Who is being unreasonable?

TheSpoonyNavyReader · 12/04/2024 09:24

My husband and I are having a debate and I would like to know who is wrong. I am posting in AIBU for traffic.

We are a family of 5.

3 working full time. 1 working part time and one at Sixth form.

How many of the following do a family like ours use.

Toilet rolls
Kitchen rolls
bottles of shower gel
Bottles of shampoo and conditioner
Fabric conditioner
Washing pods
Deodorant
Tooth paste
Gas and electric per month.

And any other items that you buy weekly/monthly.

Settle a debate and help me prove my Husband wrong.

I read it fine the first time. Your daughters wash thier hair every day.

washing your clothes after every wear IS excessive, as verfied by the countless people on here telling you that.

You do you. But you're making yourself look utterley spoiled and obnoxious and I for one hope your kids dont have these values.

I thought you were out but yet you have responded again.

I am not insufferable but when idiots like you just come on to have a pop then I will defend myself!

My kids are lovely, I hope that your kids do not turn out like you.

Take care sweetie.

You buy 3 bottles of wine that cost 25 quid? Then brag about it on Mumsnet when people tell you that yes, you are overspending compared to MOST OF THE POPULATION.

You're obnoxious and I'm out lol.

I was answering a question, My husband and I have worked our way up to where we can afford things above, a poster asked me a direct question hence what I wrote. Not a brag.

I am not overspending if I can afford it. Would it make you feel better if I was only buying a bottle for a fiver, YOU DO KNOW PEOPLE CAN BUY WHAT THEY LIKE.

Would you like to control what everyone in the UK buys just so you can feel better.

Just seen this thread. Household of 4 with just the one bathroom lol. We do 5 loads of washing a week, 2 lots of clothing, 1 load of whites, a load of towels and bedding. A big box of laundry detergent lasts me a while. A bottle of fabric conditioner the same.
Go through 6 toilet rolls a week.
1 kitchen roll.
The men use 1 bottle of shower gel weekly between them and me and dd use 1 bottle of shower gel weekly and 1 bottle of shampoo every 2 weeks. I have finally managed to convince her that she only needs to wash her hair every other day. I wash mine every 4 days. We both have very thick, long hair. We are still searching for a decent shampoo bar. We all like branded shower products so spend far more than I would like on toiletries.
Men use spray deodorant, go through one each every 10 days maybe? Me and dd use a Mitchum stick, we use one a month each.
All have 1 shower a day but are all in and out in 5/10 minutes.
We wear jumpers again and jeans, everything else is put in wash basket after 1 wear.
All have own towels that are washed once a week. No one actually dries themselves with a towel in this house though we seem to waft about and air dry!

I reckon you have gone nose blind OP. Especially with the laundry stuff. I change every few months for this reason. I am not passing any judgement on anything else because well, we all do what we can don't we? You have an EV, mine is diesel. I have my budget, you have yours.

OP why are you being so vile to other posters?

It seems like over defensiveness plus wanting to show everyone how rich you are.

I am treating people with the same distain that they are showing me.

Please show me where I am vile to people for the sake of it....

I may not, but so have a huge amount of posters on here.

I was asked questions that I have answered and on some points I have conceded that I am wrong and have made changes.

People read the comment about wine wrong and asked how much I spent, hence how I answered.

In our circle and that of all our families this is a normal way of spending and living.

Can I ask what prompted you to ask if you were being unreasonable in the first place? You obviously don't believe you are and despite saying your husband brought it up you have since said he's not got a problem so what made you ask?

We were doing our yearly spreadsheet, and working out want we needed to put aside for savings, investments etc.

Seeing the cost of our main shop per week, we were both a little shocked, we then broke it down by going onto the our recent shops online and our toileteries and cleaning products was high, hence my question.

I have now put less fabric conditioner in the washing and not washing the towels so much. I do blame my Mum as I did what she always did and I have a referral to see if I have OCD.

I replied earlier in the post, older 2 boys are at work all and quite often out in the evenings with girlfriends. DH is at work all day and ds3 at school. I also think boys use less toilet roll, ahem! x

It’s about making tiny sustainable changes, like you’ve done…I hope you don’t have OCD as I know from a friend who has it his debilitating and intrusive it can be….if you do though, hopefully you’ll get coping mechanisms

Thank you for your kind and considered post.

I have made changes and I am proud of them.

My daughter has OCD, and I have seen the challenges that she has encountered and I would not wish it on anyone, people just think its about cleaning its so much more than that. The constant rechecking, the making sure things are lined up, only being able to eat 2 of things, knowing that if she does not then she will have to restart a whole meal.
