Dd aged 10 is on day 19 of it. Never known her to have an illness that has lasted this long and she just can't seem to shake the cough off. She has gone to school today although I don't really think she is well enough but she has already had 5 days off.

Neriah · 26/02/2024 13:24

Yes. And it's not a cold - it's flu. The real kind, not the "it's a bad cold" type. Apparently there are 4 seperate varieties of influenza circulating at the moment, and in February hospital admissions from flu peaked, so it's very much in circulation.

RockStarship · 26/02/2024 13:26

I don't usually make a fuss about colds but this particular cold was next level- I felt so unwell with it and two weeks into it I was still so congested. I've now got a slight cough left but other than that I'm ok. My dh on the other hand caught the same cold from me and he's 4-5 weeks into it and still so unwell. And it weirdly keeps starting to get better and then flares back up again with the worst symptoms coming back full force. He's done covid tests (negative) and the doctor says it's just a cold but it's really dragging for him now and he seems very low and tired at the moment due to how long he's felt so unwell.

Avocadorable · 26/02/2024 13:29

Had to ring in sick today after a full weekend in bed, cough is so nasty I can’t even take inhalers(asthma), school run dropping kids off all but wiped me out and I really wasn’t safe to be driving.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 26/02/2024 13:29

Checking in. I started with a super sore throat on about 10 Feb, then proper chills, just couldn't get warm no matter how many layers I put on. I ended up going off sick on Tuesday 13 as I felt so awful - which was the right move because within a couple of hours of emailing my manager I was coughing so hard I was vomiting. Awful! I was off the rest of that week and back at work last Monday as I would have needed a doctor's line, but it's just about killed me and I still feel rubbish.

I've lost taste completely so I do wonder if it's some weird Covid strain even though the test I took on that first Tuesday was negative.

Wormwoodgal · 26/02/2024 12:01

Me too - it's grim. The feverish nightmares are particularly unsettling.

Oh god I almost forgot the dreams 😲

sweetpeaorchestra · 26/02/2024 13:34

Yes! DD has it too. So achey and shivery and awful chesty cough. Had a proper fever on Friday.
We never used to get ill all the time but this is our second bug in 6 weeks or something! Are viruses worse post covid or is this just random?

PastorCarrBonarra · 26/02/2024 13:35

Yes, started feeling ill on Friday at lunch time. Finished work early and spent the weekend lying on the sofa. Feel marginally better today but not up to going anywhere so am working from home but not very productively (manager is aware and supportive). Terrible cold sore on upper lip, red nose, fatigue.

YuleDragon · 26/02/2024 13:36

yup, well, coming out the end of it.

started with a headache/fatigue, then turned into runny nose from hell for 3/4 days, then a cough. I'm on day 14, still a bit sniffly, and got an annoying cough and no energy.
last night was first time i managed to go to bed without needing a lemsip to keep the snot/cough at bay.

AgnesX · 26/02/2024 13:37

ViciousCurrentBun · 26/02/2024 10:18

@AgnesX i think I have coughed more over the last four days than I have in my entire life including two confirmed times having covid.

My household has ruined the country's recycling attempts....I've gone through an entire box of Kleenex balsam in less than a week 🤧 Right now I wish my nose would stop running.

Soozikinzii · 26/02/2024 13:39

Yes I've got it ! And I am very rarely ill ! Must be a very strong bug. Commiserations to all of us xx

Sausagenbacon · 26/02/2024 13:41

Yes. Horrible. Plus this
Yes and with a horrible intermittent tickle in my throat that makes me cough violently on and off.
So I'm involuntarily peeing. Tmi I know.

I've lost my sense of taste too, for the first time ever in 50+ years. Even a super strength curry at the weekend was a waste.

DH had a great time scoffing it all!

That is one of the symptoms of whooping cough. Coughing fits that go on and on even when you have no breath left in your lungs, it can make you vomit or wee.

DrCoconut · 26/02/2024 14:46

I'd advise anyone worried about this to see a dr. It's not fussing or time wasting. DS ended up in hospital with the current plague that's circulating. It's very nasty.

pokebowls · 26/02/2024 14:58

Might be Covid. Our whole family went down. I was convinced it was wretched cold. Out of sheer boredom because I couldn't do anything, I took a test. It was Covid. My son tested positive also. My dH not but he was ahead of us so probably past the viral shedding phase.

pokebowls · 26/02/2024 15:00

The modern strains of Covid are not picked up well in the lateral flow tests. If you get a negative it may or may not be negative. If you get a positive it's likely positive.

afjliytc · 26/02/2024 15:04

I'm just coming to the end if it. Started 10 days ago with cough, fever, muscle aches. Felt rotten, not like an ordinary cold. Pretty sure it turned into acute bronchitis too. Convinced it was flu, even bought tests from Tesco but tested negative. Negative for Covid too. It's the worst 'cold' I've had in years! I'd love to know what virus it actually is

Gagagardener · 26/02/2024 15:09

I'm in the North-East. Mine lasted 5 weeks. It was like living out a PowerPoint of every cold symptom (except fever) on a shuffle and repeat loop.

The most dramatic 24hrs began +/- ok, so I thought I was recovering, then a headache turned into a migraine. I went to bed and slept out the afternoon, and woke up with a very sore throat. Rough night, because coughing woke me. Next morning I had a nose bleed.

The cough was the worst thing, and the effect on my voice.

I visited drs' surgery twice and had my lungs listened to with care both times. No crackling. It was pronounced a virus, though 2nd GP said it sounded like whooping cough. (I had that as a child, half a century and more ago.)

For a lot of the time, I was a bit better one day - able to eg shop - then worse the next, so I'd rest - and be a bit better next day.

Oh for a few days of sunshine and breezes to blow away germs!

My commiserations to all who are suffering.

Mazuslongtoenail · 26/02/2024 15:11

🙋🏼‍♀️

and I had it at Christmas too. I thought it was flu then but not sure why I’d have it again if so. Definitely not a standard cold though. It’s rough.

HurdyGurdy19 · 26/02/2024 15:53

I thought it was flu, as I had every symptom listed on the NHS website, except for vomiting. I missed the flu jab this year - won't make that mistake again.

I started off violently shivering. I was wearing a tshirt top, a fleece and my Oodie and was under a winter weight duvet, but was so cold. My whole body was shaking/shivering.

That passed and I went to the opposite extreme and was feverish and sweating. I have a clear picture in my mind of me typing a very detailed text message to my manager telling him my symptoms. I also have a very clear picture of me typing a similarly detailed message on Mumsnet. Neither message happened.

In fact, even the light from my phone screen hurt my eyes too much to look at it. I was either hallucinating, or having vivid dreams.

And the cough - OMG. Awful. Coughing until sick, and I actually got DH to go and get me some TenaLady as I was peeing with every coughing bout.

The flu symptoms passed in about 6 days, but having not eaten anything in that time, I had no energy, and was off work for 3 weeks. I'm still not 100%, 5 weeks later.

When I saw the GP, she said it's being called "the 100 day cough", and when I googled it, it said it's what they're calling whooping cough.

Whether it's psychosomatic I don't know, but the best night's sleep I got, with relief from the coughing, was when I put Vicks Vapour Rub on the soles of my feet, with a pair of socks over. If it's real - Vicks are missing one hell of a marketing opportunity!

Notmollybutdolly · 26/02/2024 16:01

I’ve got a really sore throat at the moment as if my throat is cut with knives!!! And when I got up today I had no voice. I’ve been feeling out of sorts for a few days, no actual symptoms except being super tired and just not right?? Anyone else have this? In Glasgow.

Devondweller · 26/02/2024 16:28

I've had it about 6 weeks, had 2 lots of steroids, back at gp tomorrow. Never seen my Dr so much! The coughing is the worst, I had whooping cough as a kid and its similar, just cannot catch my breath and coughing til I'm sick, rattly chest etc. My nose has stopped running but my head/ribs hurt and I am miserable. Whatever this is, its evil! I'm self employed and have had to take time off, which never happens! Roll on feeling normal.

Stressedafff · 26/02/2024 16:46

Thankfully I’m not coughing. Just a flushed face and sore throat with aches. Omg I feel awful. DD wasn’t this bad the other day 🥴

yes @Notmollybutdolly my throat is so painful that when it swallow I get a shooting pain in my throat & up into both ears. It woke me up every couple of hours of hours last night & i'm absolutely wiped out, it's been a week so far & just not getting any better. No other symptoms except the throat
