choices and don't bother what anyone else thinks? I mean, if you ask for opinions you're going to get them... just saying.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 15/04/2024 10:24

Trust me, after 3 months, it smells, regardless of who you are

Yeah this ... I don't really like the 'competitive cleanliness,' that you get on these types of threads, and I think washing the bedding every 4 - 7 days (as a few people have said,) is a bit much. I can't imagine anybody needing to do it that often, unless it's very, very hot and they're sweating a lot. And washing towels once a day? WTF? Who does that? Confused No-one I know!

But the other end of the scale is batshit. Only washing your bedding every 3 months? Really?! That is actually gross. There's no way in hell that the bedding won't stink after that amount of time ... No matter what time of year it is, and no matter who you are/what age/what weight etc...

I know this word's overused on Mumsnet, but it is actually grim to only wash your bedding* *four times a year. God, it must stink by then. 😬

BlackStrayCat · 15/04/2024 12:47

Towels and pillow cases once a week.
Sheets once a month in winter. Once a week in summer.
I sleep on my own and do not get into bed dirty.

Do whats best for you.

Towels once a day is nuts. Utter waste of time.

How would you possibly know this
Do you visit people and sneak into their bedroom to sniff the bedsheets
How many have you done this to in the aid of research
Do you have spreadsheet of friends beds whiffiness to when they last changed the bed sheets

theteddybear · 15/04/2024 15:28

In winter more like every 3weeks (I aim for 2 weeks doesn't happen often) it's such a hassle trying to dry sheets/duvets. I end up with them draped over chairs in dining room or play room. In summer more every 1-2 weeks as it's easy to dry them outside.

nothingsforgotten · 15/04/2024 22:23

hottchocolatte · 15/04/2024 09:30

I am curious about using a top sheet. It would be easier to wash!

what are the downsides?

None that I'm aware of. I don't live in the UK and people usually use two sheets here, in fact most sheets are sold in packs of two, one fitted and one flat. Having to constantly take a duvet cover off, wash it, then put it back on sounds like utter madness to me.

sobercuriouskind · 15/04/2024 22:44

A couple of times a week. My medication and being perimenopausal means I sweat a lot. I have to shower morning and night and wear clean pjs each night too for the same reason.

Starsandflowers · 15/04/2024 22:51

People are probably going to say I'm disgusting but I only wash the bedding when I remember which is probably around once a month tbh. Got 5 people in this house I'm doing washing for.. no way I'm washing bedding every single week.
Same with towels. I wash after they seem like they need washing not after every use.

ChicagoBears · 15/04/2024 22:52

Cleaner changes all of the beds once a week.

Onelifeonly · 15/04/2024 23:00

Why do you need to keep asking us OP? There isn't a right or wrong, just personal views. There will be a tendency to err on the cleaner side when assessing one's habits even if it's not true because no one wants to say they are dirty.

Honest answer - when it occurs to me or I notice they need a change. My life is full of other concerns, activities and interests, so counting the days between changing bedding is low (not on) my list. I would always put on clean bedding for guests, if that helps.

Edited

No it doesn't stink actually. We are obviously not as stinky and sweaty as you! Anyway what do you think is happening to it after a couple of months that doesn't happen in a couple of weeks?

Things that actually stink start doing so quite quickly. For example sports kit. I wouldn't wear that more than once.

PrincessTeaSet · 15/04/2024 23:16

Bigearringsbigsmile · 14/04/2024 23:07

🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢
Doesn't it SMELL?

No. We don't seem to be smelly people. Probably as we're not overweight, do plenty of exercise, eat healthily, don't smoke or drink excessively, don't have pets or eat or drink in bed. Also we wear underwear in bed.

What about sex? Do you not have sex in your bed either?

So people who wash their sheets infrequently not have sex in their bed?

My in-laws used to be quite confident they didn't smell. They did. They just lost their sense of smell as they got older. I had to air the guest room out every time they stayed with us.

Catastropher · 16/04/2024 09:24

Thankfully it doesn’t happen very often. When it does, yes I change the sheets. But I can easily avoid it for six months.

But when it comes down to it, its smell and dirt vs the hassle and difficulty of changing and washing the bedding. I’m usually happier to tolerate the smell and dirt; changing the bedding is so hard.

user1471523870 · 16/04/2024 09:41

Generally speaking every two weeks, but in reality more often if there is an accident in DS' bed, or if we have guests around/sleepovers or in summer when it's hot.
I always wash the pillow cases at least once a week.

I started using a top sheet too and it makes my life so much easier! I no longer strip the duvet cover every single time, I just wash the top sheet, which is not a pain to remove and put back.

I get all tangled up in sheets. If I ever stay at a hotel, my bed looks like someone has tried to wrestle in it 🤣

Some of us are single. I consider it good practice to change the sheets between different men. I just change them more often than that would necessitate.

KreedKafer · 16/04/2024 11:01

DP does all the laundry. He doesn't have a particular bedding washing schedule, he just does it when they feel like they need refreshing, if that makes sense. So in hot weather when we sweat more, the bedding gets changed more often than it does in winter. And the other week he changed them after we'd both been ill with a cold and somehow it all just felt a bit germy and gross. Sometimes they're probably only on for a week and other times they might stay on for three or four, but it's not something I really keep tabs on.
