He DOESN’T own a scooter… just looks like he should

I posted this in teens without much response, so apologies for duplicate post.

When will he grow out of this?! AIBU to be a bit disappointed?

He’s 14, all clothes are JD brands mercier, hoodeich, zavetti. His recent purchase is a hip pack 🙄

I’m really not trying to be judgemental, esp to his face!… DH on the other hand just takes the piss, which I wish he wouldn’t do! But I know he’s trying to be someone he’s not… listening to travis scott and drill type shite music. We don’t live in a city or even a large town. No gangs round these parts

I hope it doesn’t stick!

OP posts:
Poppyzo · 18/03/2024 10:45

It’s hard not to judge but I don’t dress the same as I did at 14 so I guess he won’t either.

Fixerupper77 · 18/03/2024 10:45

I think youl find this falls under the category of 'You are now an old fart and do not know what is cool anymore' LOL.

I look at what teens wear now and also want to laugh tbf, those horrid mop top perms, sliders and socks. Urgh. But that is what is fashionable to them.

Like the rest of us, he will get older and look back and be mortified of teen pics when hes older!

Let it go.

Combattingthemoaners · 18/03/2024 10:46

This is definitely the teenage boy “look” at the moment. Referring to everyone as “bro or bruv” or silly phrases like “allow it”. He will grow out of it…..hopefully!

EarringsandLipstick · 18/03/2024 10:49

we’d have been able to point out why a gigantic black cross tattooed to the side of his skull may not have been the wisest life choice.

😱😱😱

Oh gosh. This would really upset me. It's it possible to cover it up? With his hair, hopefully?

Hellocatshome · 17/03/2024 22:52

Its the new Punk/Emo/Goth thing. Teenagers who live nice houses with nice families pretending they are Roadmen. He will grow out of it in a few years.

THIS...@PanadTe I have seen middle class boys dressed like this {I live in a City} but when they open their mouth... Middle class... they were talking of going to a Sushi bar at weekend, presumably with parents.

Don't worry too much...keep all channels or communication open, and DON'T let your husband tease him...that could be really damaging.

therealcookiemonster · 18/03/2024 11:07

PanadTe · 17/03/2024 22:34

Rural Cumbria of all places!! 🙄

The skater look I can get on board with, it’s not an intimidating 1st impression. That’s my worry.

People must just look at him and think he’s a dick.

I know I shouldn't be laughing OP but I am some imagining someone in all their gear strutting down rural roads trying to be all gangsta while the sheep look on....

he will grow out of it and realise how shit that music is and how he looks. he will be embarrassed when you remind him

EarringsandLipstick · 18/03/2024 11:29

I don't agree how teen boys currently dress is 'shit'.

It's a bit perplexing to me, sure - the obsession with brands, the uniformity of style & colour.

But often they look smart, if they want to, hair done, decent gear.

It's just not our choice, which is as it should be!

Minfilia · 18/03/2024 11:31

ten2one · 18/03/2024 10:13

Oh god! Please tell me its under his hairline at least?

Nope.

And of course he has a skin fade to show it off in all its glory. That and a diamond earring.

@EarringsandLipstick its safe to say DH and I weren’t best pleased. I think at one point there was actual steam coming out of my ears.

DoYouAgree · 18/03/2024 11:31

My 15 year old is exactly the same so I try and look at the postures, they wash well, dry quickly, are practical colours and are warm.

GoodAfternoonGoodEveningAndGoodnight · 18/03/2024 11:34

Meh, sounds like a normal teen experimenting with dress sense to me 😁
I'm sure my parents thought some of my outfits were ridiculous when I was a teenager lol

NonPlayerCharacter · 18/03/2024 11:45

Bluegray2 · 18/03/2024 10:31

@NonPlayerCharacter

If it's actually a naice middle class teenager uniform, the people who really are involved in nefarious activities will know not to go near them!

His mother doesn’t seem to think it is and thinks he looks like he should own an e-scooter….

Oh shit, is she involved in nefarious activities then?

This thread is full of middle class mums criticising how their sons dress. Look at yourself....you probably dress like most other middle class mums. All your sons are doing is dressing like boys their own age.

And you complain about other comments being "classist" 😂😂

Oh my god, so sad! no it's a light hearted thread about how teenagers dress and very interesting actually so you are the one to get off your big horses

PanadTe · 17/03/2024 22:26

This is my point though… he looks like he could be!

I was listening to the bloke that wrote the chimp paradox, he talked about how normal it was to want to fit in as a teenager whether that’s clothes, bags etc. The more practical challenge is I find that one can’t tell which teenager is likely to mug you as they all look like scrotes!

it’s also as a teenager very hard to plough your own furrow, look at the children who get murdered for being different. Sophie Lancaster being an example.

So? He's a teenager. I wore badly applied black lipstick and at one point, and I cringe even typing this, a corset type thing with a massive lace ruff. I subjected the household to loud, long listens to My Dying Bride who I didn't actually like very much but the boy I fancied did.

I think worrying that he might not grow out of wearing tracksuit bottoms(?!) is a lovely luxury. 😀

SoupDragon · 18/03/2024 11:50

It is classist. Apparently wearing a tracksuit and trainers is synonymous with drugs.... well in that case so is a business suit because the city of full of hooray Henry's on a Friday night snorting line after line of coke after a long day at work.

Its not just tracksuits and trainers it is specific tracksuits and specific trainers.

Also the people who deliver the drugs (Roadmen) are very different to the people who buy the drugs. Its 40 plus year old business men who keep the drug trade in money but its not them cycling around delivering the drugs with a burner phone in their man bag.

Anyway it has always been the way that young people will follow the crowd and the crowd are heavily influenced by sub cultures as no 14 year old wants to dress like a small version of their middle aged parents.

Yes but the middle class parents will be dressing like their peers too. Seems awfully hypocritical to criticise their teens when they do exactly the same.

And you literally just proved my point. If a teenager was wearing a suit you wouldn't criticise him for dressing like a drug taking bloke who works in the city. It wouldn't even cross your mind.

Only4nomore · 18/03/2024 12:23

Sorry OP but I literally just Laughed out Loud when I read this because it is MY SON 🤣 I totally get where you are coming from all in black even the trainers and all his mates are matching exactly the same brands as you have posted. I'm afraid though I take the same route as your partner I just take the piss. When I see them walking down the street together like little gangsters it makes me giggle as none of them are bloody gangsters. We live in a tiny town and I really think its just a phase. They aren't bad kids at all. This too shall pass as they say 🤣

Echobelly · 18/03/2024 12:25

That's just what boys that age look like generally - lots of dull grey, navy and beige sportswear. I wouldn't assume any boy so dressed is a crook, it's just the style.

LadyRoughDiamond · 18/03/2024 12:30

AnnaKing81 · 17/03/2024 22:42

Just roll with it honestly.

My 13 yr old DS went from my blonde, boden-wearing cherub to a spiky-haired football hooligan in a tracksuit overnight!!!

Pick your battles. Is he happy, have friends and loads of exercise??
He will grow out of it...

Same! My 13 year old has gone from a colourful, smiley Boden-clad boy to aspiring road man. The suggestion that he may want to wear something other than tracksuit bottoms is met with much derision.

That said, at his recent birthday sleepover I was reassured that his friends were actually sweethearts underneath the layers of JD Sport gear.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 18/03/2024 12:32

Pick your battles. If his dress sense is the biggest challenge of his teenage years, you'll be doing well!
