To HATE my dog

We have a 7 year old pug who literally drives me nuts, he comes upstairs whilst we are out pisses on the banister. I am so sick of cleaning/re-painting. We have quite a big garden and all he does is chase passers by barking constantly. I know a dog is for life and everything but since having kids I really do not have the time and every time I look at him he just annoys me. It is really unfair to him as he could be with a family who love him, dont get me wrong, the kids LOVE him so I could not get rid but he just really gets on my nerves. I used to love dogs, we got a cat a year or so ago and he is amazing!

You wouldn't be saying that if you'd got an entire Tom spraying piss up every wall, corner and your kids' beds.

Or maybe that's what the dog is trying to cover up? Stench of unneutered cat?

Parents had a Burmese cat ( male) who was neutered, but that cat ( whom they loved dearly) was a shocker for peeing indoors.

he had a clean litter tray , but would get upset I’d other cats came in, ( via open windows/ cat flap) and he’d scent mark.

My bros and I used to call him “ Piss artist”
It was horrible, the sharp smell when he peed, and the oily residue it left.

He was a lovely boy apart from this.

Burmese males are so say prone to this- even neutered ones who were neutered at an early age.

And you do not have to resurrect a zombie thread but here we are.

You don’t have to like him but you do have to show him appropriate care.

Speak to your vet about having him neutered. It should have been done a long time ago really. It might be too late now - pugs don’t do well with anaesthetic and his age won’t help - but you can see what your vet thinks. At the same time get him checked for any bladder or urinary tract issues in case there is a medical explanation.

If you rule out medical issues then you know it’s behavioural. It may be that he is territory marking, especially as you introduced a cat to the household. Try revisiting the same steps you used to housetrain him originally - hugely increase the number of potty breaks and offer lots of praise and rewards when he goes outside. At the same time reduce his access to the place where he is peeing by adding a stair gate. Use an enzyme cleaner to clean the area and remove the smell of urine even for him, and add a puppy pad there so that if he does manage to access it the smell of urine doesn’t soak in.

I did train him by the way. He knows to go outside to do his business, its just the leaving his scent that is driving me mad. He is great off the lead etc and very sociable and extremely friendly. everybody comments on how much of a good dog he is.

Well there we are

This is all down to you not doing research/talking to the Vet and putting in place basic steps to help your dog

Instead , you decide to hate the dog

Jesus 🙄

Neutered males and female cats also spray.

Most shelters are overrun at the moment as the number of people abandoning dogs increases and the number looking to adopt has fallen due to cost of living. It is very unlikely that at this age the dog will quickly find a new home that will love and cherish him. Poor thing is likely to be stuck in kennels.

I really hate the word “rehome” it suggests that there are dozens of lovely new families ready and waiting to take on these poor dogs, whereas the reality it most get stuck for months in kennels.

A pug would be snapped up.

Rubytuesday77 · 01/12/2024 12:38

Some male dogs are very hard to train regarding cocking their leg up. It’s all about wanting to leave their scent…often only a few drops but it stinks. That’s why I would only ever have a bitch. Sorry I can’t offer much advice but I’d definitely get a stair gate.

SickOfTheUK · 08/12/2024 20:53

lol at all the dog people on here who hate cats. Very common here in the UK to hate cats. My dog is an absolute bloody nightmare piss everywhere and she shits anywhere she wants to despite having tried every aspect of training (very expensive too) my beautiful neuter ginger cat is a delight. He’s loving and affectionate and uses the litter box every time never shits anywhere he shouldn’t. Why do so many people here hate cats yet love dogs? Dogs smell, have dirty habits and mess up your house! Cats are a lot cleaner.

Don't listen to any ignorant nasty responses and the constant pressing to get your dog neutered because in my opinion that's a bigger decision than people make it. I had one dog it completely ruined. Here's my solution... I bought the wraps that wrap around the dog and covers his weenie and you can also buy these little pads that go inside of it and when he pees I throw the pad away and put a new one on and wrap it right back around him. I would never neuter another dog or spay them unless absolutely necessary. And all the talk about they have a higher rate of this and that and this and that there's always a risk both ways. And I want my dogs to be happy and to keep everything that they were put on this Earth with if at all possible. Try those wraps also known as belly bands. You can find them right on amazon.
