To be irritated about DP and the tunnel?

DP (we don’t live together) has just moved into a new house. It’s in a right state, needs ridiculous amounts of work doing to it including a whole new heating system (currently just has coal fires in each room!) new bathrooms (of which there are 3) and roofing repairs etc etc - he kind of inherited it but not completely, he has had to pay for it but at a daft price. It’s a listed building with land, pretty isolated.

Anyway! He’s been in there a few weeks and found a tunnel in the basement that was bricked up but the bricks had began to fall apart which is how the tunnel came to light. I found this fascinating and asked where it led and he said he didn’t know. I asked “did you not go in it??” And he said “no, it won’t be anything excited”. Why would you not go in it?? I’m desperate to know where it leads!! I’ve asked him a few times to have a look and he said he has more important things to be doing - I can’t get my head around it!!

im staying there at weekend and I said I’m going to explore the tunnel - he rolled his eyes and said “ffs can you stop fascinating over that stupid tunnel?”

it’s making me quite annoyed

I'd get a good torch and hard hat, and only go in a few feet. Don't go further without a professional!

How old is the property? If 16th century it could be a priest hole? Or, more likely, a coal chute?

It’s Georgian

You can’t go in without three other people and a dog - he is waiting for them to arrive before he sets off.

My first thought was priest hole as well.

Powderblue1 · 18/03/2024 21:13

Ooohhh I don't think I could wait until the weekend!

EveryKneeShallBow · 18/03/2024 21:14

My 60 year old self would be more concerned with who might come up the tunnel! (Not to mention what might come up).

mumda · 18/03/2024 21:15

Ice watched enough 'Casualty' to know not to explore further.

benjoin · 18/03/2024 21:16

It might collapse on you and kill you

Exactly. You'll end up with a whole house on top of your OP. Or at best trapped in with a tiny gap and they'll have to get you out in 50 minutes

RockHardCake · 18/03/2024 21:11

It is a big old house - near a village but not quite in the village.

How old is it? It wasn't unusual for big houses in 16th, 17th and 18th centuries to have tunnels that connected them to another building.

LuluBlakey1 · 18/03/2024 21:24

Ignore me- just seen it's Georgian.

Oh come on, this is like the locked safe thread of yore

Gettingbysomehow · 18/03/2024 21:26

I'd be down there like a rabbit. I'd have to know.

SanFranBear · 18/03/2024 21:28

Oh God - I would have to get down there, safety be damned although would probably shit myself at the dark and the cold and the sheer unknown! You absolutely must update if you venture in this weekend x

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 18/03/2024 21:29

I mean I'd be getting annoyed if you kept mentioning it

But I'd also want to explore

With some holy water, a crucifix and a wooden stake

Keepithidden · 18/03/2024 21:29

Have you never watched a horror movie OP?? It's the gates of hell/another dimension! There'll be cursed objects and all kinds of demons and stuff, everyone will die except for you. You'll end up in a padded cell having seen things no one should.

Don't say I didn't warn you!

Whatineed · 18/03/2024 21:32

Go and watch the film "Barbarian" op. 🤣🤣🤣

redalex261 · 18/03/2024 21:34

Like you I would absolutely have to explore. Would also be terrified it /collapsed/was haunted/contained murder victim/contained scary box holding demonic presence sealed up over 90 years ago by local demon-hunting vicar/contained a coffin (complete with vampire). Get yourself a flashlight. Check old OS maps and council plans at library.

If you make it out post update next Monday!

Vinvertebrate · 18/03/2024 21:39

I’m having flashbacks to a film where 2 priests end up being eaten alive in the belly of the beast, faces burning with digestive acid, the works.

It’s bound to be that.

piscofrisco · 18/03/2024 21:41

My old house had a tunnel! It once went to the church but it caved in about five meters away from our house. It was bricked up but very loosely so we were able to find it and have a look in it. Loved that house!

Allofaflutter · 18/03/2024 21:44

Not near cliffs is it lol. All I can think is smugglers lol.

JanglingJack · 18/03/2024 21:44

I read a fiction book like this recently. Turned it was old smugglers tunnels with loads of dead bodies in. Huh 🤷

Where abouts was this house? Would be weird if it turned out to be the same house 😂

We don't need to: 18thC is georgian!

piscofrisco · 18/03/2024 21:49

Mine was a bit older than op's. It was built in 1500
