To HATE my dog

Blossomo · 04/03/2024 16:11

We have a 7 year old pug who literally drives me nuts, he comes upstairs whilst we are out pisses on the banister. I am so sick of cleaning/re-painting. We have quite a big garden and all he does is chase passers by barking constantly. I know a dog is for life and everything but since having kids I really do not have the time and every time I look at him he just annoys me. It is really unfair to him as he could be with a family who love him, dont get me wrong, the kids LOVE him so I could not get rid but he just really gets on my nerves. I used to love dogs, we got a cat a year or so ago and he is amazing!

the dog needs structure and training - if you are not prepared to do this its probably best to rehome -

toomuchfaff · 04/03/2024 19:07

You can buy little dog "nappies" for use when dogs in season and such, wondering if there is one that caters for male dogs for this issue.

My dog would had the most fun shredding rhem up, eating them and then pooing the bits out 🤣

marthawashington · 04/03/2024 19:12

My pug just turned 16 and is still going strong. You might have a long road ahead...

DiscoBeat · 04/03/2024 19:12

Get a stair gate and get him a chemical castration jab. He's probably marking. Also a longer walk might help get some of the energy down.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 04/03/2024 17:56

Lol. This is nonsense. Vets don't recommend routine neutering for male dogs any more, and I am following my own vets advice.

LOL as much as you like.

I fundamentally disagree with you.

Dmsatdawn · 04/03/2024 19:21

@LaurieFairyCake I couldn’t agree more. My pug is 9, nuts chopped off early doors, and he is the most benign loving, laid back dog to every man woman or dog/cat he comes into contact with. Never soils indoors. But don’t mention toenail cutting it’s nigh on impossible (seem to hate their feet touched) unless you are prepared to undertake a vice-like grip and do a couple at a time which is quite traumatic. Anal glands? …yeah if I can catch him first. Would I be without him? No never.

I wish there was some sort of exam ppl had to sit before being allowed to take innocent animals home

and also parenthood should be restricted via arigorous process of application, interviews and examination

👏👏👏

You can fundamentally disagree with the PP all you like, I fundamentally disagree with unnecessary surgery. Not all dogs will benefit at all from being neutered; it’s not something I’d do unless medically necessary.

In this case is may be necessary although it sounds more like a poor neglected and stressed dog who needs more input and attention than he’s getting.

LuckySantangelo35 · 04/03/2024 19:55

To all those saying op needs to train the dog… SHE HAS!! He never used to do it.

I'm really interested in this point as all the rescues and vets I've ever know stongly support neutering. Battersea Dogs Home certainly seem very pro neutering.

Are there any vets out there who could give us some facts please?

But surely if everyone did this there would be unwanted pregnancies everywhere and even more dogs in rescue centres or destroyed.

But the thing is, training isn't "one and done." It's an ongoing process. If a new behaviour arises, it's up to the owner to work out the root cause and respond accordingly. Is it a training issue? A health issue? An emotional issue? In this case, the OP says she has no time for the dog, she now has children and a cat, she hates the dog -- all possible reasons the dog is marking when previously he didn't. So she does need to look into all potential reasons for the behaviour, including (though not limited to) training.

Posts like this really upset me. I have a challenging dog (rescue) but I wouldn’t change her for the world.

AliceAforethought · 04/03/2024 20:07

SomersetTart · 04/03/2024 18:21

Did you read the OPs comments?

"I know a dog is for life and everything but since having kids I really do not have the time "
"every time I look at him he just annoys me."
"It is really unfair to him as he could be with a family who love him
"he just really gets on my nerves"
"I really do not like him"
OP says in the title that she hates the dog.

As a do lover it's pretty hard to read that stuff and not be angry. Also, PP have been giving advice. Tons of advice, all of which is in the public domain and the OP could have researched for herself via the net or at her vet.

Yes, I have read the OP and yes, I'm a dog lover too Hmm
Which is why I think this little doggo would be better benefitted by his owner being advised and supported rather than abused. She may then be able to take something from this thread, and improve things for her dog. This may lead to a better relationship with her dog which would be good for both of them.
Abusing people achieves nothing and won't help the dog.

Dogs can’t get pregnant.

If I had a bitch I’d have her neutered because there are proven medical and social reasons to do so.

SomersetTart · 04/03/2024 20:12

@AliceAforethought There are literally dozens, if not hundreds, of posts on here where people are offering really useful advice. This is an opinion forum and the OP posted on AIBU rather than The Dog House thread. Nothing we can say can influence the relationship between an owner and the dog she says she hates........she has to take responsibility for that.

He is only doing it while you are out, and you are annoyed about the place he is doing it.

are you able to get a baby gate to keep him contained in the kitchen or another room that has tile or other hard floors so that are easily cleaned and not such a big deal if he does go to the loo indoors?

Collywobblewobbles · 04/03/2024 20:16

When did he start urinating inside?

Did it coincide with having a child? Or with getting your cat?

Like it or not you have a responsibility for his health & wellbeing. You also have a responsibility for your own. Both can be immeasurably improved by making your dog a priority once again and taking steps to correct his behaviour.

Re the urinating indoors - first step is the vets, as it should always be when an animals toileting habits change.

The vet will check for medical issues and advise some basic behavioural training. If no medical cause can be found, and neutering doesn't help, then it's likely to be stress. In which case, the poor thing really does need some care & attention from you.

A baby gate will block him from upstairs in the meantime.

Re. The barking: this sounds like boredom, stress or both.

What breed is he?
How often is he walked?
What attention is he given apart from walks and feeding, is he played with?

He might need more mental stimulation.

There are several things you can do before embarking on the road of hiring behaviourists but they all require some care from you (and presumably your partner).

AliceAforethought · 04/03/2024 20:18

@SomersetTart yes there has been plenty of good advice, and loads more is available in other places.
My simple point was that there was no need for some posters to be so abusive. It won't help.

But, as you rightfully pointed out, this is AIBU, so I suppose a walloping is par for the course.

There are proven medical and social reasons to have dogs neutered too.

https://www.battersea.org.uk/pet-advice/dog-care-advice/dog-neutering

“Neutered male dogs are at a lower risk of testicular tumours”

I should think they are, because they won’t have testicles.

Many dogs, all of mine and all of my families dogs, ever, have lived quite happy, fulfilling and well behaved lives with their testes intact. What benefit could there possibly have been to any of them having unnecessary surgery? None. Some dogs may benefit from neutering, some won’t. If a person doesn’t feel their dogs need it then that’s fine.

Battersea are going to be biased in their differing opinion.

And yet another 'but since I've had kids..' complaint. It's so predictable on here. The dog (also a member of the family) gets pushed out, is disliked, is not wanted...blah blah blah.
I've seen first hand the devastating effect it has on the poor dog that is cast aside for the baby.

WE had 'friends' who had to terriers who were so loved, and substitude chidren. Then in mid 30s she did get pregnant, and things changed. Then she expected the second and couldn't cope, and they said 'ah well, we've outgrown the dogs' and almost forced good friends to adopt them. People do this, again and again. And yes, I do hate them, not the dogs.
