Husband stole kids' Easter eggs

Not sure if this is unreasonable, my friends seem to agree with me but wanted an outsider's opinion...

I'll try to keep this short.

Last night my hubby went out to the pub while I stayed home with the kids. I fancied a night out myself- haven't had one in months- but didn't have the option since he wanted to see the lads. He said he would go only have a few rounds and be home by about 10:00-10:30pm, but stumbled in at about 1. I was already in bed, and woke up to the slam of the front door but fell back asleep shortly after he came in. This morning I woke up around 6am to set up the kids Easter egg hunt, but to my surprise the cupboard was empty. I then found a huge heap of cardboard and tin foil beside the sofa. All 4 Easter eggs- 2 each for the kids- were demolished, along with brown smears all over our new beige sofa. LIVID!
It's not the first time he's done this too! My 7 year old daughter's Christmas chocolate disappeared late one night, luckily with enough time to replace before Xmas day. But this time, I've had no chance to.
My kids came downstairs so excited this morning but their faces absolutely dropped as I told them what happened. My husband was hungover and dead asleep in bed until midday, when he got up I explained to him how upset he's made the kids. He didn't even bat an eyelid before he went to make his coffee.

I've asked him to stay at his mums for the next few nights, or until he replaces the chocolate (which he's refusing to do). AIBU?

@AnnBoo Did he replace the chocolate? Or is he sulking at him mum’s and waiting for you to just accept his behaviour and have him back?

(Also what kind of MIL do you have: will she be disgusted with him or indulgent of him? That may make a difference. Sadly, given he has form for this level of selfishness, I fear he may be mummy’s little darling who can do no wrong).

Might do if I was really really drunk.

would get bus in to town immediately upon waking up with feeling of remorse, and explain that the Easter Bunny was running later owing to questions having been raised about the Orthdox vs Western interpretation of when Easter comes around.

It's Easter Sunday and most shops will be shut. A garage might keep Easter eggs . Might.

He was on our doorstep for two hours arguing this - we agreed to differ in the end.

If he's been the same at every house he's visited it'll be the Assumption before those eggs are delivered.

Sounds like something my ex husband would have done. Life has been much nicer without him.

riceuten · 02/04/2024 10:26

I assume the OP has accepted him back into the home, as we've heard no more.

Chocolate isn’t even the thing you crave when you’ve been drinking, and not in such quantities…it seems deliberate!

Yes i was thinking this, I love chocolate, but I can't eat it if I've been drinking I'd want a pizza or something else savoury. I can't understand how people can eat sweet stuff after or while drinking. And even people who could eat chocolate when drinking surely wouldn't eat their own kids easter eggs. And even as much as I love chocolate I couldn't eat four whole eggs! I'd feel a bit sickly after eating a full one at once unless it was one of the really small ones

GingersOwner26 · 02/04/2024 12:56

To those saying OP was in the wrong for telling the children what happened: it sounds from the post like it was a case of them coming down, there were no eggs left because pisshead had eaten them, and it doesn't sound like there would have been the opportunity to replace them before the children found out as there was with the Christmas chocolate incident. There wouldn't have been much time before they got up, and also bearing in mind shops being closed and likelihood that any that were open may have had little to no choice, (which we can't know for sure), how else was OP supposed to explain it to the children when they came down to find no eggs? Even if she was inclined to try and come up with a convincing lie there wouldn't have been much time to think of one, and really why should she have to?

OnGoldenPond · 02/04/2024 13:28

Shittiness doesn't get much lower than this. Your poor DC! This is the kind of crap they will remember their whole lives. Please make it the last straw that gives you the push to get rid of him. I'm just gobsmacked at how little he cares about his own family. So sorry OP Flowers

NatNoo · 31/03/2024 15:45

YABU. Everyone does things they regret when they’re drunk. Surely you have a shop locally where you can get some replacements.

What ??? Stealing your owns DC's Easter eggs is just about the lowest, shittiest thing a parent can do and being drunk makes no difference. Drink just lowers inhibitions, it doesn't change you into a different person. You have pretty low standards to think there can be any excuse for this.

Haven't read the while thread- too much outrage to deal with.

My question is, why did you tell the children what he had done? They would be disappointed by the lack of chocolate, why make them feel shit about their dad too? You sound mean.

So what was she supposed to say? The Easter bunny doesn’t care about you so didn’t come? I don’t care do didn’t bother? She would have had to made up some elaborate story and lied to her kids?

Springtime79 · 02/04/2024 15:22

StormingNorman · 01/04/2024 23:18

You were both BU.

He shouldn’t have eaten the eggs. You should have sent him out to replace them and done the egg hunt later in the day. No need to tell the kids at all. You told DC to punish your husband.

out of the two of you, you were more unreasonable because you brought the kids into it.

No way. I’m gobsmacked people are apportioning any blame on the OP for this.
my kids come down to their eggs first thing Easter morning. It’s always been that way-they would know if there were no eggs. There would be no hiding it.

and moreover he showed not a shred of remorse for his actions when he had sobered up and refused point blank to replace the eggs. What sort of a lowlife is he

some people on MN will do everything possible to find a woman responsible for her husband’s failings. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Springtime79 · 02/04/2024 18:10

@Astariel wild isn’t it

BombBiggleton · 02/04/2024 18:19

I can't believe this is the only red flag this absolute wanker has flown.

If he's capable of this, God knows what else he's capable of.

Get rid of him for good.

T1Dmama · 02/04/2024 22:00

So glad I’m single

T1Dmama · 02/04/2024 22:07

Your husband cares for no one but himself! Sure we all have done something daft when drunk…. But he’s a grown arse adult and needs to grow up! To steal his own kids eggs and not even apologise and ‘refuse’ to replace them… total arse hole!

By far a tiny goady minority and worthy of disregard

Still reeling over this despite being thankfully nothing to do with this loser.

I wouldn’t have any trust in him being around my DC either due to his total lack of respect and regard for their feelings

My ex used to drink the baby's milk out of the fridge when he was pissed up. I used to have to leave the house at 6am & run to the local garage to buy more. So yes, I can well believe someone would be that selfish.

😮😢

LoveAutumnColours · 04/04/2024 09:38

Frankly, as he had history if this, why weren’t these hidden from him? Also, my husband doesn’t do this, but I e always bought him. Chocolate because, who doesn’t like chocolate? He buys for me too. So we adults have our own (Easter, Valentine’s Day, Christmas, mother’s/father’s day).

he’s a selfish lout but turn this into learning experience - hide the choccy and get him his own.

He’s selfish but you must learn how to mitigate it and pander to him?!?

This is advice from Patriarchy 101.

The next class will be don’t go out in the dark or wear a short skirt because you know some men can’t help themselves presumably. 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️😫

OldScribbler · 05/04/2024 08:39

I guess you're stuck with him. He sounds ghastly ...

Merida46 · 10/04/2024 16:51

Put some laxative in his morning coffee and hopefully he will shit himself on the train!
