To HATE my dog

We have a 7 year old pug who literally drives me nuts, he comes upstairs whilst we are out pisses on the banister. I am so sick of cleaning/re-painting. We have quite a big garden and all he does is chase passers by barking constantly. I know a dog is for life and everything but since having kids I really do not have the time and every time I look at him he just annoys me. It is really unfair to him as he could be with a family who love him, dont get me wrong, the kids LOVE him so I could not get rid but he just really gets on my nerves. I used to love dogs, we got a cat a year or so ago and he is amazing!

Did you do any research at all before getting a dog? Given that you've chosen a dog with bred in deformities and one of the shortest life spans in the canine world as a result, I'm going to assume not much.

SlashBeef · 04/03/2024 16:37

Why didn't you get him neutered anyway??
Clean the wee area thoroughly and then put a stair gate up to stop him going back to the same spot.
You also need to retrain some of his behaviours. You can make the time for him if you prioritise it for a while. We have a dog and 4 kids. Everyone is (relatively) well trained, at least enough to be civilised!

Training is key and it sounds like he’s never been trained. Poor dog, you’ve let him down and are now moaning about him? Rehome him to someone who’ll love and cherish him, it really annoys me when people get dogs then whine about them when children come along.

Edited

Most shelters are overrun at the moment as the number of people abandoning dogs increases and the number looking to adopt has fallen due to cost of living. It is very unlikely that at this age the dog will quickly find a new home that will love and cherish him. Poor thing is likely to be stuck in kennels.

I really hate the word “rehome” it suggests that there are dozens of lovely new families ready and waiting to take on these poor dogs, whereas the reality it most get stuck for months in kennels.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 04/03/2024 16:41

Not really the point of the thread I suppose, but I'm slightly wondering how he pisses on the banister.

K0OLA1D · 04/03/2024 16:45

Honestly OP get him neutered. Get a stair gate or close off that part of the house when you are out. Does he do it when you're in?

My cat is 16. We accidently locked him in the extension on Saturday and he's now taken to pissing in the palm tree pot!

YANBU.

Dogs are filthy and annoying.

TheBraves · 04/03/2024 16:50

This can’t be real.

Blossomo · 04/03/2024 16:50

I did train him by the way. He knows to go outside to do his business, its just the leaving his scent that is driving me mad. He is great off the lead etc and very sociable and extremely friendly. everybody comments on how much of a good dog he is.

OK. You don't like dogs. Your unhelpful comment doesn't address how the owner could fulfil her responsibilities.

Notinthemood12 · 04/03/2024 16:54

Everyone comments how much of a lovely dog he is but yet he’s stuck with you. 🤮 should be ashamed. I would say rehome but you sound like the type to rehome through Gumtree. Can someone responsible help you to rehome?

He is a lovely dog because of me!

So presumably you don't have one ? If you brought dog into your home (as OP ha done) and then complained it was filthy and annoying, YWBU don't you think ?

The dog is marking his territory - you bought a cat into his house.

So why do you hate the poor thing then?

StressDoesNotAgreeWithMe · 04/03/2024 16:59

I get it, my dog went through a phase of going in the house. It really affected the way I felt about him. He used to have free roam in the house which was part of the problem as now he has restricted access he has completely stopped ( unless by chance he gets in one of the kids rooms unnoticed ect he will make a mess )

I bought a giant crate, its huge, could fit 2 or 3 of him in there. A really comfy bed and now if he cant be in the same room as me ( bedtime, if I pop out, I'm at home all day everyday ) then he goes in his crate. He does not have accidents in his crate. I also have a baby gate at the bottom.of the stairs

Well we know you bought a dog of a difficult breed, didn’t get him neutered, didn’t understand the consequences of not getting him neutered, haven’t addressed his behaviours which are signs of stress, and say you hate him. So you certainly have told us quite a bit about yourself.

You could address his behaviour by working on it with the help of a behaviourist. But that isn’t looking promising if you hate him. He knows your attitude to him has changed.

FOJN · 04/03/2024 17:00

Why didn't you neuter when your dog was younger? You could do it now but it may not change behaviour that is already established.

You could also hand him into a rescue but a 7 year old pug may not be rehomed easily, especially one with a behavioural problem. Approx 20,000 dogs a year are put to sleep in rehoming centres in the UK.

I'm afraid you have badly let your dog down and I do not think you should ever get another pet without doing a lot of research first.

Sorry but negligent or lazy dogs owners make me angry.

Whereabouts in the country do you live ?

Please rehome him, either thru Pug rescue or Many Tears in Wales - there are plenty of people ( little old ladies :) who would love to adopt your pug - esp as he is used to being an only dog ( only dogs from homes are very sought after by people looking to adopt )

takemeawayagain · 04/03/2024 17:05

You can't just leave the dog in the garden because it's getting on your nerves, of course it's going to protect it's turf and chase off the passers by. It needs to be taken for a walk a couple of times a day not just left to amuse itself in the garden. Dogs are pack animals and it would rather be with you in the house then just left in the garden.
You need to rehome him though as you clearly don't like him, he deserves an owner that has the time for him and loves him. Buying a gate and getting him neutered are unlikely to completely change your opinion of him because he will still need your time and attention.

Please, walking and feeding a dog is not a reason to pat yourself in the back, it's the bare minimum you should be doing.

You did not investigate the pro and cons of neutering otherwise you would have understood your dog's behaviour and now he has a problem, that you are responsible for causing, you hate him.

You have let him down but don't realise it just because you walk and feed him. Letting him down is negligent.
