DH and his sandwiches - I'm gonna go postal

mynamechange94 · 20/03/2024 20:31

Ever since lockdown started and DH has mostly been working from home, he has a sandwich for lunch with little cubes of cheese and cold meats etc. Every day, pretty much, he has the same sandwich.

And every single god damn fucking day he leaves the chopping board, bread knife and butter knife on the kitchen counter.

I've asked. I've pleaded. I've threatened a star chart. Nothing has worked.

AIBU to lose my shit soon if he can't just put the knives and chopping board in the washing up before he eats?

I'm obviously not perfect, and I'm well aware that I have wildly irritating habits too, but I just want him to put the stuff in the washing up pile. Is that really too much to ask? AIBU?

You both agreed to leave all dirty dishes until the eve? So where should he put the stuff from his lunch, the sink? Where?!!

thaegumathteth · 20/03/2024 21:22

Put them in the dishwasher / sink. The whole kitchen must be a mess by the end of the day otherwise surely?

Well not really, the breakfast things are next to the sink and if there's also something from making lunch I would shove that next to the sink as well before making dinner. I have more than one square foot of surface space in my kitchen, la di da.

ObsidianTree · 20/03/2024 21:28

Stop buying the ingredients he needs for his sandwiches. Or hide the knives, chopping board and the normal knives 🤣 so he can't make the sandwiches and is also very inconvenienced

If he never clears any of it up, even after eating YANBU.

If he eats and then clears up, YABU.

This. I’m guilty of leaving the prep utensils until I’ve eaten too. I clear up afterwards.

I haven’t heard anyone say “go postal” for ages!

Me neither. I love it.

But I couldn't care less if my husband left a chopping board and knife out.

BobbyBiscuits · 20/03/2024 22:15

He should buy a bunch of plastic plates, and cut his food on them using plastic cutlery. Sorry, whatever the woke version of plastic is now.
A sandwich should not create that level of mess. He should cube the whole pack of cheese in one go and bag it up. You're not even asking him to wash them...if he won't buy that stuff you but it and hide the chopping board and good knives.

PennyPugwash · 20/03/2024 22:28

My husband has the most annoying habit of taking his socks off in the evening whilst he watching tv in the living room, and leaving them there!!!

Like you, I've tried EVERYTHING to get him to put them in the wash basket on his way up the stairs.

He ignores me.

Now I take the socks and pop them on the bonnet of his car....

Been a few days without smelly socks on the couch now.
Winner!

PossumintheHouse · 20/03/2024 22:48

Don't touch it. Literally don't touch it. The next day, he can go back and cut his sandwich with a manky knife. And the next day. And the next. And eventually if he doesn't get the message, he's gone. The end.

Beamur · 20/03/2024 22:51

Put it all in the sink.
Cover with lighter fluid.
Ignite

Put it on his desk. Every time.

Absolutely this

Shove them under his pillow...

For some reason this made me hoot with laughter. Thank you. I can now go to bed happy.

Littleguggi · 20/03/2024 22:58

I don't get what the big deal is. I am guilty of doing this, but things do eventually get put in the sink and washed.

I wonder if you're actually annoyed about something much bigger in your relationship but it's easier to take it out on this seemingly mundane situation (I'm not a psychologist btw)

Take the knives and chopping board out with you to work one day. Say nothing. Act dumb.

I dunno why but this reminds me when I used to get grounded by my mum and she would take the computer router AND entire keyboard and mouse to work with her in a carrier bag so I couldn't use it when she was out 😂😂😂😂😂😭

Start stuffing them down the side of the sofa/armchair he sits at. Initially it won’t be noticeable but it will become noticeable either when it’s crammed with socks and bulging, or when he hasn’t got any clean ones to wear which would be the funniest outcome 🤭

WishesPromised · 20/03/2024 23:06

Just put them on his desk.

PennyPugwash · 20/03/2024 23:07

@Wigtopia hehehe 🤣

Do the cubes of cheese not fall out of the sandwich?

I read it as a sandwich with adjacent cubes of cheese. I could be wrong 🤷🏻‍♀️

Isthismyforever · 20/03/2024 22:51

I have never heard of 'go postal', what does it mean?

Urban dictionary says “The origin of the phrase derives from a series of incidents involving U.S. Postal workers, who shot and killed fellow workers and members of the public in 1986. The first recorded use was in an article by Karl Vick's 'Violence at work tied to loss of esteem' in 1993 “

Themaghag · 20/03/2024 23:17

You aren’t being unreasonable. When my DH started WFH he chose to work on the kitchen table despite the fact that there were at least three better spaces in other rooms. Every night I would come home to a variety of mugs, glasses and plates scattered over every surface, together with the debris from various snacks and immediately felt furious - so much so that I’d start tidying up before I even took my coat off in a really pas-ag way. I’d then have to start preparing dinner while navigating a path around his stuff, dangling leads and his chair in order to get from fridge to oven to sink. I solved the problem by WFH myself and insisting that he worked from a desk in one spare room while I worked from a desk in another. It was either that or kill him!

5foot5 · 20/03/2024 23:18

This sounds like a very trivial thing to get so worked up about.

By the by, what always irritates me is when someone puts dirty pots in the sink rather than beside it. DH does this sometimes and I make a point of taking them straight out and placing them at the side. The message never sinks in though.

DuckyShincracker · 20/03/2024 23:18

Make the star chart and make it big! ⭐️

pinkdelight · 20/03/2024 23:20

I couldn't care less about that stuff. As long as he does it later let him eat the sandwich without instantly doing a chore. It's not like you're super tidy if it's all getting piled up till the end of the day anyway.

pinkdelight · 20/03/2024 23:21

The cheese cubes are weird though - why so tiny? Does he suck them??
