My husband and I are having a debate and I would like to know who is wrong. I am posting in AIBU for traffic.

We are a family of 5.

3 working full time. 1 working part time and one at Sixth form.

How many of the following do a family like ours use.

Toilet rolls
Kitchen rolls
bottles of shower gel
Bottles of shampoo and conditioner
Fabric conditioner
Washing pods
Deodorant
Tooth paste
Gas and electric per month.

And any other items that you buy weekly/monthly.

Settle a debate and help me prove my Husband wrong.

Well I have me and 5 dc here, ones an adult who works, two teens and two under 10, so probably a bit less than you.

I go through a pack of 9 toilet rolls, 1 kitchen roll, shower gel, shampoo and conditioner I buy in 5 litre tubs, but it would probably be 2 normal sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner per week and maybe 2 bottles of shower gel, I do 2 or 3 loads of washing per day so 20+ pods per week and a bottle of fabric conditioner, toothpaste 1 per week, deodorant 1 each per about 2 weeks, gas and electric - I'm about 80-100 per month for electric, winter is about the same for gas, but I'm about a tenner a week from now until October.

I'm in the house all the time and 1 of my dc is home schooled though, 1 at college and working full time, 1 at college and working part time, 2 at school all day.

SillySeal · 12/04/2024 09:39

Toilet roll 6 per week
Kitchen roll 1 per week if its the good stuff or 2/3 if it's cheaper stuff.
Shower gel 2 bottles
Shampoo 2 bottles
Conditioner 1.5 bottles
Fabric conditioner 1
Washing pods 14 minimum
Deodorant 1 per person every 2 weeks
Toothpaste 1 a week
Electricity around 80 a month
Gas around 75 a month on average

Thank you.

I am in awe of how low your Gas/Elec is.

Gas is literally just hot water and heating. A bath costs 50p, a shower 15p, washing up is a few pence so it's fine.

Air fryer saved a lot on electric, and I don't have anything big that runs it down really.

I'm on a meter so I monitor it pretty closely.

When I had storage heating a few years back my electric was ridiculous, 60 per week, and about 100 in the winter, and it only went on a set times of the day, and 1 heating of the hot water tank as well. Was so glad to have the gas put in.

Snoopsteandcooper · 12/04/2024 09:55

4 adults and 1 mid teen here. (4 male 1 female )
Toilet rolls: 12 per month
Kitchen roll: 2 per month
Shower gel: 4 per month
Shampoo 1 bottle guys 1/2 bottle me
Conditioner 1/2 bottle (I'm the only one that uses)
Fabric conditioner 1 x Dettol laundry sanitiser 1.5 litres
Washing powder 1 and a half (40 washes box)
Deodorant: 1 each per month
Toothpaste 4 per month
Electricity £90 per month
Gas £95 per month
4 bed house

Our electric is £170 per month that does not change throughout the year.

Our gas in the winter is £400 per month.

We are lucky that we can afford it but we were going through the household costs last night and it was eye opening, at what we spent.

12 per month, we go through 12 a week! My husband thinks this is excessive.
We go through 2 bottles of fabric conditioner a week, and a box of scent boasters.
Washing powder is at least 2 84 washes a month.
Deodorant is 2 cans each per month.
Everyone is proving my husband right.......

Toilet rolls just disappears!!!
especially with many girls and kids!!!

Dotjones · 12/04/2024 10:07

Toilet rolls - one per person per day but it depends what you buy. Those double rolls easily last two or three days per person, we've had pound shop ones where one roll lasts one "job" so to speak.
Kitchen rolls - one per person per week but again, quality matters
bottles of shower gel - probably a bottle for a family of five should last a week.
Bottles of shampoo and conditioner - if everyone uses it, again a bottle a week.
Fabric conditioner - we don't bother with it.
Washing pods - we use concentrated liquid, two washes per person per week so if it's a pod a time that'd be 10.
Deodorant - a can a week.
Tooth paste - a tube every couple of weeks.
Gas and electric per month - we're tight on heating so it's mainly cooking for gas, about £50 a month. Probably closer to £150 a month for electricity though.

Snoopsteandcooper · 12/04/2024 10:07

Of the 5 of us, I'm the only one at home during the day, so that may account for toilet roll. But, you seem to be getting through a lot!

We have 2 girls in the house and they seem to go through huge amounts.

Do not get my started on boxes of tissues they take 5 just to blow their noses.

We are three working adults and one mid teen.
we all have/buy our own individual toiletries ..even tooth paste … so no arguing about who costs/uses more etc

Toilet roll - at least one a day .
kitchen roll about one a week

MolkosTeenageAngst · 12/04/2024 10:16

I’m one adult.

I use:
Toilet rolls - Not even 1 a week
Kitchen rolls - don’t use
bottles of shower gel - 1 will last at least 2 weeks
Bottles of shampoo and conditioner - as above, 1 will last at least 2 weeks but often longer
Fabric conditioner - bottle lasts at least a month, probably longer
Washing pods - 1-2 a week
Deodorant - roll-on lasts several weeks
Tooth paste - tube lasts a few weeks
Gas and electric per month. - Electric £77 a month. I don’t have gas.

ASeagulStoleMyIceCream · 12/04/2024 10:17

We are a family of 4.

Toilet rolls - 9 -12 rolls (I don’t know where they all go and think 6 should be enough, but it’s not!)

Kitchen rolls - 4 rolls

bottles of shower gel - 1

Bottles of shampoo and conditioner - 1

Fabric conditioner -1

Washing pods - 14 -16 pods (usually buy one box a fortnight)

Deodorant - 1 each, but they usually last much longer than a week.

Tooth paste - everyone’s teeth are brushed twice a day, but it always last much longer than a week.

Gas and electric per month. £200 - £250

Why are you doing such an extraordinary amount of laundry? Are there disabilities or incontinence involved?

We’re a family of four, I think I probably do about six big loads a week and a big box of powder and bottle of concentrated conditioner last me literally months. How the hell are you using a bottle of fabric conditioner every 3-4 days and 160+ loads worth of powder a month?!

2 x 84 wash boxes of washing powder would be over 5 washes a day every day in a month.

Are you doing that much washing?? Are you unloading the machine or overdoing it with the washing powder?

Holy shit op.

I thought I did a lot of washing, and I wash dds bedding daily due to her disability.

No disabilities but I do at least 25 loads of washing a week, and probably over use the washing powder and I like the clothes to smell nice.

Everyone in the house wears clean clothes everyday, bedding is washed weekly or twice a week in the summer, we have 3 super king bed, and 2 king size.
Towels are washed after every use, and we all shower/bath daily or twice a day.

I use a box of colour washing powder and a box of bio for whites each month.

OP posts:
Revelatio · 12/04/2024 10:35

Why do you wash your towels after every use?! You’ve just come out of the shower, your body is clean!! Clean underwear everyday yes, but you can wear a jumper again etc.

Apologies if you have medical issues, but if not, do you not worry about your environmental impact?

YellowDaffodilRedTulip · 12/04/2024 10:36

You don’t need to be washing towels after every use, especially if you are showering twice a day. That’s honestly quite ridiculous.

TheNurdnugget · 12/04/2024 10:40

We are a family of 4, two adults working from home, one at school and one at pre school

Toilet rolls- a pack of 9 about every three months (use cloth)
Kitchen rolls- a pack of two every couple of months (use reusable wipes)
bottles of shower gel- 1 or 2 a week
Bottles of shampoo and conditioner- one every three months for me and kids
Fabric conditioner- one every three weeks or so
Washing pods- one every fortnight/three weeks
Deodorant- one can a fortnight
Tooth paste- once a month for kids/fortnight for me & DH
Gas and electric per month.- no idea on DD but I'd imagine relatively high due to WFH
