My ds dresses like he’s about to rob a shop on his escooter!

He DOESN’T own a scooter… just looks like he should

I posted this in teens without much response, so apologies for duplicate post.

When will he grow out of this?! AIBU to be a bit disappointed?

He’s 14, all clothes are JD brands mercier, hoodeich, zavetti. His recent purchase is a hip pack 🙄

I’m really not trying to be judgemental, esp to his face!… DH on the other hand just takes the piss, which I wish he wouldn’t do! But I know he’s trying to be someone he’s not… listening to travis scott and drill type shite music. We don’t live in a city or even a large town. No gangs round these parts

I hope it doesn’t stick!

It is absolutely sub conscious bias whereby you associate young black men from inner city areas with crime

Ever heard of the Hatton garden heist. All old white blokes...bet you don't look at the older men in your life wearing a shirt and trousers and accuse them of emulating that look or being about to rob a jewellers?

Why have you brought race in to it?

No it is not. I have a mixed race teenage ds...he lives in tracksuits. He is well behaved and works hard at school...but according to many on here, he must look like he's involved in county lines...

Yes it does matter

but I started the post saying that this is how my son looks… and he’s white. I have brought race in to this at all

Why have you brought race in to it?

Because it's been heavily hinted at from various posters ..Eg pointing out their son is white.

PanadTe · 18/03/2024 16:41

Thanks everyone for your replies! The solidarity has made me feel better 🤣

No need to apologise...I wasn't getting at you specifically...but to be honest this thread has been full of it imo. Ok, no one has actually said, my child dresses like they're a black boy because no one is stupid enough to say that but it's been heavily hinted at....references to Harlem/Brixton/drill music etc. It's subtle but it's there

That wasn’t my intention with the thread.

Is this the look where they don't pull up there trackie bottoms? and show their underpants to the world.

A guy who was old enough to know better was stood up on my bus the other day and first he exposed his underwear and then his arse and didn't seem to realise, couldn't he feel a draft?

Sad that people think this is about race, it really wasn’t how OP put it across?

Why has your 14 year old got an escooter - is he part of a drug distribution network?

Wow your nice aren't you.

Bluegray2 · 18/03/2024 17:39

@NonPlayerCharacter

what the hell are you going on about

therealcookiemonster · 18/03/2024 17:44

@PanadTe I have the perfect solution for you. both you and your DH should buy the exact same outfits and wear then when his friends come around and when you do school runs.

Edited 1 minute after posting.

Well done on winning your race to make the first sarky unhelpful comment in the thread.

BTW your caps lock is broken.

It's not broken I was intentionally using caps

I can't remember saying anything particularly difficult to follow.

We’re coming out the other side of this, OP. Aged 17yrs. I’m sneaking Ralph Lauren polos into his wardrobe every couple of weeks. We bought chinos last weekend for ‘formal’.
The drill-type music is being replaced with happier rap and, strangely but reassuringly, the Doors.

Just roll with it honestly.

My 13 yr old DS went from my blonde, boden-wearing cherub to a spiky-haired football hooligan in a tracksuit overnight!!!

Pick your battles. Is he happy, have friends and loads of exercise??
He will grow out of it...

🤣

Wincher · 18/03/2024 23:02

I thought this was where my year 9 DS was going but about six months ago he suddenly pivoted to the skater look - ridiculously baggy jeans, skater jumpers, random slogan t shirts, beanie hats. He's very into all the stuff DH and I used to listen to 20 years ago like blur, oasis, Radiohead etc! He's gutted we chucked all our CDs as otherwise he could have decorated his room with the liners...

Onceuponatimeiwasahoe · 18/03/2024 23:32

I use to dress like that at 14 he will grow out of it. Ban that drill music though that is poison.
Travis Scott Is OK

Yes Drill is poison the kids in work listen to it. It’s shite and so mysoginistic, violent, full of drugs.

I sat in on a double murder trial in the Old Bailey (all teenagers) where a police officer talked the judge through the lyrics in a drill song. That song had triggered the murders as they'd "disrespected" a rival gang.

Two lives lost and two more spending a long time in prison for a stupid song on YouTube. It's horrific.
