I haven't got THAT cold, but I appear to have a cold that can't make its mind up whether to stick around.

For nearly two weeks, I've been having a streaming nose, sore throat and been totally bunged up, but never for more than a few hours at a time. It just keeps coming and going.

Most peculiar.

I’m on day 14 now and still unable to go out in public due to cough being so hideous. Nose streaming constantly and my taste and smell has gone completely. I opened a jar of cloves today and could not smell a thing- DH confirmed they were very strong smelling. Seriously fed up.

greengreengrass25 · 02/03/2024 17:23

My teeth hurt but have no cold, just feel dizzy

TheMousePipes · 02/03/2024 18:03

Week 5 for me. Went to the doctors yesterday and they confirmed a secondary bacterial infection taking up a good portion of my right lung. Antibiotics are helping.

VillanellesCoat · 02/03/2024 19:09

Not sure if it’s ok to mention over-the-counter remedies (MNHQ will delete if not I guess)… Benylin Mucus Cough Max syrup has massively helped today! Never had a cough remedy be so effective and so quickly.

This evening I could taste a steamed carrot! So hopefully some senses are recovering.

God, mucus is such a horrible word. For the last 10 days I've felt like my whole torso was just filled with the stuff. Almost choking with it. And no real voice for about a week.

Shortkiwi · 02/03/2024 20:04

I’ve been ill for over 3 weeks, a cold followed by laryngitis and then another cold and now worst cough ever. Can’t sleep - last night I was frightened by my coughing fits because I couldn’t get my breath. Tested neg for Covid. Tried all the usual remedies. Concerned that my immunity is shot. Basically transferred from bed to sofa in last few days.

TeaAndStrumpets · 02/03/2024 20:13

I was convinced I had Covid before Christmas last year. I was bedridden with it, frighteningly weak. That seemed more centred on my sinuses. I went deaf for two weeks ((eustachian tubes blocked). Now this really nasty chest. I've done numerous Covid tests, all negative. So maybe something nasty is doing the rounds to replace Covid.

ViciousCurrentBun · 04/03/2024 01:40

How are people feeling? I’m still coughing a lot but this is the first day I haven’t vomited so feeling happier. Appetite back a bit and pottered a little. I’m on about day 11.

thaegumathteth · 04/03/2024 02:37

Had (13) is normally not one for bugs but she's had a cold / sore throat since Xmas. Finally developed into tonsillitis last week and now she also has crazily snotty nose and conjunctivitis. Totally over it for her, she hasn't been 100% in weeks.

bluetongue · 04/03/2024 02:57

I’m on holiday and have caught something. There was local parade and fireworks in the town I’m in last night but all I wanted to do is stay in my hotel room and sleep. My legs feel like they have lead weights on them. This morning the fever and sore throat started.

Alleycat1 · 04/03/2024 04:28

I must be unlucky as these symptoms are all a normal cold in my experience. I always, without fail, get all these symptoms including the loss of sense of taste and itchy ears. My sister is the same and we have to roll up tissues and plug our noses as the mucus is unrelenting. Usually lasts about 10 days. On the plus side we only get a cold about once every 5 years and after seeing the state of us our husbands never play the 'man flu' card.
Feel really sorry for those of you suffering and hope.you get better soon.

I did a video GP appointment on Friday and was prescribed penicillin - it’s not really made any odds so far. He said it was a sinus infection but also made a big deal about a cough lasting three weeks needing referral to a respiratory consultant which has scared me. This was a private GP via my partner’s work health insurance as seeing a doctor in our surgery is like waking up to find a winning lottery ticket has been posted through the door, and even then they only do phone stuff unless you have limbs hanging off.

Ha in an ideal world!

My cough has receded mostly, ribs are very painful still.

Getting a visual migraine as I type..

What fun!

Actually it’s scared me sufficiently to ring my surgery - first appointment is 25 April so booked that and let’s hope I am not dead by then…

Sending get well vibes to all!

AndiOliversGlasses · 04/03/2024 16:19

Today’s delight, alongside the cough, is sinus pain and being deaf!

Gave in and saw GP (luckily I have private cover through work). Video one sent me for an in person appointment. Going to the surgery was exhausting, and have come back with a 5 day course of antibiotics. I thought that you had to be coughing up green for an infection but he said I definitely had one in both chest and sinus. Fingers crossed I feel better soon.

I still don’t really understand the science of how a viral cold becomes an infection.

PickAChew · 04/03/2024 16:32

Bacteria can be quite opportunist, @AndiOliversGlasses - respiratory viruses do a nice job of mashing up the cells in your various tubes, weakening your first line of defense and it becomes party time for the bacteria that are almost always lurking but usually kept under control.

AndiOliversGlasses · 04/03/2024 16:35

Thanks! That makes a lot of sense. I wonder if my having had flu in January too meant my immune system was already even more exhausted than a cold would usually make it.

Shortkiwi · 04/03/2024 17:39

Feeling better and less coughing last night. Full of mucus though! Went to buy saline nasal spray/rinse - don’t know if that will help. Looking at foods/supplements to boost immunity. Also feel I need to take more exercise and get fit.

Myotherrideisabroom · 04/03/2024 19:42

We've had it on and off since October/November. It gets better for a few days and think it's gone, then bang - it's back.

Have had antibiotics, nasal sprays, more antibiotics, bloods, awaiting chest xrays. It has it's claws dug right in.

Garlicking · 04/03/2024 19:56

Me too 😭 I've cancelled everything this week, after spending most of last week expecting to get better with a long sleep. I have not got better, I feel like a thoroughly decayed corpse. And am now constipated from all the paracetamol, decongestants and not being able to eat anything but digestive biscuits for several days.

Misery loves company ... thanks for the thread!

Snoozymoozy · 04/03/2024 19:58

When did everyone start to feel better?
Day 5 here and still feel horrendous. Been napping most of the day. Eyes feel hot, nausea, terrible cough, soooo tired. Wondering if I should call the Dr tomorrow

ViciousCurrentBun · 04/03/2024 21:20

I feel a bit better but still unwell. I’m on day 12.

AmaryllisChorus · 04/03/2024 21:22

I had all those symptoms last time I had Covid. Was drinking 6 pints of iced water a day
