AIBU to be really wound up at women putting their handbags on tables in the restaurant?

it’s a real bug bear of mine. I find It extremely rude

YANBU! It's also a massive bug bear of mine. It creates an unnecessary separating barrier between you and your company, it's dirty, and it's akin to eating with your elbows on the table. I also hate phones being placed on the table. Put the damn thing away.

Put it on your lap or on the floor (between your feet if you're nervous of it being stolen).

I’ve had my bag stolen twice in restaurants, once it was between my feet and the thief took it from behind my chair whilst I was ordering (saw it later on cctv) and distracted.

Yeah, it’s a bit skanky but not unjustified.

TeenLifeMum · 01/03/2024 22:19

little clutch bags are fine on a table. I hate “posh” nonsense etiquette rules. My Kate spade clutch never goes in the floor (toilet or other) but thankfully I’m not posh enough to give a shit about these rules.

BarrelOfOtters · 01/03/2024 22:20

In Japan they have special baskets on the floor to put your bag in and get quite. Upset if you don’t….you’d like it OP

ALongHardWinter · 01/03/2024 22:29

Urgh I'd NEVER put my handbag on the floor in a public toilet!

RawBloomers · 01/03/2024 22:32

It’s very rude to crowd people out with your belongings, whether that’s a bag, phone, bicycle helmet or even the 4 different cocktails you’ve ordered but haven’t finished.

If there’s plenty of room and you’ve pushed it to the side then it wouldn’t register, but if you’re making it difficult for everyone else, then it’s obviously rude. Also, rude if it’s stood up rather than laid flat and so acts as a barrier or intrudes on companion’s line of sight.

Februaryismyfavourite · 01/03/2024 22:51

Maybe just try the places that provide a stool for your bag. Solves the issue for me.

penjil · 01/03/2024 22:55

Clutch bags are OK, but anything bigger, nope.

Bags on tables are a no from me.
On the floor, between your feet is best, or off the back of the chair.

Obviously this wasn't a problem before thievery became commonplace.

No they don’t. No chance I’d put my bag on any floor. Ugh. You can with your 5 quid shit bag but no chance mine is.

You can make up your own rules and call it ‘etiquette’, but don’t expect anyone else to do what you say.

I was taught to put my handbag, clutch or otherwise, behind me in my seat and sit up straight.

IloveAslan · 01/03/2024 22:58

I don't put my bag on tables, but couldn't care less if anyone else does. Non event and hardly worthy getting "wound up" over.

ChimneySweepLiverpool · 01/03/2024 23:06

It wouldn't bother me at all. I'm not even sure I would take note of it.

We all have our own personal annoyances though

alaskaperry · 01/03/2024 23:08

Life is too short to worry about it

bananasaredelicious · 01/03/2024 23:11

I would never put my bag on the floor in the toilet! It goes on the hook, or anywhere else it can go.. anywhere, never the floor.

On the floor in a restaurant is really not ideal from a security point of view, nor is the back of a chair. I usually hook mine around my knee, or put it behind me or beside me depending on the type of chair and size of bag. My handbags have never touched a floor...

whyamiawakestillitssolate · 01/03/2024 23:15

I wouldn’t put my handbag on the table (nor would I put phone or purse etc on the table in general). I love restaurants with little bag stools or hooks but otherwise it goes on spare chair or floor if big and behind me / on lap if small. I have no idea why on the table seems rude but I agree that it does.

Divebar2021 · 01/03/2024 23:17

I’m more bothered by dogs on train seats.

burnoutbabe · 01/03/2024 23:21

In Japan they have a little box which has fabric in that you put under your chair and put your handbag in. It's very sweet!

Femme2804 · 01/03/2024 23:27

I think you are the one who rude to ask people to google it 🤣🤣🤣. Maybe you just a bitter person. Idk.

i have handbag holder but sometime i forget to bring it so i put my handbag on the table. But its depends on the price of the handbag. I wont put my chanel on the floor but i dont mind to put it on the floor if its not too expensive

Femme2804 · 01/03/2024 23:32

I am bit shocked to read this. Is people really put their bag in the toilet floor? I would never do that. I never put my bag on the toilet floor or shopping trolley. Some of my bags even never rained on.

HoneyWogan · 01/03/2024 23:33

If you don't have your bag on the table, how on earth do you scoop up all the best bits for later into the tupperware box hidden inside it, without anybody else noticing?

If your bag has to go down on the floor, are you supposed to just take a fishing catapult with you and make sure you have the aim and precision of Eric Bristow?!

Runnerduck34 · 01/03/2024 23:35

I don't like bags on tables in restaurants whilst I'm eating. I put mine in the floor or the strap over back of chair.
I do think it's rude unless its a very small clutch bag.
I dont tend to see bags on tables when I'm out but I have seen women ask for a chair for their bag.
I do think it's a bit OTT.
I guess it depends how expensive the bag is but it sounds like a bit of a faff if it's so expensive your worried about putting it down.

Blinky21 · 01/03/2024 23:45

My bags don't go on toilet floors and mainly get put over the back of a chair when I'm out to eat. I think other humans bring more germs to a table than a bag

The people who put their bags on the table rather than the floor won't be dumping them on toilet floors!

No. I guarantee this isn’t the same category of people. The two don’t overlap.

A person who puts their bag on the floor in the toilet (yuck) would do the same in a restaurant. They obviously don’t mind a floor.

A person who dislikes the idea of a restaurant floor enough to keep their bag on the table wouldn’t dream of putting it on the floor of a public toilet. That’s horrifying. There are hooks on the back of the door.

londonmummy1966 · 02/03/2024 00:08

Depends on where am. If its a very formal dinner I'll be using one of my Strathberry Multrees, a Mulberry Lily or a Jimmy Choo clutch which have never been anywhere except hanging off my shoulder or on my lap so they go on the table in front of me above the wine glasses - they are all tiny so not a problem. If its a more informal meal then 'll put my bag on a spare chair next to me - they never go on the floor anywhere including at home. When I walk through the front door they go on the hall table to be taken upstairs and put back in their dustbags in the cupboard unless its the Pliage I use for the gym which hangs on the bottom of the banisters. I have never put any of my handbags on the floor. I do have a number of cotton totes which use for buying groceries etc which might get put on the floor but when I empty them they go straight in the laundry room for a wash.

My brother is a chef and he goes bonkers of anyone puts a bag on the kitchen surface for hygiene reasons.

@IcelandicBerry well yes, on a food preparation surface. But people aren't preparing food or eating off the table in the restaurant.
