Husband stole kids' Easter eggs

Not sure if this is unreasonable, my friends seem to agree with me but wanted an outsider's opinion...

I'll try to keep this short.

Last night my hubby went out to the pub while I stayed home with the kids. I fancied a night out myself- haven't had one in months- but didn't have the option since he wanted to see the lads. He said he would go only have a few rounds and be home by about 10:00-10:30pm, but stumbled in at about 1. I was already in bed, and woke up to the slam of the front door but fell back asleep shortly after he came in. This morning I woke up around 6am to set up the kids Easter egg hunt, but to my surprise the cupboard was empty. I then found a huge heap of cardboard and tin foil beside the sofa. All 4 Easter eggs- 2 each for the kids- were demolished, along with brown smears all over our new beige sofa. LIVID!
It's not the first time he's done this too! My 7 year old daughter's Christmas chocolate disappeared late one night, luckily with enough time to replace before Xmas day. But this time, I've had no chance to.
My kids came downstairs so excited this morning but their faces absolutely dropped as I told them what happened. My husband was hungover and dead asleep in bed until midday, when he got up I explained to him how upset he's made the kids. He didn't even bat an eyelid before he went to make his coffee.

I've asked him to stay at his mums for the next few nights, or until he replaces the chocolate (which he's refusing to do). AIBU?

@Lovemusic82 I'm actually considering that, so disappointed 🤬

I hope you are seriously considering it, for your children's sake.

This is damaging for them. They known what happened. They know they can't rely on him - worse, they now fear he will ruin their special occasions and things. They are aware he has lost control of himself because of alcohol. They know they have only one reliable parent.

This is a horrible experience for children.

Please take this seriously.

InfiniteGoodVibes · 01/04/2024 05:44

I simply cannot imagine being married to such a selfish, gluttonous cretin.

Seems it isn't unusual either based on posts here. I would have zero respect for someone like this, and the lack of remorse would see me calling a divorce lawyer this week. Coming home so drunk he ate his small childrens easter eggs is so grim that there would be no future with him left.

OP, it is rather telling you let him sleep until midday too. I hope you take this time to seriously think about who you are married to and what you are modelling to your children. He not only ate your children's eggs but he ruined the day for you all as well. I would not want to stay with this low-life another day longer than I had to.

YABU. Everyone does things they regret when they’re drunk. Surely you have a shop locally where you can get some replacements.

1 - Have you ever tried getting last minute eggs??

2 - he didn’t even say sorry…..

Autienotnaughtie · 01/04/2024 06:43

It's the fact that he must know that by eating the chocolate his kids would wake up at Easter to nothing. And he didn't care.

I'd find it hard to forgive.

Prunesqualler · 01/04/2024 03:06

So sorry for you and for your kids but I really want to give a huge shout out for your very kind friend for stepping in and giving you some eggs for the kids.
How very kind and it’s lovely that you have that support

I second that. What a lovely friend to come to your rescue and help make your children's day a better one than their own__ disgusting excuse of a father.

It sounds like he disrespects you too OP, so I don't blame you for reconsidering your relationship with him. I'm willing to bet this isn't the first instance of poor behaviour from him. Getting your ducks in a row won't hurt so you know how well you'd manage in a future without him. 🌹

QuantumQuasar · 01/04/2024 07:12

My dad used to do this kind of thing to me when I was a child. Not drunk, though.

It wasn't the whole egg, as far as I remember. He did things like take out the easter egg, the night before I assume, remove the extra accompanying treat from the egg, eat it, then wrap the egg back up. If I got upset, he would laugh and tease me and say I wasn't deprived so why whine. If I continued to be upset he would get cross and I'd be told off.

It wasn't just Easter. Any treats I had at any time were at risk of being either nibbled from or entirely eaten. It became a running joke that anything sweet in the house might disappear if he knew about it.

The way it was put to me is that my dad was horrifically abused as a child (which is true, he really was), and this was just behaviour that stemmed from that and we needed to be understanding. If I complained to mum, she pointed out all the other generous things he did for me. Which is true, he did.

I don't think I have hard feelings about as an adult. I think it's probably minor in the grand scheme of things. But it has made me very territorial about food. I refuse to share puddings in particular, and I do tend to overeat and eat quickly. It took me a while to fully trust that my DH, for example, really would never eat my food and that I could leave it safely in the fridge.

betterangels · 01/04/2024 07:55

Of course you're not unreasonable. He should stay away indefinitely. He sounds like an arsehole.

SpringleDingle · 01/04/2024 07:55

I’d actually divorce him for this show of utter disrespect for you but more so for his kids. What a cunt!

betterangels · 01/04/2024 07:59

AnnBoo · 31/03/2024 17:32

Thanks @beautybabe44 for your support & thanks to everyone for your supportive comments & those who've confirmed I'm not being unreasonable. Things are better now that it's just me & the kids & hubby has gone to his mums.

You should probably hold on to that thought. Life could be better. Not just the day.

YesitsJacqueline · 01/04/2024 08:20

I don't think this is about the chocolate is it?
Its because your husband is selfish and opts out of family life to live like a single man.
He does what he wants and your feelings don't come into it.

Please disregard the Easter eggs and wake up to the bigger picture. And I say this with kindness as someone that's been there.

AloeVerity · 01/04/2024 08:26

I rarely say this but end it. What a nasty piece of work. He’s made a mockery of the time and effort you put into doing something nice for the DC, stolen, ruined furniture, and shown no remorse. He literally doesn’t give a hoot about anyone but himself. Fuckity bye to him!

Dibilnik · 01/04/2024 08:39

Hurraaaah for him leaving the house. Don't let him back in!

If you sweep this under the carpet, there will be plenty more...

Happy Easter and enjoy your chocolate in peace!

Mintyt · 01/04/2024 08:51

When someone shows you who they are believe them

JFDIYOLO · 01/04/2024 08:55

What a selfish, thoughtless, emotionally stunted shit.

I hope you spelled out to his mum what he did?

This isn't about chocolate though, is it.

The drinking, the slobbishness, the greed, the squalid behaviour and lack of impulse control or remorse for the kids' upset - there will be more of this to come.

So what kind of a life are you planning for yourself and the children?

BMW6 · 01/04/2024 08:56

The whole thing smacks of sheer nastiness towards children. Cruelty even.

Who would even think of doing this, even pissed up?

brickday · 01/04/2024 09:07

YABU you should have bought hubby an easter egg if you didn't want him to eat the kids ones!!

Put your rod away, nobody is falling for your wind-ups.

Whyarepeoplesoweird · 01/04/2024 09:28

Na. Id divorce my husband over something as 'daft' as this. He'd be banned for eternity from all nights out ...couldn't live with a man like this.

iamwhatiam23 · 01/04/2024 09:29

I would end it for that! Selfish pig.

Seriously? Hubby could have bought his own chocolate. He's an adult, presumably, despite all evidence to the contrary.

Edited

He would have probably eaten his AND the kids.
