My ds dresses like he’s about to rob a shop on his escooter!

He DOESN’T own a scooter… just looks like he should

I posted this in teens without much response, so apologies for duplicate post.

When will he grow out of this?! AIBU to be a bit disappointed?

He’s 14, all clothes are JD brands mercier, hoodeich, zavetti. His recent purchase is a hip pack 🙄

I’m really not trying to be judgemental, esp to his face!… DH on the other hand just takes the piss, which I wish he wouldn’t do! But I know he’s trying to be someone he’s not… listening to travis scott and drill type shite music. We don’t live in a city or even a large town. No gangs round these parts

I hope it doesn’t stick!

It is absolutely sub conscious bias whereby you associate young black men from inner city areas with crime

Ever heard of the Hatton garden heist. All old white blokes...bet you don't look at the older men in your life wearing a shirt and trousers and accuse them of emulating that look or being about to rob a jewellers?

Am I your friend? Was this my daughter?

I’d think it was mine, except she’s 15. That post did make me roar 😂😂

Could be worse, my friend's 14 year old daughter turned up to lunch last week looking like someone swapped her head for a satsuma with eyelashes.

But of course you smile pleasantly and ask how they've been.

I just choked on my ginger nut biscuit!! 😂

My 17 yr old has a penchant for stupid false lashes. We've named her sad camel, as that's what she looks like with them on.

The only post on this thread that mentions black in the context of race (or any mention of race I think) is yours.

spiderlight · 18/03/2024 12:55

@blue345 - I feel you on the haircuts!! My DS decided a few weeks back that he no loinger wanted our lovely local mobile barber who's known him since primary school to come and cut his hair, and went off into town to try his friend's 'really good' barber instead. I then received two messages - 'The barber didn't speak very much English' and 'It'll look nice in a couple of weeks' - followed by a photo that could genuinely have been mistaken for Sideshow Bob from the Simpsons. It has grown back, but I confess that I nearly cried - I didn't make a big deal of it in front of him, obviously, but he's always had such lovely hair and he looked absolutely ridiculous for a couple of weeks. He's said he's not getting it done again, thankfully!

Nope. There's a post up the thread where a poster describes her child as white and privately educated...so yes, race is very much hinted at on this thread

Comedycook · 18/03/2024 13:01

There's also a post mentioning Brixton...I have no idea why that particular part of London was mentioned over any others....

Mummyoflittledragon · 18/03/2024 13:23

Wagwan G. Multicultural London English Roadman innit. ‘llow it and show your fam some respec. Man’s rollin wif da mandem. Bless.

Wink

I use MLE with my 15 yo dd when she’s being insolent and it’s especially effective in front of her friends. She’s horrified but she’s preppy… and one of the orange face, long eyelash, slug eyebrow brigade. I’m finding this current roadman trend funny actually but maybe I’ve been watching too much Top Boy.

NonPlayerCharacter · 18/03/2024 13:35

I really thought the orange skin and Sharpie eyebrow trend was on the way out. Shows what I know.

EarringsandLipstick · 18/03/2024 13:46

Oh no @Minfilia that's a tough situation 🥺

EarringsandLipstick · 18/03/2024 14:16

but he will be embarrassed by how he dresses

But why? I mean, only in the way we all are when we look back on trends that have dated. The current teen boy look, while not obviously my choice, can look great.

JustEatTheOneInTheBallPit · 18/03/2024 14:22

My 12yo daughter must be so cold all of the time. I feel cold just looking at her. Coats aren’t cool. Covering your midriff isn’t cool. Wearing trousers that aren’t just a thin layer of polyester stretched across your thighs and backside isn’t cool.

Her body fat is about 1%. She sinks like a stone in the pool. I honestly can’t understand why she doesn’t have hyperthermia. But, I’ve stopped bringing it up. That’s another thing that isn’t cool… me enquiring after her health and wellbeing.

BoohooWoohoo · 18/03/2024 14:25

My 17yo dresses like a road man but plans to stop doing it before he reaches age 20. He’s very mild mannered so is fine with me gently teasing him about his fashion choices. His best friend dresses more skater style so they look a bit unusual together.

This is such a weird hill to die on on a lighthearted thread about teenagers dressing stupidly.

No it is not. I have a mixed race teenage ds...he lives in tracksuits. He is well behaved and works hard at school...but according to many on here, he must look like he's involved in county lines...

Yes it does matter

😂😂😂

It's mad crazy bruv. Don't have teen boys but girls and thankfully not hit any enormously awful fake lashes yet but some of their friends do. It takes a lot not to stare and giggle.

To be fair eldest DD bought the most fucking awful brown cord jacket from urban outfitters a year ago. I call it her old man jacket. Looks flipping terrible on her. Ah teens! Gotta love them.

NonPlayerCharacter · 18/03/2024 14:55

I bought a baker boy cap and a flatcap when I was in my late teens. Everyone, including my parents and my friends, said I looked great.

I looked like an absolute fucking tool. I don't know what any of us were seeing!

Bornnotbourne · 18/03/2024 15:00

When my step sister went into a punk phase my step mum enthusiastically joined her. She liked to show up to family meals then get my dad to photograph them saying “matchy, matchy”. She overheard my stepsister booking a nose piercing and book a slot too. She gave up on the phase pretty quickly after that but my step mum kept her piercings!!

Its the new Punk/Emo/Goth thing. Teenagers who live nice houses with nice families pretending they are Roadmen. He will grow out of it in a few years.

Yes it’s a kind of uniform. It goes with the music they like I daresay. Bit like we were New Romantics, Soul girls, punks etc

I have a white step son who lives in tracksuits who is well behaved and works hard in school (or at least pretends to) who according to many on here he must look like he's involved in county lines.

Absolutely no one is saying "my god my son is dressing like he's black this is dreadful". What they are taking the piss out of is a load of teenage boys suddenly dressing like they're roadmen when last year they were running around in a naice jumper and jeans from John Lewis.

Feelinadequate23 · 18/03/2024 15:00

OP, this was my brother. He came from a relatively well-off middle class background and had parents on the church tea committee but dressed and spoke like he was from the "Endz" and robbed people in his spare time. Happy to report that by 18 he was wearing shirts with jeans and even the odd chinos! Hopefully he'll grow out of it...or at least make loads of money being a rapper!

Yes, they do love it when you join in

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 18/03/2024 15:05

@LoopyLooooo Love your description. I used to say to my DD that some of the girls looked like oompah loompas.

middleofthenightmediumsizedtoblerone · 18/03/2024 16:08

Can someone post a picture off the internet as an example.

I have no idea if my teenager is dressing the same.

middleofthenightmediumsizedtoblerone · 18/03/2024 16:11

Mine wears t-shirts, hoodies, joggers but if he's making an effort will wear a designer polo shirt (Ralph Lauren) and jeans. Always trainers. I thought sportswear was fashionable. Him and his Sister go the gym everyday.
