AIBU to be really wound up at women putting their handbags on tables in the restaurant?

it’s a real bug bear of mine. I find It extremely rude

I can't believe OP thinks 'google says' is a robust argument tbh. Google says a lot of things. Fine that it's a bug bear for some, but really 🙄

Thisismynewusernamedoyoulikeit · 01/03/2024 21:11

It's not a good idea to eat off tables, as a general rule.

When someone puts their handbag directly on my plate, I'll feel like I have a right to be offended. Until then, I'm chill, because germs don't jump.

SiobhanSharpe · 01/03/2024 21:17

I was in a vair naice reataurant in London a few years ago and the waiter brought a mini table, about a foot high, put it on the floor by my chair and put my handbag (which was on the carpeted floor) onto it. I was impressed.

Soupit · 01/03/2024 21:19

People put their handbags on the floor in toilets then put them on the dining table
Never ever have I put my bag on a toilet floor. If there is no hook it goes around my neck in a contortionist manoeuvre.
I wouldn't put it on a table either. Or my phone. Bad manners.

TunnocksOrDeath · 01/03/2024 21:20

Yeah, people occasionally put their outdoor shoes on before the get to the front door., and most hoovers to not sterilise as they go. Also most people put their bags on the floor somewhere at home (even if not while out) to free up their hands relatively frequently. Bags also get placed on train seats, where other passengers may just have had their feet up (revolting but not unusual). So there's every reason to think that most handbags are at least to a small degree contaminated with something that's come off the bottom of a shoe.
Putting your bag on a table in a restaurant might therefore be generally construed as a bit of a mucky habit.

Google says it is extremely bad manners to put your handbag on the table in a restaurant. Just something I thought most people would know. Basic etiquette

'Google says' 😂

drumbeats · 01/03/2024 21:23

@Goldx2

Not at all. People put their handbags on the floor in toilets then put them on the dining table. Eew

Well obviously YOU put your bag on the toilet floor. I certainly don't. Hook on back of door or on my lap or shoulder

drumbeats · 01/03/2024 21:26

Parkerpenny · 01/03/2024 21:07

Bags have been everywhere. Toilet floors, outside, in shopping trolleys. They find brlong on dinner tables.

'Outside'? People have been outside too yet they are sitting at table touching it with their hands no less
My bags don't go on horrid surfaces. When I go to the supermarket I have either a cross body bag or just my phone and keys in my pocket. I certainly don't put bags on toilet floors.

pictoosh · 01/03/2024 21:27

It's a random thing to be so chippy about. But ok. You don't like it.
Thank you for telling us that.

Howlongwillthistake · 01/03/2024 21:28

My biggest rage is trying to deliver drinks and food to a table with bags, phones, keys, glasses, magazines, gloves and other 'stuff' ...and the customer just sits there while you try to balance the tray and serve them when there's nowhere to put anything.
Add to that when you ask them who's had what and they don't answer and or carry on chatting. Arrrrggghhh

OneCornetto · 01/03/2024 20:46

Google had nothing!

Grin

Brilliant. Thank you @OneCornetto

OP - I suspect you might be the only person who puts their handbag on the floor in a toilet. I know I certainly never have, and from other replies I think I am the normal one here.
I mean, I don't put it on the table either, but that's more from a lack of space and risk of things getting spilled on to it or it getting splashed.

This is such a weird thing to get worked up about.

ILoveSalmonSpread · 01/03/2024 21:32

Posh people don't do it.
Does that help?

Abouttimeforanamechange · 01/03/2024 21:33

Quite apart from the hygiene issue, unless your handbag is a teeny tiny purse, there won't be room for it on most restaurant tables, when you've got your plate, glass of wine, glass of water, cutlery, cruet, fancy tealight or candle arrangement...

What about the days before Google? Was it OK then?
My 80 something mother in law hasn't got Google. Is she OK putting her bag on the table?

99victoria · 01/03/2024 21:39

I don't buy expensive bags - the most I've ever spent is probably about £50 - and I can guarantee that i have NEVER put my bag on the floor of a toilet! Most toilets have hooks on the door for this very purpose 😃

soupfiend · 01/03/2024 21:40

I wouldn't put my bag on the floor due to dirt and theft risks, also the hand bag hook wouldn't work for me because mine is a cross body and the strap length would mean it's still hitting the floor

SocksAndTheCity · 01/03/2024 21:42

You'd like the Ritz, @Goldx2 . They provide a little stool next to your chair to put your handbag on.

PeloMom · 01/03/2024 21:42

Then go to posh restaurants only where they bring bag stools. No one will offend you there.

Trust me, a lot worse is happening in the kitchen than a bag on the table.

GrumpyMiddleAgedCow · 01/03/2024 21:43

I always put mine on the chair next to me but I can’t imagine ever giving a flying f what the person at the table next to me was doing, when I’m out for food/drinks the only thing that gets on my tits is drunk screeching (and I like a drink so it’s not having 3 wines that bothers me it’s the ones who have done it and now want to burst my innocent ear drum) 😂

soupfiend · 01/03/2024 21:48

Jesus christ, I've just seen the comment about the toilet!! I have never put my bag on the floor of a toilet. And last night a waiter gave me a chair for my bag

Jeannie88 · 01/03/2024 21:51

Mine is a messenger one so always over shoulder but going out bags I would on my lap.

Goldx2 · 01/03/2024 20:36

Google it

Because you have written multiple articles on it? Or perhaps you read that other people find it rude and decided to follow? Either way it doesn't help your thread to tell someone to Google YOUR bug bearer.

ancienticecream · 01/03/2024 21:55

YANBU! It's also a massive bug bear of mine. It creates an unnecessary separating barrier between you and your company, it's dirty, and it's akin to eating with your elbows on the table. I also hate phones being placed on the table. Put the damn thing away.

Put it on your lap or on the floor (between your feet if you're nervous of it being stolen).

Flowerfairie · 01/03/2024 22:04

do you not eat your food off of a plate?
