My husband and I are having a debate and I would like to know who is wrong. I am posting in AIBU for traffic.

We are a family of 5.

3 working full time. 1 working part time and one at Sixth form.

How many of the following do a family like ours use.

Toilet rolls
Kitchen rolls
bottles of shower gel
Bottles of shampoo and conditioner
Fabric conditioner
Washing pods
Deodorant
Tooth paste
Gas and electric per month.

And any other items that you buy weekly/monthly.

Settle a debate and help me prove my Husband wrong.

Maybe I am just messy but working all day, my clothes usually have a stain on them, or the smells of cooking (cant stand the smell of grease etc).

I am clean when I get out of the shower but its touched your bits and I would hate it to be reused, do you not change your guest towels after someone has visited?

I am only washing the towels like my Mum did back in the 80's.

All windows are opened daily to let fresh air into the house.

I do not smell chemically at all, I cant be the only person that uses scent boaster as there is a full aisle in my Supermarket.

Of course we wash guest towels when they leave but not our own after each shower. But we don’t share them.

I don’t use fabric conditioner or scent pods.

GuttingHouse2024 · 12/04/2024 12:03

Sorry I just read you do hang on dry days which is obviously good. I also do not mind spider penises in my washing overnight.

Do your children do any of the washing? It must be very time consuming and I wonder if they had to do their own if they’d rethink just chucking clean towels in the wash.

They do their own washing at the weekends, they do not have a problem with washing their towels it is not like they are scrubbing the towels by hand.

So everyone is saying that I wash the clothes too much, but everyone says that they would not was a jumper after every wash, but if you are going to wash your underwear, bra, socks, t-shirt why not just pop in your trousers and jumper, most jumpers are cotton so can be thrown into the washing machine.

My wool jumpers like my cashmere are hand washed, these would be used twice.

Because it doesn’t need it and you can do fewer washes during the week. Save up your washing to be done in fewer loads. You are making an awful lot of unnecesssry work for yourself, especially with the towels.

I’d imagine most people don’t take off their bra, pants, socks and T-shirts and throw them in a wash on their own though. They wait until there is a full load of them which would then include the jeans you’ve worn for 3 days or the cotton too you e had on twice. Doesn’t that make more sense. Would you actually just wash a set of pants socks and a top on its own?

Capmagturk · 12/04/2024 12:19

Toilet rolls - 12
Kitchen rolls - 1 big one maybe 1.5
bottles of shower gel - 2
Bottles of shampoo and conditioner - I buy a big tigi shampoo/conditioner and it lasts 6 weeks
Fabric conditioner - buy a new one every 3-4 weeks
Washing pods - buy a big bag, lasts a few weeks
Deodorant - have our own, lasts couple weeks each
Tooth paste - tube a week
Gas and electric per month. - I wfh 3 days a week, don't have tumble drier/dishwasher. 80 - 120 a month electricity on average same for gas

TheSpoonyNavyReader · 12/04/2024 10:02

12 per month, we go through 12 a week! My husband thinks this is excessive.
We go through 2 bottles of fabric conditioner a week, and a box of scent boasters.
Washing powder is at least 2 84 washes a month.
Deodorant is 2 cans each per month.
Everyone is proving my husband right.......

Are you saying you do 40 washes a week? 5 a day? Not bloody likely; so you use too much of it. I’d also talk to the kids about the toilet paper, they might be being pretty wasteful.

TheSpoonyNavyReader · 12/04/2024 12:21

NutSquadSquirrels · 12/04/2024 12:11

You seem a little fixated on cleanliness but it’s gone a little too far. Please change before your children are impacted further. They have warped ideas of what is “clean”. You don’t need a whole new set of clothes and towels daily. The amount of products (clothes washing, scent boosters, deodorants, shampoo, liquid soap, toilet rolls etc etc) is at LEAST twice what my similarly sized family uses (in soem cases 5/6 times the amount). It all seems so excessive. No wonder your bills are high. Whilst it’s great you can afford all that it’s not so great for our environment. Imagine if every family lived like yours.

Most families I know, shower everyday and wear clean clothes every single day.
I am astonished that people do not shower everyday, wear clean clothes everyday, I can also tell if someone has not had a shower or that they are not wearing clean clothes.

as for deodorants we seem to be at the same level as most on here, a tin of deodorants every 2 weeks is normal, also our toilet roll use is about the same.

Anyone that only uses a roll a week is not getting clean down there.

I change my knickers, socks and t shirt every day. They go in a basket until there’s a full load, I’m not doing laundry each day. Adding jeans, fleece, bra etc daily would more than double the amount, thus I’d have to wash more often. Plus I’d have to buy more clothes due to them being out of commission in the wash, and getting more wear and tear in the machine. That’s why I don’t “pop them in”.

Forget the money and the environment - how do you have time or energy to change so many beds, wash, dry, fold and put away so much laundry, shower a couple of times a day, go to the gym daily, cook meals, have guests daily and run, clean and maintain an absolutely massive listed farm house, while also working?

I probably do 30 loads a week, and I have said that I am using too much washing powder, but I live in a very hard water area so have to use more. I will reduce my use of fabric conditioner.

Who said anything about not showering every day? Most adults would shower daily (and teens preteens) we just aren’t all washing our towels every day.

Onelifeonly · 12/04/2024 12:24

You are doing far too much washing! Sorry, I can't be bothered to work out how many of those other things we use (4 adults), but that stands out to me.

Bedding washed every 2 to 3 weeks, or more often if needed. Towels, when I feel like it. I re-wear clothes if they seem clean except for work (in case anyone notices, lol).

One dc overdoes the toilet paper, but neither shower everyday. Nor do I unless I've exercised or it's particularly hot.

Most of your list doesn't bother me. One dc uses around third of a bottle of shampoo and conditioner every shower (has long, very thick hair) but will also supply their own.

I was going to be sarcastic and say your husband was bound to be in the wrong (since this is MN and men always are) but maybe he is not in this case!!

iusedtohavechickens · 12/04/2024 12:27

4 adults, 1 teen and 1 5yo. 2 males 4 females
Toilet rolls: 48 rolls per month
Kitchen roll 1-2 pee week
Shower gel - one per week
Shampoo - 1 bottle per week
Conditioner 1 bottle per week
Fabric conditioner - I buy one large bottle (4ltr) per month and my daughter and her b/f buy their own as have their own washing machine and do their own washing.
Washing powder- 1 big bottle per month, my washing machine auto doses just just regular whenever needed. Again daughter and b/f do their own washing.
Deodorant - 1 each a month except for 5yo!
Toothpaste 2 per month plus eldest and bf buy their own
Gas and electricity is £335 per month not sure what each one is but we use that much per month.
6 bed house

BobbyBiscuits · 12/04/2024 12:28

We are 3, all disabled/ not working/ retired...
So we don't have to bathe and wash hair every single day, in fact hair washing only happens maybe once a week per person. Probably 2 laundry pods a day. We are having a shower fitted so our shower gel and shampoo budget will double. Toothpaste is about 3 a month, loo rolls one per day, kitchen rolls 2 or 3 a week.
We spend a lot on food though. I dread to think to be honest. Gas bill is horrific due to old house with thin windows.

We have a gym at home, we have a cleaner and an ironing lady, shopping is delivered and by guests I mean kids friends, my parents popping over, our friends. We have 3 kids late teens/early twenties there is always someone popping in.

We all shower as soon as we wake up or have a morning work out and if we are going out or got sweaty then we jump in the shower again.

Honestly it is not time consuming, I take a wash out that I have timed to finish just as I get up I put a load of washing on when I am waiting for the kettle to boil, put another in before I leave for work and put that in the tumble drier or line and then another in the evening and a load to be washed overnight ready for the morning. Kids do some at the weekend.

Don't the full timers buy their own deodorant, shampoo and conditioner? Otherwise buy the biggest cheapest you can or own brands don't like it but your own.

No disabilities but I do at least 25 loads of washing a week, and probably over use the washing powder and I like the clothes to smell nice.

Everyone in the house wears clean clothes everyday, bedding is washed weekly or twice a week in the summer, we have 3 super king bed, and 2 king size.
Towels are washed after every use, and we all shower/bath daily or twice a day.

I use a box of colour washing powder and a box of bio for whites each month.

Why a fresh towel every use? You don't get that in a hotel. You don't need 2 types of washing powder ....do you have OCD?

I have always used to different washing powders, one for colours and one for whites, they sell them for colours and whites.

Every hotel I have stayed in you get fresh towels everyday.

I may have OCD, one daughter has been diagnosed but her OCD is making sure everything lines up, doing things in twos, maybe I do but I hate the thought of any of my family not being seen as clean. I get joy out of seeing a line full of washing, the bedding all crisp, ironed and fresh.

So your a victim of marketing on the powders.
They changed towels left in the bath hang them up they don't....like the sign says.

That cant be a real answer? You think everyone else having a conscious balances out your lack of fucks on the topic?!
