To be irritated about DP and the tunnel?

DP (we don’t live together) has just moved into a new house. It’s in a right state, needs ridiculous amounts of work doing to it including a whole new heating system (currently just has coal fires in each room!) new bathrooms (of which there are 3) and roofing repairs etc etc - he kind of inherited it but not completely, he has had to pay for it but at a daft price. It’s a listed building with land, pretty isolated.

Anyway! He’s been in there a few weeks and found a tunnel in the basement that was bricked up but the bricks had began to fall apart which is how the tunnel came to light. I found this fascinating and asked where it led and he said he didn’t know. I asked “did you not go in it??” And he said “no, it won’t be anything excited”. Why would you not go in it?? I’m desperate to know where it leads!! I’ve asked him a few times to have a look and he said he has more important things to be doing - I can’t get my head around it!!

im staying there at weekend and I said I’m going to explore the tunnel - he rolled his eyes and said “ffs can you stop fascinating over that stupid tunnel?”

it’s making me quite annoyed

I will not rest now until you have been down there OP and reported back.

@WillYouContribute I just snorted out my coffee!

My inner-child, who read many secret seven and famous five books, would be desperate to check out the tunnel.

(sensible me wants to check he's got listed building consent before he starts messing with the fabric of the building)

My first thought was the Famous Five 😆

BronwenTheBrave · 19/03/2024 07:29

So many red flags here. Time to reconsider your relationship. You deserve so much better than this.
Or I suppose you could just let him get on with the renovation work.

PandaChopChop · 19/03/2024 07:33

Placemarking. I have Got To Know where the tunnel goes!

soupfiend · 19/03/2024 07:33

Yes I would be interested and curious but not 'annoyed' if the OWNER of the house was not interested and curious.

His house, his feelings about it.

Its not for you to be annoyed at someone's view about THEIR OWN HOUSE.

Hillrunning · 19/03/2024 07:36

Shamelessly peacemaking because I ahve to know where the tunnel leads.

LunaNorth · 19/03/2024 07:43

Ooh, you’re near me, OP!

Can I come and explore your DP’s tunnel?

Erm. I might rephrase that…

jackstini · 19/03/2024 07:45

I'd have to check it out too!
You do know we will all be waiting for your update...

Meangirl6 · 19/03/2024 07:50

Something similar happened in Turkey and the man found like an underground city. He's opened it up as a tourist attraction I think. Have a Google, its amazing.

tanstaafl · 19/03/2024 07:53

You need
two people,
two candles
two torches ( that haven’t been used in years )

importantly, if you reach a junction, split up.

dont
take spare matches or batteries
check your phone battery is charged or you can get a signal underground.

p.s. I think DP is scared of spiders.

I’m in the area too, and up for the adventure!

SoupDragon · 19/03/2024 08:03

Yeah, this is going to be another disappointing "locked safe" thread.

BackOfTheMum5net · 19/03/2024 09:16

Please report back (and let us know you’re safe from your explorations, OP)!

MyDogLikesKayaking · 19/03/2024 09:28

There’s a big house in the village that was the old monastery. It has/had a tunnel to the church so the monks could go and pray in secret during the reformation period.

Yes could be an ice house.
ice was shipped from somewhere cold and stored underground for use through the summer.

Also thinking ice house. Have a look at the Trentham Estate in Staffordshire for an idea of how they were constructed. Apparently their network of ice houses was discovered by a student.

Our house is younger (1857 and not grand) but the cellar is a thing of beauty with massive wine racks built into an arch. There's a whole other world down there. Happy exploring!

brassbells · 19/03/2024 09:31

www.wightpedia.org.uk/w/Northwood_house_ice_house I think an "ICE HOUSE" is very likely after reading this

randomchap · 19/03/2024 09:32

I'd be concerned that it would lead to another version of the house where your DP has buttons for eyes

KimberleyClark · 19/03/2024 09:34

It’ll more than likely lead to a storage area.

Mama2many73 · 19/03/2024 09:38

Family member bought an old house which she knew had a basement. She boarded it up before moving in and has NEVER set foot in it or even seen pics! I think it's mental!

I'd want to investigate a Tunnel but only knowing it was safe!

KreedKafer · 19/03/2024 09:38

YANBU!

Under my inevitable dictatorship. there will be a law that says people who aren't prepared to investigate mysterious tunnels, secret passages and bricked-up sections of attics will be barred from owning historic properties.

MaybeRevisitYourWipingT3chnique · 19/03/2024 09:40

Are you sure that you haven't stumbled on his treasured Man Cave - with its plywood door designed to look like a brick wall?!

Ooh, there's a reason why Blyton never wrote Five Go To The New-Build 3-Bed Semi That's Identical To The Other 314 On The Controversial Edge-Of-Town Development Grin

Oh, I am so with you there, O Future Great One.

It also breaks my heart when people buy and destroy beautiful, unique, centuries-old, full-of-character period properties, only to replace them with a generic massive grey steel and glass box. If you don't want something, why buy it?

I've no idea how it could ever work in practice, but it's a shame we can't enact some kind of 'listed-lite' law - whereby you don't have to go through onerous bureaucracy trails every time you want to flush the toilet or plant some carrots in the garden; but only people who genuinely love and can be trusted to preserve the integrity of the place are allowed to live there in the first place!
