Husband hates taking his shoes off inside

… that’s it, really.

We live in a city centre, and when we walk outside, we frequently see dog poo on the pavements, and occasionally vermin.

However, I apparently am a massive nag because I want him to take his outdoor shoes* off when inside our flat or other people’s homes.

*I even bought him really nice slippers, as I know he doesn’t like the feeling of walking barefoot through the flat. He puts them on most of the time but still complains that I am being difficult.

It may not surprise you to learn I am the person who does almost all of the cleaning.

Can anyone else relate to this situation or AIBU?

Shoes inside is an abomination

notthefrontdoor · 01/03/2024 23:15

Never take mine off inside- I hate slippers except before bed and in the morning

Containerhome · 01/03/2024 23:17

My feet would hurt if I wore shoes from am to pm. Plus I think it brings lots of unwanted mess/germs in the house.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 01/03/2024 23:18

I have having to take my shoes off in someone's house. I have plantar facilitis so sleepers are a no go too.

Is it not his house too?

Dotty2dot · 01/03/2024 23:19

I'm sure lots of people will relate to this situation. I mean it's not like it's been done to death on MN before.

Badnewsonthedoorstep · 01/03/2024 23:20

Each to their own but I’m with your husband op.
We live in an old house with hard cold uneven floors for which you need proper footwear. In over 25 years of family life, none of us have become seriously ill, probably because we don’t tend to lick the parquet.

midgetastic · 01/03/2024 23:20

I can see that slippers aren't the same as shoes - but indoor shoes should be ok
Hygiene !

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 01/03/2024 23:21

Maybe you need to find a happy medium - I have flat feet so have to wear shoes inside or I’m in pain but I got really good Skechers arch fit slips ons for home. Has he said why he prefers shoes on?

And if you can’t reach a medium then he has to start doing more cleaning 😊😊

Wanker

PaminaMozart · 01/03/2024 23:23

Wearing outdoor shoes indoors is gross.
Wear slippers, indoors shoes, thick socks....... whatever.
But not outdoor shoes...

Snugglemonkey · 01/03/2024 23:24

Indoor shoes are the answer.

ThePriceIsWright · 01/03/2024 23:25

I would hate this! Is your house carpeted or tiles / laminate etc?

We have tiles and laminate in kitchen / diner but carpet in hall and stairs and while I let go shoes in kitchen, shoes on carpet would piss me off

PattySpringsteen · 01/03/2024 23:26

We have a stone floor in the kitchen and come in with boots on. I never understand the drama about boots/shoes inside, but this is MN, it’s a different world to ours a lot of the time. We don’t live in the city, we live on a farm and there’s shite everywhere as well as some vermin.

DeeCeeCherry · 01/03/2024 23:26

No shoes allowed in my home. I don't want dirty shoes on my hallway carpet/floors. I have a box of plastic shoe covers near front door, and on upstairs landing. Theyre cheap on Amazon. Anyone fussed can put those on, problem solved. I can't understand people who want to clump around in shoes indoors instead of socks or slippers, I imagine they just can't unwind and relax in their own home. I can't wait to kick my shoes off and chill when I get indoors.

SoOutingWhoCares · 01/03/2024 23:26

I hate slippers/socks. We have hardwood floors that get sanitised daily.

Can’t you at least allow him to wear “proper” indoor only shoes?

I hate being invited to friends house parties in no shoe houses and walking around like an idiot in a lovely outfit and either tights where I feel I’m about to fall on their laminate/tiles or some random slippers they’ve found and given me so I’ve bought some nice indoor only pumps, show them the soles so they can see they’ve never been worn outside and more often than not they’re ok with me wearing shoes.

Also…you can clean shoes you know?

Aquamarine1029 · 01/03/2024 23:28

Would he be happier with actual shoes/trainers for his indoor footwear?

Talipesmum · 01/03/2024 23:28

You’re not being unreasonable but I can definitely relate to your husband. I generally prefer to keep my shoes on, I feel a little undressed without them, they keep my feet warm and comfy (I don’t do uncomfortable shoes). I find it really annoying having to take them off and on to go in and out the house, and while it’s ok if there’s carpet I hate being in just socks on a hard floor. Slippers are much warmer than shoes and they try to swallow up my socks.
It’s not so bad in the winter cos warm slippers are cosy, and I’ve always got socks on. But in the summer slippers are too hot and I might have bare feet in the shoes and my feet are awful. So it’s just uncomfortable.

I do agree it’s more hygienic to take them off when we come in - but I don’t actually think it matters that much. No crawling toddlers on the floor licking the carpet. We wipe our feet. I just can’t get that worried about it - I don’t think a slightly dustier than normal carpet or floor is going to kill off the human race.

mollyfolk · 01/03/2024 23:29

Maybe he could buy indoor shoes. I became a shoes off house when the kids were crawlers - they were licking the floors. I was also most concerned about dog poo as we live in an urban area. Husband was reluctant but eventually fell in love with a pair of slippers I bought him.

maybe show him studies like this that took samples from pavements that didn’t have visible dog poo and found lots of poo!

RampantIvy · 01/03/2024 23:32

Why doesn't he wear indoor shoes instead of slippers then?

I can't wait to kick my shoes off when I get in.

Allofaflutter · 01/03/2024 23:35

Yuk outdoor shoes inside.

p1ppyL0ngstocking · 01/03/2024 23:36

He has a choice; he can hoover and mop daily, and shampoo the carpet where necessary, or he can take his shoes off.

The problem comes when he wants to be able to bring mud and dog faeces etc into the house and expects you to clear it up after him.

If he tidies his own mess, he can wear what he likes, if he expects you to be the cleaner then he has to obey the cleaner's rules. He can't have it both ways 🤷‍♀️ though quite frankly he should be doing 50% of the housework anyway and I imagine that if he did, he'd be wanting people to take their shoes off as well 🙄

hardknocklifeforme · 01/03/2024 23:39

I am the least fussy person ever! But outdoor shoes inside is just wrong!

teenagetantrums · 01/03/2024 23:47

I don't wear shoes inside, because l can't wait to take them off when l get home. Dosent bother me if guest want to. I'm not going to lick the carpet, it gets vacuumed and cleaned every few months. Be different if l had a crawling baby l suppose.

AndThatWasNY · 01/03/2024 23:49

I come from an Eastern European background and the idea of people walking around inside the house with shoes on is vile. I just don't get it.
