To be irritated about DP and the tunnel?

DP (we don’t live together) has just moved into a new house. It’s in a right state, needs ridiculous amounts of work doing to it including a whole new heating system (currently just has coal fires in each room!) new bathrooms (of which there are 3) and roofing repairs etc etc - he kind of inherited it but not completely, he has had to pay for it but at a daft price. It’s a listed building with land, pretty isolated.

Anyway! He’s been in there a few weeks and found a tunnel in the basement that was bricked up but the bricks had began to fall apart which is how the tunnel came to light. I found this fascinating and asked where it led and he said he didn’t know. I asked “did you not go in it??” And he said “no, it won’t be anything excited”. Why would you not go in it?? I’m desperate to know where it leads!! I’ve asked him a few times to have a look and he said he has more important things to be doing - I can’t get my head around it!!

im staying there at weekend and I said I’m going to explore the tunnel - he rolled his eyes and said “ffs can you stop fascinating over that stupid tunnel?”

it’s making me quite annoyed

I have only read op's posts so sorry if someone else has suggested this.
You could get in one of those companies that deals with drain problems. When our victorian drain was blocked they put a camera down it using a flexible tube so they could see where the blockage was.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 20/03/2024 23:10

What about a drone? Usually I think they're the worst things ever, but we've finally found a worthy application!

MaybeRevisitYourWipingT3chnique · 21/03/2024 00:42

What's with all the woo and ridiculous fanciful theories?

Thinking logically, it's obviously going to be a portal to an illicit alien-led underground toilet brush factory, and the fates have schemed to lure you in there to kidnap you until you faithfully promise to work all hours to change the MN hive mind into embracing them again (not literally; just rebumperising their sales figures).

Beware: if you double-cross them and don't keep your solemn vow, you'll find that a 'pre-loved' one randomly appears in your dishwasher at dawn every Tuesday, but then mysteriously vanishes again without trace by noon.

Don’t forget your hard hat OP if you go in though what the good one will be if the house comes down on top of you

goingslightlyinsane · 21/03/2024 17:47

Waiting patiently for an update Blush
OP did you go in? Are you ok?

HoHoHoliday · 21/03/2024 18:51

Georgian house - probably too late for a priest escape route. Could have been added in the war as a shelter. I've heard it's not uncommon for these tunnels to exist, at one time there would be some connected underneath a village but usually when people come across them these days they are closed off at one end.

HoHoHoliday · 21/03/2024 18:52

I can't believe your partner isn't interested! If it were my house it would be the first place I would explore.

Sunnydaysathome · 21/03/2024 18:54

No no no just no. Dont go in it!!! This just reminds me of the nutty putty cave thing in the US 😳

Why no photos? You can get a decent photo with a smartphone.

Yeah, give us a picture, a brick, a drip, a cobweb, Sadako, anything...

Mnk711 · 21/03/2024 20:15

Did you rescue the car?!

noodlezoodle · 21/03/2024 21:03

Well that's it isn't it, she's gone for good.

Possibly the woman who pissed off the crows is down there too because she never came back either.

whereaw · 21/03/2024 21:18

Can't you get four children, with a parrot, lizard and some caterpillars to go explore it for you?

KnickerlessParsons · 21/03/2024 22:04

I told her to take her phone into the tunnel with her so she could phone for help.
(Does the 4G signal work from a parallel universe?)

Hoplolly · 21/03/2024 22:07

Waiting for an update....and scouring the news for tunnel collapses

B1anche · 21/03/2024 22:27

I reckon she's having a Goonies style adventure - tunnels, grottos, pirate ship, treasure etc. She'll update us when she's back

elf1985 · 21/03/2024 22:39

Is there a church nearby? Or a pub? A really old pub I worked in had a tunnel in the cellar to the local church, it's called a priests hole, and was used so that the local vicar could get to the pub cellar in world war 2 incase of bombings.

Somatosensational · 21/03/2024 22:44

I'm having flashbacks to the Crow thread. That OP also didn't make it.

This is a tunnel not a tiny gap in a cave system.

OP Come back.

I'm guessing it is one of the secret telephone exchanges that were built in WWII.

The link is to the Aux units but there were also telephone exchanges, the aux units probably didn't know about.

Churchill's Secret Army

The Auxiliary Units were the brainchild of Sir Winston Churchill after the evacuation of Dunkirk. Highly trained and totally secret, their job was to provide resistance to the invading German army...

It went quite some way and then there appeared to be a corner, I sent car around it and then there was a little crash 😂 tried to reverse it but could hear the wheels spinning so it’s clearly got stuck 🤦‍♀️ I’m just going to go in and get it tomorrow, as has been said it’s been there over 100 years by looks of it, I’d have to be bloody unlucky to have it collapse on me now 😂

Ooh. I'm East Yorks. Watching with interest. From my 1954 semi.

LittleMissSleepyUK · 22/03/2024 06:25

for all of us you need to go in the tunnel!!!

murphys · 22/03/2024 06:31

Can we have a photo please.

PenelopeTheShroudWeaver · 22/03/2024 06:41

I'm way too invested in this!

Projectme · 22/03/2024 06:46

Showed DH the thread. He said 'what's the matter with the man ffs?! Get down that tunnel!!'.

Hope OP proper investigates and updates us.

I'm with the PP that it's a WW2 air raid shelter for the house and other nearby residents.

ChessieFL · 22/03/2024 06:59

Just marking my place for any tunnel updates!
