My husband and I are having a debate and I would like to know who is wrong. I am posting in AIBU for traffic.

We are a family of 5.

3 working full time. 1 working part time and one at Sixth form.

How many of the following do a family like ours use.

Toilet rolls
Kitchen rolls
bottles of shower gel
Bottles of shampoo and conditioner
Fabric conditioner
Washing pods
Deodorant
Tooth paste
Gas and electric per month.

And any other items that you buy weekly/monthly.

Settle a debate and help me prove my Husband wrong.

No disabilities but I do at least 25 loads of washing a week, and probably over use the washing powder and I like the clothes to smell nice.

Everyone in the house wears clean clothes everyday, bedding is washed weekly or twice a week in the summer, we have 3 super king bed, and 2 king size.
Towels are washed after every use, and we all shower/bath daily or twice a day.

I use a box of colour washing powder and a box of bio for whites each month.

Edited

That is so excessive! There’s 4 of us here including a baby and a toddler, all wear clean clothes every day and baby goes through a few outfits a day and we tend to do one wash a day. I thought that’s as a lot but 25 a week is loads. Your electricity bill must be huge.

Everyone is on about the washing and I have seen that I should wash less.

I was asking about shower gels, toilet rolls etc.

Just use LESS of everything!!! You are a nightmare over consumer and are destroying the planet. What if we all consumed like your wealthy large family did. No planet left that’s what.

TheSpoonyNavyReader · 12/04/2024 13:04

jannier · 12/04/2024 12:55

So your a victim of marketing on the powders.
They changed towels left in the bath hang them up they don't....like the sign says.
You have OCD so there is your answer .....your husband is not abnormal your OCD is the issue.

Do you not get joy from seeing your house look nice, your children's clothes ironed and clean.

As I have pointed out I think that I do, do too much washing and I will start washing the towels less, the bedding will be once a week, unless it is the height of summer (which I am doing now). Clothes will be the same, as I cant honestly see why you do not just throw everything in.

I think China has much more to do with it.

My wealthy large family. Wow are you lovely.

This is absolutely insane. No wonder the planet is in the mess it is.

We do two loads of washing a week. One for clothes, one for towels and bedding.

I thought I did a lot of washing!!
towels don’t need to be washed after every use as long as they’re hung up after use. Once a week is fine for bedding.
we don’t use fabric conditioner - not keen on the smell.

we’re also a family of 5, I reckon we get through 8 loo rolls.
3 kitchen rolls
2-3 bottles of shower gel
2 bottles of shampoo/conditioner
(difficult to say as we each have a bathroom).

Gas/electric about £500/month in winter, but much lower in summer.

TheHorneSection · 12/04/2024 13:14

No, it never occurred to me to change the guest bathroom hand towel every day.

Guests get their own bath towel if stays my overnight, which obviously goes in the wash, as do sheets after they’ve stayed. But definitely the downstairs loo hand towel! What on earth do you think they are wiping on them?!

We use the same as you in terms of kitchen rolls, shower gel, shampoo and conditioner but we all use different types of shampoo and conditioner so what we use averages out of the week.

What the hell are you doing with it to use that much? (I know it’s not the OP who claimed that, but still)

There could be 8 different people using it, getting damp so just put out a clean one in the morning, just like tea towels.

Everyone plays their part. A large family with a hilltop house with cleaners, own gym, food deliveries, EV and soy candles plays their part as much as a single bloke in a bed sit. China has its part to play no one would deny that but presumably YOU cannot change China but you sure as shit can change your own habits and those of your children. Everyone can do their bit. Everyone.

2 loads of washing per week, so in our house we have 35 pairs of pants, 35 pairs of socks, 21 bras, 35 t-shirts, plus bedding for 5 beds each with at least 4 pillows on the bed, 7 tea towels, 7 guest towels, plus jumpers and trousers how are you only doing 2 washes a week, bedding takes up a load each unless its a single.

OP posts:
MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 12/04/2024 13:26

I do what I thought was a lot of washing, 7/8 loads a week , 2 adults 1 child. DH and I both go to the gym 3/4 times a week, DS has school, a sport or activity with uniform every day after school barring one, and clean pyjamas every night.
Bedding never needs washing twice a week unless someone is ill/incontinent , towels do not need washing after every use. This is massively increasing your utility bills and spend on cleaning products. Showering twice a day is excessive too, I went to the gym last night, sorted and washed my hair, got up this morning and had a quick splash under the shower but no need to wash hair again.
I would imagine if you're over using washing powder you also over use shower gel, shampoo etc. I agree you have OCD traits and your rigidity to these responses further supports that.
You asked if you or your husband were correct, he is. The amount of products and energy you use is excessive.

Where have a said that I am not doing my part, I know for a fact that me doing an online shop is better than someone going out in their diesel car to get their shopping.

My habits are usual expect my washing (which I have stated numerous times I will reduce) I am on a par with most other posters in our use of toilet roll, shower gel, shampoo.

Your use of the word shit really was not needed and believe me most people shower daily and use products.

Again there is your obsessive belief that any one saying you over consume or wash too much is unclean!!! It is so rude. Listen to yourself. Almost everyone is saying they also shower once a day and ARE clean but don’t feel need to use so much products. It’s not the personal care that’s the problem it’s the overuse of products! And I’m pretty sure as shit sure that the word shit is okay to use on MN.

12 per month, we go through 12 a week! My husband thinks this is excessive.
We go through 2 bottles of fabric conditioner a week, and a box of scent boasters.
Washing powder is at least 2 84 washes a month.
Deodorant is 2 cans each per month.
Everyone is proving my husband right.......

170 washes a month seems excessive. Thats nearly 6 loads a day

Well you've got other people making the house look nice and the clothes and bedding all ironed so it's easy to feel joyful. When you've got an ironing pile like the leaning tower of Pisa you'd start thinking about cutting down on laundry.

Evvyjb · 12/04/2024 13:39

Good lord.

We shower daily. Change bedding + towels once a week. Fresh shirt/top/underwear every day (and other things if smelly). But we also..

  • use maybe a loo roll a week between us (bum guns)
  • go through maybe a fabric conditioner bottle every 2 months
  • washing up liquid every 3 months
  • dishwasher on every other day
  • soap rather than shower gel
  • shampoo lasts at least 6 weeks (wash hair every 3/4 days)
  • refillable products wherever possible
  • no kitchen roll/single use household wipes

Our house is definitely clean, as are we. I'm APPALLED by your usage...

I have now said countless times, I can see that I should reduce my amount of washing and we can wash the towels once a week, our bedding was only washed twice a week in the height of summer.

I have said that we sometimes shower twice a day, if needed not everyday! Yet you have had a shower twice in say 15 hours just like us on somedays.

So you do 7/8 loads of washing a week once I have cut down on the towels I will be washing the same amount as you per person.

My husband is the one that wants the heating kept on all day as this is more cost effective, as the temp does not drop in the house.

Family of 4 similar ages, we do 1 wash per day!! 25 washes a week, I suspect you all have too many clothes. Also, every item doesn't need washing immediately after 1 wear! Bedding twice a week wow! Do you have time for anything else in life other than the laundry??

So there are 2 of week compared to 5 of us.

Hair washed everyday for my girls they go to our gym daily and horse ride.

I wash my hair every other day, unless going out.

My use of washing up liquid is probably the same as you every 6 weeks, dishwasher on daily.

As I have said my laundry will now be reduced,.

I am unsure of why you are APPALLED, what we use is on par with most posters.

I respectfully suggest that you are doing an excessive volume of laundry. Things can be used and worn more than once. This could be a very easy budgeting win if you dial it down a bit.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 12/04/2024 13:49

I'm not sure why you started this thread, you seem very defensive, I also find it unbelievable that just by cutting down towel washing you will reduce to 2 loads per person per week.

You've also not considered what I said about over using products, if you have a 3 minute shower with a 10p sized blob of shower gel (as I did this morning, availed myself of gym showers last night) you wouldn't be getting through it at the rate you are.

If you overuse laundry products because you like the smell, are you also over using shampoo, handsoap, shower gel, air freshener etc, reduction of all of these things will reduce your spend. Equally 12 toilet rolls a week is crazy, we get through a couple so even doubling that it would only be 4 , 5 to be generous. Again are you excessive in using toilet paper because it links to your beliefs around cleanliness? These attitudes will have also been passed on to your children making them high consumers too.
