My brother is a chef and he goes bonkers of anyone puts a bag on the kitchen surface for hygiene reasons.

They’re food preparation surfaces.
Nobody eats directly off the restaurant table.

Google says it is extremely bad manners to put your handbag on the table in a restaurant. Just something I thought most people would know. Basic etiquette

Confused
Babla · 02/03/2024 00:41

dinner I'll be using one of my Strathberry Multrees, a Mulberry Lily or a Jimmy Choo clutch

Oooooo get you

HollyKnight · 02/03/2024 00:50

Oh is this another "I'm so middle class" thread? Only filthy commoners put their purses on the table.

Depends on where am. If its a very formal dinner I'll be using one of my Strathberry Multrees, a Mulberry Lily or a Jimmy Choo clutch which have never been anywhere except hanging off my shoulder or on my lap so they go on the table in front of me above the wine glasses - they are all tiny so not a problem. If its a more informal meal then 'll put my bag on a spare chair next to me - they never go on the floor anywhere including at home. When I walk through the front door they go on the hall table to be taken upstairs and put back in their dustbags in the cupboard unless its the Pliage I use for the gym which hangs on the bottom of the banisters. I have never put any of my handbags on the floor. I do have a number of cotton totes which use for buying groceries etc which might get put on the floor but when I empty them they go straight in the laundry room for a wash.

What possible relevance is any of that boast fest 😆
Cringeworthy.

Purses in the handbags on the table

Can they even find any room on the table for their bag, if their feet are already up on there?!

I must admit that I read it in Alan Partridge's voice!

pictoosh · 02/03/2024 07:26

Boasting AND competitive hygiene. It's the post that has it all. Heh.

Homesweethome23 · 02/03/2024 07:53

I have never in my life put my bag on a toilet floor. That also goes for shopping bags. Always on the hook provided or if shopping with someone they hold them for me.

FitAt50 · 02/03/2024 07:58

My bug bear is people using capital letters in the middle of sentences and not managing to write a 3 word statement correctly. How does one put a "Bag in table"?

WandaWonder · 02/03/2024 08:03

Goldx2 · 01/03/2024 20:36

Nice try

Ireolu · 02/03/2024 08:06

I am one of the filth that put my bags on the table. My bags r expensive and heavy. Not leaving it strapped to chair or on a spare chair nearby or on the floor or on my shoulder or on my lap I want to enjoy my meal. If we r sat on a bench it's between me and DD. If individual chairs it's close to me on the edge of the table logo facing the wall. Send the police! People I have meals with don't give a crap and nor do I.

LakieLady · 02/03/2024 08:12

I put mine on the table, or next to me if it's bench type seating.

But I don't eat in places where tables aren't cleaned when vacated, or put my bag on toilet floors.

Floofydawg · 02/03/2024 08:25

My bags don't go on the floor, ever! They were very expensive. And if you're not sitting at my table, why would you even care?

betterangels · 02/03/2024 09:11

Goldx2 · 01/03/2024 20:36

You're the rude one. If this offends you, you should be able to explain why that is.

Ponoka7 · 02/03/2024 09:16

Goldx2 · 01/03/2024 21:01

Not at all. People put their handbags on the floor in toilets then put them on the dining table. Eew

The same people who put their bags on the table, will hang them on the hook behind the door. I won't follow an etiquette that is out of date. Too much crime etc around today.

dudsville · 02/03/2024 09:24

Although i appreciate etiquette, good manners, etc., i also have the possibly weird belief that they form part of a membership to an exclusive club. It's like saying what kind of parents, education, etc., you had by hiw you behave at the table. Your level of anger about a topic like this is what's getting so much attention. For some people being critical of others helps them feel a little bit better about themselves, but it isn't sustainable accountability because it's just ranting into the void rather than addressing aspects of one's own character.

SausageRoll58 · 02/03/2024 09:45

I've got a big fake fur red and black monster of a handbag so it definitely goes on the floor between my feet but if it's just a little clutch purse type of thing I'd keep it on the table, or if I'm sat next to a wall and there's a ledge then I'll put it on there instead.

lambhotpot · 02/03/2024 10:17

If its not on your table why would it bother you.
If its not your bag why let it bother you.
Some people just get offended over anything in to days world.

Anyotherdude · 02/03/2024 10:28

I think there was a study that showed how many germs are on the average handbag - however, the same germs are also present on mobile phones, so, OP, do you also object to phones on the table?

Justfinking · 02/03/2024 10:38

I think it's disgusting given they're always on the floor, even on public toilets 🤮

TadpolesInPool · 02/03/2024 10:43

In some cultures putting your bag on the floor brings you financial bad luck.

Tumbleweed101 · 02/03/2024 10:51

I tend to hang mine on my chair under my coat on on the empty chair next to me rather than on the floor or table. I have a bag with a long strap though rather than a clutch bag. I probably wouldn't give it much thought unless the bag was in the way of plates etc on a table.

Angrymum22 · 02/03/2024 10:51

It’s far easier to steal a handbag while it’s sitting on the table. Unless you have the strap wrapped around your wrist which is a little impractical.
I don’t have a handbag small enough to place neatly by my plate so always put my handbag between my feet. Any thief would have to scrabble around under the table to pinch it.
