I've had loads of these symptoms on and off for nearly five weeks! persistent non productive cough that was making me breathless so I finally saw a doctor today as I had awful shivers and aching joints over the weekend and heard crackling in my chest after every coughing fit. He diagnosed community acquired pneumonia. I'm now on steroids and antibiotics. I can't wait for them to start working, I'm so fed up with the coughing!

I’m on holiday and have caught something. There was local parade and fireworks in the town I’m in last night but all I wanted to do is stay in my hotel room and sleep. My legs feel like they have lead weights on them. This morning the fever and sore throat started.

Where are you? Myself and friends have just returned from Tenerife and we are all very ill.

DonutHead · 04/03/2024 21:34

I’ve just been hospitalised with flu - which very much took me by surprise! It seemed to have triggered a secondary infection though which was what caused me to be taken in, but I had a had a positive flu swab while there. The hospital said they are seeing a lot of of it at the moment, so maybe not just a cold OP.

AmaryllisChorus · 04/03/2024 21:22

I had all those symptoms last time I had Covid. Was drinking 6 pints of iced water a day

I only had covid in December so assumed I'd have some immunity for a while. Maybe not 😕

Hope you're feeling much better soon!
How do they treat flu out of interest?
My husband's just been to stock up on various vitamins so hoping to feel like a new woman in the morning 😄

onetwothreeee · 04/03/2024 21:41

i'll add myself on

Finally feeling mainly better but my fever lasted 12 days

Thank you!

I was given tamiflu but also fluids through a drip as I was vomiting so much, and anti-sickness meds and paracetamol intravenously too.

I’m in Canada. I don’t think the weather and multiple bus trips I’ve taken here has helped.

Was just in Calgary airport and even with my ski jacket on I couldn’t stop shivering. A combo of paracetamol and ibuprofen helps but it’s less than ideal! Am going to try and get some ‘proper’ cold and flu medication in Banff this afternoon once I arrive..

hilbil21 · 04/03/2024 22:04

@bluetongue hope you feel better soon - it's bad enough at home, nevermind travelling.

fishonabicycle · 04/03/2024 22:17

Yes! Mine started in half term, headache, tired, shivery, achy, temperature of 38.7. Lasted about 10 days, then left me with a runny nose and coughing up slime. Horrid.

Jeannie88 · 04/03/2024 22:44

Yes, turned out to be covid!

Damn, I'd better test again. Hope you're on the mend now.

DaftFlerken · 05/03/2024 12:01

was prescribed a course of steroids yesterday & they have worked miracles, even managed to sleep a full night

bluetongue · 05/03/2024 17:00

Stuck in my hotel room on holidays with this flu. Well not sure if it’s flu but felt too ill to even watch TV last night and couldn’t get warm for ages until the medication kicked in. Tried to walk down the street this morning but it’s - 20 here this morning (not a typo) and the cold air went straight to my sore throat. Still feel slightly feverish but much better than last night.

I’m hoping to ski tomorrow and it’s supposed to be a bit warmer (though still well below freezing). Wish me luck!

MagAmberson · 05/03/2024 21:02

I'm 8 days into this and my only symptom now is a crackly, mucusy cough. I've been working from home the last two days but even on phonecalls my colleagues gage been commenting on how bad I sound. I'm going to see if I could get seen by my GP later in the week

PumpkinPie2016 · 05/03/2024 21:20

Pretty sure I have/am getting something 🙄

I have been absolutely exhausted the last few days (sat in bed even now!), fever during the night and just weary/achy.

I work in school (teaching) and had quite a few kids off in various classes today- all things like fevers/aches and pains/feeling sick/extreme tiredness.

It's rubbish!

Hope you feel better soon!

I have felt like total shit for 2 days, awful hacking wet cough and achey. I have coughed so much my ribs hurt. Now appear to have free flowing snot. Also knackered behind belief.

It started with just a tickle small cough four days ago.

I hate taking meds but I have taken the max amount I can which is unusual for me. I’m starting to feel quite tearful.

Same!! I cried driving to work yesterday but don’t get paid and lose some bonus when off sick so I had to go in. I bought some Beachams lemsip max cold and flu capsules this morning not hoping for much but I’ve got to say they really did help!!

ViciousCurrentBun · 05/03/2024 23:00

@Mumof2NDers I have improved but it’s day 13. Ended up boiling fresh ginger and mixing with honey. That was the most soothing.

bluetongue · 06/03/2024 00:18

I picked up a (free) Covid test from the Canadian pharmacy and I’m officially Covid positive 😭

It’s not fair. I go over a year without getting sick and get taken down while on holiday.

I know some people only get the sniffles with covid these days but I’ve had pretty bad fever, chills and sore throat.

Oh gosh you poor thing. My DP took his mum to New York for her “special birthday” and she got it for the first time there. She spent five days in a hotel room while DP amused himself round NY. An absolute bust.

Yeah it really sucks.

The weird part is just before I get sick I felt really quite depressed and teary. I was convinced the location I was in was making me depressed so paid more money for the privilege of travelling to a new destination to be sick there (this decision was made before I knew I was sick). Covid brain is a thing isn’t it?

Hopefully I’ll look back on this one day and laugh about it …

JustDiscoveredBueno · 06/03/2024 02:16

Daughter is now fever free, eating again and managed to stay awake until bedtime! It was scary seeing her such a shadow of herself for so many days.

Other kid now feeling sick with something else that some kids in nursery have. Some kids looked so miserable at pick up, but they can only send them home if have a fever or vomit or chickenpox, not if they feel really shit and parents want them in/have calpoled the temperature down - so it feels neverending. Actually, it feels neverending because it is neverending. It felt neverending by Christmas and it's got even worse this term.

I wish there was an anonymous WhatsApp type group for the class or something where a parent could say 'sorry, heads up, having to send kid in with really shitty [name of whatever virus here] - can't/won't keep them off'. Then we could have more of a choice whether to keep kids off a couple of days feeling well and happy now, or keep them off when they've caught it and feeling ill.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/03/2024 03:00

I've had Covid 5x, 3x last year alone. Am now on 3rd cold since a week before Christmas, RSV being one of them with my newborn and toddler sick as well. Toddler developed croup and was given a steroid in emergency; newborn was admitted to hospital and on oxygen 4 days. I'm fairly certain the current cold was caught last week at toddler's playschool (another child with snotty nose and bright red cheeks). I'm at the point where I alternate between anger and despair as I'm a single mum and caregiver to my own mum. I really wish people would stay home when ill and if needs must, then wear a mask.

Garlicking · 06/03/2024 03:33

@Mumtobabyhavoc, you are going through it! 5x Covid's horrendous (and dangerous), and it's terrifying when little kids are really poorly Flowers

I could not agree more about masks. People clinging to their "freedom" (to not wear a bit of paper on their faces) and bugger everyone else's freedom to stay healthy!

They should be more Japanese.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/03/2024 04:18

@Garlicking thanks for the sympathy. It has been hell. Was coughing so badly in hospital when I went in for c-section that the doctor relented and gave me codeine to quell the cough. Cough was so bad it felt like stitches were ripping and I was almost in tears. That lasted 3 weeks before toddler and I got RSV and a few days later newborn and mum had it. It was scary.
When I was in S Korea and Japan pre-pandemic I saw people wearing masks. It's quite sensible and considerate, really.
