To be irritated about DP and the tunnel?

DP (we don’t live together) has just moved into a new house. It’s in a right state, needs ridiculous amounts of work doing to it including a whole new heating system (currently just has coal fires in each room!) new bathrooms (of which there are 3) and roofing repairs etc etc - he kind of inherited it but not completely, he has had to pay for it but at a daft price. It’s a listed building with land, pretty isolated.

Anyway! He’s been in there a few weeks and found a tunnel in the basement that was bricked up but the bricks had began to fall apart which is how the tunnel came to light. I found this fascinating and asked where it led and he said he didn’t know. I asked “did you not go in it??” And he said “no, it won’t be anything excited”. Why would you not go in it?? I’m desperate to know where it leads!! I’ve asked him a few times to have a look and he said he has more important things to be doing - I can’t get my head around it!!

im staying there at weekend and I said I’m going to explore the tunnel - he rolled his eyes and said “ffs can you stop fascinating over that stupid tunnel?”

it’s making me quite annoyed

Is it brick lined or carved into rock?

11NigelTufnel · 19/03/2024 09:54

My first thought is a plague pit, but that's probably because I have been binge watching Ghosts recently. I would be paying someone else to investigate. The idea of it collapsing while in there is all too real.

MaybeRevisitYourWipingT3chnique · 19/03/2024 10:50

I wonder if there have been any people in history who have deliberately added random, quirky, non-functional features to their homes - just for the enjoyment of thinking of people centuries later scratching their heads and puzzling over whatever they could be for!

I remember the first time I heard of the 'Winchester Mystery House' and I was determined to go and visit it - was gutted to discover that it was in Winchester, California; not Winchester, Hampshire!

WeeOrcadian · 19/03/2024 10:59

If you don't go and investigate, and then provide an update with photos, I'm going to hunt you down OP!!

I'd be concerned that it would lead to another version of the house where your DP has buttons for eyes

This made me laugh.

sashh · 19/03/2024 11:32

YABU to tell us about the tunnel when we can't see pictures.

getsomehelp · 19/03/2024 18:06

I know a family whose former generation owner of the family "pile" (Stage wagon stop, historic manor) ,filled the whole
below stairs kitchens etc with concrete.

"Too cold to heat"😭

A remote controlled toy car could be a way of exploring. I'd be curious just as long as a relatively safe way could be found.

Elphame · 19/03/2024 18:10

I'd be down there like a shot

My grandmother's house had a mysterious set of steps underneath the floor but she would never allow them to be explored. They were sealed up and carpeted over.

hurlyburlygirly · 19/03/2024 21:54

I actually had a childhood friend who lived in East Yorkshire whose family lived in a former hunting lodge and had a tunnel.

The whole place was ridiculously spooky. The windows used to somehow glow at night and there were constant bangs and sounds of footsteps.

RockHardCake · 19/03/2024 22:08

Roughly where in East Yorkshire? He actually stayed with me last night as the noises in the house had spooked him too much 😱😂 and there is definitely something creepy about the windows

BackOfTheMum5net · 19/03/2024 22:13

Is it likely to have been linked to the kitchens for cold storage of food and drink?

Maybe, there is servants stairs coming off the side of the kitchen leading to one of the bedrooms

Isittimeformynapyet · 20/03/2024 00:12

Do you know if you can walk upright in the tunnel or is it a crawl job?

Stringagal · 20/03/2024 00:17

Keepithidden · 18/03/2024 21:29

Have you never watched a horror movie OP?? It's the gates of hell/another dimension! There'll be cursed objects and all kinds of demons and stuff, everyone will die except for you. You'll end up in a padded cell having seen things no one should.

Don't say I didn't warn you!

But please do keep us updated from the padded cell

Just outside York, in the direction of Hull.

Ah very close but not the same house - this one is closer to hull than York

Uodate: I’m going today to errr … “help” with the renovation … I shall be looking at the tunnel and I might send a remote control car down it with a GoPro celotaped to the top of it 😂

Yes! Here for this!

Hope you enjoy your tunneling

Whatineed · 18/03/2024 21:32

Go and watch the film "Barbarian" op. 🤣🤣🤣

Saw that at the weekend and it immediately came to mind on seeing this thread!

No way would I be going down there, I couldn't even have a basement as I've watched enough horrors to know all bad things live or happen in the basement!

Yay! If you don't come back to the thread, we'll send out search parties.

Have you got a caving or mine society anywhere near you? They are good at exploring safely.

I have this vision of about 5 cavers turning up tooled up with ropes, hard hats and headlamps, only to find the tunnel ends after about 3 feet.

Cloudful · 20/03/2024 13:55

I wouldn’t even be able to live in the house with a portal to hell unidentified tunnel in the basement. I’m the type of person who runs from the fear, not towards it. But good luck in your endeavours op, I’ll be watching for updates because I might not be brave but I am curious!

scaredofff · 20/03/2024 13:55

You've got me hooked!! Can't wait to find out what you see on your adventure - good luck!!
