My husband and I are having a debate and I would like to know who is wrong. I am posting in AIBU for traffic.

We are a family of 5.

3 working full time. 1 working part time and one at Sixth form.

How many of the following do a family like ours use.

Toilet rolls
Kitchen rolls
bottles of shower gel
Bottles of shampoo and conditioner
Fabric conditioner
Washing pods
Deodorant
Tooth paste
Gas and electric per month.

And any other items that you buy weekly/monthly.

Settle a debate and help me prove my Husband wrong.

Family of 4 similar ages, we do 1 wash per day!! 25 washes a week, I suspect you all have too many clothes. Also, every item doesn't need washing immediately after 1 wear! Bedding twice a week wow! Do you have time for anything else in life other than the laundry??

I have said that we only wash bedding twice a week at the height of SUMMER.

I have also said that I can see that I am wrong to do so much washing.

Please tell me what does not need to be washed after wearing something for 10 hours a day.

I work full time and have lots of hobbies, the washing machine washing the clothes, I am not scrubbing them by hand.

I'm not sure why you started this thread, you seem very defensive, I also find it unbelievable that just by cutting down towel washing you will reduce to 2 loads per person per week.

You've also not considered what I said about over using products, if you have a 3 minute shower with a 10p sized blob of shower gel (as I did this morning, availed myself of gym showers last night) you wouldn't be getting through it at the rate you are.

If you overuse laundry products because you like the smell, are you also over using shampoo, handsoap, shower gel, air freshener etc, reduction of all of these things will reduce your spend. Equally 12 toilet rolls a week is crazy, we get through a couple so even doubling that it would only be 4 , 5 to be generous. Again are you excessive in using toilet paper because it links to your beliefs around cleanliness? These attitudes will have also been passed on to your children making them high consumers too.

Of course it will not reduce to 2 loads of washing per person a week, but it will reduce my washing lots. it may reduce it by 2-3 loads a day.

The waste on this thread is disgusting and sickening.

Five tissues for one nose blow, one toilet roll per person per day, towels washed each use when showering twice a day, clothes washed after each wear. No wonder the environment is a mess.

It is perfectly possible to be clean and hygienic whilst also being mindful of the impact on the environment.

I wouldn’t wash jeans/ trousers or jumpers after wearing them all day unless I had spilled something on them or been doing something very dirty. I wash underwear, socks and T-shirts after one wear but a jumper is fine to be re-worn a few times!

You say well if you’re doing the underwear etc anyway why not just throw in the jeans and jumpers etc? Well because then instead of doing 2 loads you can just do 1! So if you only have a half load of underwear/ T-shirts etc instead of throwing in things that could be re-worn don’t put the load on yet and wait until you have more things that actually need washing to add. You could easily reduce your loads of washing by at least a third if you re-wore things for a second day.

Onelifeonly · 12/04/2024 14:26

Clothes that don't need washing daily - trousers, jumpers, hoodies, cardigans, skirts, bras. For a day at home, I'd re-wear a top unless I'd sweated into it or dropped something on it. My dcs own massive over-sized hoodies. The washing machine would be constantly on the go if they were washed everytime they were worn (barely any contact with naked skin!)

I don't use fabric conditioner and hate chemically made scented items. My dc spray themselves with all sorts but it's way over the top and at their own expense. A large bottle of shower gel lasts several weeks - it's not something I buy every week. You only need a tiny amount if you use a sponge or scrunchy. None of us wash our hair daily - every few days works fine.

Our fuel bill is through the roof but that's partly as we have a poorly insulated 3 storey end of terrace Edwardian house and also because my DH works from home and our DC are on appliances a lot - one makes money in this way.

You are really standoffish and dismissive in your replies, not really sure why you posted as you don't seem to be able to take what people are saying.

I wouldnt wash jeans after 1 wear, or cardigans, jumpers, tracksuits, skirts, some trousers. Underwear, tshirts, dresses yeah, but the rest is wasteful. They are not exactly dirty after 1 wash you don't have toddlers.

I am being as standoffish and dismissive as they are of me, I have been called names, told I have OCD, ruining the planet, my house must stink because I have a different opinion, it works both ways.

People have also assumed and made judgements on what they think when I have not even said how much shower gel we use.

I have also stated that I will reduce my washing, but hey some just have to keep on and on, with I only do 2 loads a week, which I think is not enough, but each to our own.

12 per month, we go through 12 a week! My husband thinks this is excessive.
We go through 2 bottles of fabric conditioner a week, and a box of scent boasters.
Washing powder is at least 2 84 washes a month.
Deodorant is 2 cans each per month.
Everyone is proving my husband right.......

We go through around 12-14 toilet rolls per week. OP do you have boys or girls? I think that's what makes the difference.

Family of 4 here, 1 works from home, 1 works nights, 1 in college other in sixth form. (1 male, 3 females).

Don't use kitchen roll.
Around 4 bottles of shower gel every 2-3 weeks. (We have our own individual bottles).
Shampoo & Conditioner - 1 of each every 1-2 weeks.
Fabric conditioner - 1 every 2 weeks.
Washing powder (I prefer powder over pods, it lasts longer). - 1 medium box every 2-3 weeks.
Deodorant - 1 per person every 2 weeks.
Toothpaste - we each have our own tubes ( different preferences) so they usually last us around 2 months.
Gas and electric - around £95 per month for both.

Thank you for your nice post.

We have 2 girls and a boy, the girls have long hair, and my son plays Rugby so trains twice a week and then plays a game on a Saturday, he plays cricket in the summer so this adds to the washing.

So your use of products is the same amount as mine really, expect the Gas and Elec. I have only told people what we use in toilet rolls and tissues yet everyone is jumping on me.

I have said that I will reduce my washing starting from today.

Really, ok.

I can't be bothered to quote you.

Where have I been rude to anyone?

I have said that I will stop doing so much washing and not wash towels after every use, it is just normal in my wider family to do so.

I take pride in my house being presentable, our clothes clean and smelling nice, ironed, this does not make me a monster, just as it does not make someone who does not wash everyday or have clean clothes on everyday a monster.

No I'm sorry - they're @JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon is right!

The waste IS sickening. Imagine, if you will, someone standing by a stream and just repeatedly chucking plastic bottles in it.

Or looking at a water source and chucking used toilet tissue in it.

Or looking at a water source and throwing chemicals in it over and over again, multiple times, every day.

That is what you are doing. Not metaphorically. Literally.

What waste, we do not waste anything in the house, everything is recycled.

I love the fact that you have all jumped on me for my use of chemicals, have you heard of eco laundry fabric conditioner!

As I have said many times, I am reducing my washing habits, but most posters on here use the same shower gels, toilet rolls.

What do you use for your washing?

What car do you use, and please do not tell me to use a bike, my commute on the motorway would not be fun.

Ok 2 adults 3 late teens with long hair

Toilet rolls 6 big ones but a lot more if they are the home bargains type
shampoo 1.5 bottles per week
conditioner maybe slightly less
10 washes per week
Not more than one toothpaste 125ml
Dishwasher 1-2 per day
No fabric conditioner due to eczema
Electric - loads Summer and Winter say 150 per month
Gas about 50 in Summer and a good 150/200 per month in winter.
No idea why so much electric..

We are not using the big toilet rolls yet as they do not fit onto our toilet roll holders so they will have to be changed and Waitrose still have the normal sized tubes.
Other than the washing, which I will change as I can see that I am doing too much, not that much different.

I’m amazed at some of this! We’re currently 4 adults, shower gel lasts ages, we don’t use fabric conditioner, and I get a box of 30 Smol laundry capsules a month, and occasionally have to top that up. 2
dont use deodorant at all, I use a stick one that lasts for probably 2-3 months. Toothpaste lasts at least a month ( one in each of 2 bathrooms.
Toilet paper- we use a box of 48 about every 3 months.

SpringOfContentment · 12/04/2024 17:15

I think you've heard the comments on washing towels, jumpers and trousers a little less often (FWIW, I agree with your bedding frequency - I love clean sheets, and will change them twice a week in summer when I can line dry).

We have 1 less adult than you:
Toilet rolls 4 a week (but the big, double rolls)
Kitchen rolls 1 a month
bottles of shower gel 2 a month (plus bar soap that lasts forever)
Bottles of shampoo and conditioner. Maybe one or 2 a month on average. I'm the only one who uses conditioner - one every 3 months.
Fabric conditioner None
Washing pods 28 a month
Deodorant A bottle lasts me about a month. The rest use sporadically (DH not at all - he truly doesn't need it)
Tooth paste I'm always bloody buying toothpaste. Maybe 2 tubes a week?
Gas and electric per month. Was 215. Just switched to Octopus tracker, and down to about 180.

workworkwork123 · 12/04/2024 18:10

TheSpoonyNavyReader I'm sure there's many posters who use just as much or more but don't want to get jumped on for admitting so, but it is what it is. I recycle, by eco friendly where possible but if my DC need to wipe their backsides they need to use loo roll, I'm not going to ration out 1 square per wipe.

They would really leap on if they saw my weekly food shopping bill and list Blush

There's 4 of us here full time then DSC. My toddler is potty training so many accidents, wet bedding and the dog makes her fair share of mess too

I have always used to different washing powders, one for colours and one for whites, they sell them for colours and whites.

Every hotel I have stayed in you get fresh towels everyday.

I may have OCD, one daughter has been diagnosed but her OCD is making sure everything lines up, doing things in twos, maybe I do but I hate the thought of any of my family not being seen as clean. I get joy out of seeing a line full of washing, the bedding all crisp, ironed and fresh.

Edited

Doesn’t every hotel you stay in now have a note saying if you put this sign out we will change your towels but won’t you think of the environment? It feels like that’s been every single hotel for at least a decade now (and I have never put the sign out)

I have OCD and when I was a kid I was like your daughter-counting, checking etc. but now it's all about washing hands and contamination (I do still like to keep things lined up but don't check things anymore) I also do a lot of laundry but I'm trying to cut down and I've never washed towels after each use (but would if I happened to drop it on the floor or stuff like that). I also waste products and use way too much soap and shampoo and spend too long in the shower excessively washing.

I don't feel like something bad will happen if I don't do these things or I'll get sick but I do things until they feel "right" to me. I think you sound similar maybe? So it could very well be you have OCD.
