To be irritated about DP and the tunnel?

DP (we don’t live together) has just moved into a new house. It’s in a right state, needs ridiculous amounts of work doing to it including a whole new heating system (currently just has coal fires in each room!) new bathrooms (of which there are 3) and roofing repairs etc etc - he kind of inherited it but not completely, he has had to pay for it but at a daft price. It’s a listed building with land, pretty isolated.

Anyway! He’s been in there a few weeks and found a tunnel in the basement that was bricked up but the bricks had began to fall apart which is how the tunnel came to light. I found this fascinating and asked where it led and he said he didn’t know. I asked “did you not go in it??” And he said “no, it won’t be anything excited”. Why would you not go in it?? I’m desperate to know where it leads!! I’ve asked him a few times to have a look and he said he has more important things to be doing - I can’t get my head around it!!

im staying there at weekend and I said I’m going to explore the tunnel - he rolled his eyes and said “ffs can you stop fascinating over that stupid tunnel?”

it’s making me quite annoyed

It went quite some way and then there appeared to be a corner, I sent car around it and then there was a little crash 😂 tried to reverse it but could hear the wheels spinning so it’s clearly got stuck 🤦‍♀️ I’m just going to go in and get it tomorrow, as has been said it’s been there over 100 years by looks of it, I’d have to be bloody unlucky to have it collapse on me now 😂

What did you find op?

fromtheshires · 22/03/2024 07:29

Marking my place for the update.

Not going to lie, I'd have been down there in a shot. My friend owns an old 16th century pub. There is a cellar as it's been found on radar type things but finding the entrance has been impossible for them. Id have been ripping floors up listed building or not 😂.

There is also talks of smuggling tunnels as the village is a big smuggling area. She just accepts they may or may not be there

TesticularHeft · 22/03/2024 07:48

Oh no. Maybe we should have pushed for no more!

BlueEyesBrownHair · 22/03/2024 07:48

So what happened? Im fearing the tunnel collapsing with op in there 🥹

RockHardCake · 22/03/2024 10:36

Ok so I went in, it’s really bloody strange and I’m even more intrigued now. The tunnel actually splits in two directions. I’d promised DP I would get the car and that’s it so I couldn’t explore further. The car was stuck on some wooden crate type things and it was really wet down there and smelt awful. He’s going to have to get it looked at professionally but I’m dying to know where it leads. So far the most likely explanation is that the part where the car was leads somewhere into the village (possibly the church?) but the other side is a complete mystery

Glad you got in and back out safely OP, and thank you for the update.
We are however, all invested in this story now and will need MORE when you do further investigations please!

You're intrigued? So are we! I feel like this needs to be a Youtube Live stream so we can watch the exploration.

From what you have described it sounds like there may be tunnels to other properties or even an escape tunnel from the property to somewhere like a copse.

Forget the smell and scratch our itch @RockHardCake 😂

sashh · 22/03/2024 11:33

Photos OP?

areyoutheregod · 22/03/2024 11:37

Wow! what an update, thats quite spooky! He will have to get it looked at for sure. I wonder if you can do a bit of online research into the property and area and its history until then?

BlueEyesBrownHair · 22/03/2024 11:53

Do you have to crawl in there or stoop low? Youll have to go back in. Im intrigued!

Caerulea · 22/03/2024 11:53

OK, repeat after me!

'I am a strong, independent woman! If I want to get squished by falling tunnels, fall into a portal to the nether, get eaten* by zombies or pop up into Mrs Smetherington's cellar unannounced by way of secret tunnel then by GOSH I will darn well do it! No lily livered manthing will stop me!'

Look forward to further updates.

*possibly befriended, no need to stereotype anyone & apologies to any zombie or zombie adjacent people whom I might have offended

HullaBallu · 22/03/2024 11:56

Ngggh, I'm never going to be able to get this thread out of my head now.

Somatosensational · 22/03/2024 12:00

As a child I remember exploring the cellar of a friend's Georgian house which had a tunnel, and which we of course crawled through. The floor was just dirt and there were puddles and random empty bottles. It smelt horrible, had lots of cobwebs and was generally very creepy. I can't remember where it led, maybe we didn't make it all the way. I doubt the tunnel would cave in, I mean it will have been standing for 200 years or so.

areyoutheregod · 22/03/2024 12:05

I really hope we get footage of this tunnel now! or is it... tunnels? My imagination is going wild.

Projectme · 22/03/2024 12:33

ooOOoo!!! This is just like reading a Famous Five novel!!

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 22/03/2024 13:56

I'm so glad I clicked on this thread ! I thought it was going to be something boring about gardening but no Grin

mindutopia · 22/03/2024 14:17

This is wonderful. I would see if you have a local historical society or anyone at a local library/museum who could help you do some research.

Hoplolly · 22/03/2024 14:57

There's rumours of tunnels in the town near me and there's a local company that goes in and scans searching for them. I'd post on a local Facebook group as people are so into this they often do it for free!

SoupDragon · 22/03/2024 16:05

it’s making me quite annoyed

Guess how annoyed it's making all the interested people here that you haven't provided photos...

Balloonhearts · 22/03/2024 16:12

My nan had a hidden tunnel. It came out at the bottom of the neighbours garden. We weren't allowed in it though as lots of rubble made it unsafe.

Mnk711 · 22/03/2024 18:45

Just go in and look properly, if you don't disturb anything it won't cave in. Don't move rocks or open gates inside and you'll be fine. Go nosing! Very cool, I'd love to have that in my house.

Amonthinthecountry · 23/03/2024 08:54

Oh come on. Get your wellies and a bright torch and just go for it!!

TheGreatGherkin · 23/03/2024 08:58

I'd be elbowing him out of the way and removing bricks to have a look.

Ponoka7 · 23/03/2024 09:13

I'd get in touch with the local history society, they'd be really interested in this.

Annielou67 · 23/03/2024 12:09

do you have a fearless friend who will explore with you?
