Lighthearted obviously but I may well divorce my partner over this before we are even married 😂

My partner and I disagree on how to 'correctly' put the food shopping away. I won't say who is who yet so as not to bias opinions.

Person A empties the contents of every bag onto the kitchen worktops first - we're talking about 5-6 bags - and only when every single item is on the kitchen worktops do they then begin the process of putting it all away into the fridge, freezer and cupboards.

Person B empties the contents of all bags one by one straight from the bag into the fridge, freezer or cupboard (thus missing out the step of emptying onto the worktop first).

Person A thinks their way is correct because you can see all your shopping first before you put it away. Person B thinks Person A is adding in an unnecessary extra step and taking longer where there is no need.

Who is correct?

Person B. But I make sure I pack the bags in the order they go. Like all fridge and freezer stuff together so easier when get home

Squidwardthesnail · 17/02/2024 22:52

I'm A. DP is B. He puts everything away a bag at a time. So opens the fridge multiple times. Freezer multiple times etc. I empty it all onto the bunker in piles. A fridge pile, Freezer pile, baked goods pile etc. So I only have to open and shut each thing once. Dp takes twice as long as me to get it done so I like to think I'm right! But DP procrastinates in a few ways so that could be part of it

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 17/02/2024 22:54

@tiredmama23 person b is correct because freezer and fridge goods must be stored asap!

Interesting, because we are the opposite way around (I'm B), and yet I'm faster by far getting it all put away than my DP!

I pack my bags in freezer, fridge and cupboard sections and then unpack a bag at a time starting with freezer, would never get everything out on the sides, just go bag by bag 😂

Namedrama87 · 17/02/2024 23:20

I am person B mixed with Person A. My husband is Person A.

I empty one bag at a time but if for example I find something that goes to the freezer, I keep it separate with other freezer things and deal with them later.

As you typed it I would assume your are Person A and your partner Person B.

Reveal who is who at the end :)

That's because you pre-sort your shopping. Presumably your DP doesn't? Also you didn't need to say it was blooming obvious that you're B :)

We get online deliveries and obviously those aren't sorted so doing it your way would definitely take loads more time!
When I do shop in-store a couple of times a month I just want to shove everything in and leave ASAP no time to be faffing about sorting.

Also, even if you do 'pre-sort' you might not know how they fit. There's no room to put anything down next to our fridge freezer so if I don't eyeball the size of the stuff I have to sit on the floor, keep opening doors to rearrange things. Maybe you already know how to pack it. Or your freezer/fridge compartments are big enough for everything. IDK. I don't buy the same things every time, depends on the offers. And we always need to pack it super tightly until a quarter gets used up.

ThinWomansBrain · 17/02/2024 23:32

Depends
If I've shopped at one supermarket, it's reasonably sensibly divided between bags.
If I've been to more than one supermarket, and say fridge stuff in each bag, I unpack from multiple bags - wouldn't necessarily lay it out on the table though.
Rare occasions that I get a supermarket delivery, most likely to unpack it first to check its all there.

EcstaticMarmalade · 17/02/2024 23:41

I do a kinda hybrid, so that means bags in middle of floor and let the bags fall down at the sides so I can see shopping all at once, then work through the lot by destination. Sometimes it’s the kitchen steps not the floor.

LuckyOrMaybe · 17/02/2024 23:51

Sorry if I'm duplicating. The bigger the shop and the smaller the kitchen, the less sense version A can possibly make.

Mind you I've only ever lived with moderately small kitchens and can't imagine having the counter space to do this degree of unpacking!!

Notthatcatagain · 17/02/2024 23:53

I try to avoid having my DH put shopping away, there's an odds on chance that at least one thing will disappear completely, only to be discovered in a random place, months after its gone out of date

QueenBean22 · 17/02/2024 23:55

Who has time for A?

definitely B

dizzydizzydizzy · 17/02/2024 23:59

I has a row with exDP about this same
Issue. He was person A. Trouble is he would empty everything onto the table and then only put the fridge and freezer stuff away. I kept on telling him tbat I'd prefer him to leave the cupboard stuff in the bags so
I could carry the bag to the cupboard and quickly empty the whole bag at once.

SwordToFlamethrower · 18/02/2024 00:02

First of all, pack bags in the supermarket according to where they will end up. A bag of fridge items, a bag of freezer items, a bag of toiletries etc etc.

Then, when you get home, you empty one bag at a time in the same area.

Deadringer · 18/02/2024 00:07

WholeMe · 17/02/2024 18:58

I unpack it all first, but put in different places. Fridge and freezer stuff on table near the fridge, cupboard stuff on the worktop near the cupboards, bathroom stuff on other side of table near the door, and cleaning products at end of table opposite the under sink cupboard where they live. Then I will do each section one at a time.

This is exactly what I do.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 18/02/2024 00:12

It depends whether you’ve packed your shopping bags correctly or not. If correctly, ie
freezer stuff
fridge stuff
bathroom stuff
cleaning stuff
cupboards

Then it’s easy to do bag by bag but if you’ve jumbled the packing in the first place then I’m with empty them all out and sort. I would not be taking a bag to the freezer, then the cupboard then the fridge.

Moier · 18/02/2024 00:19

Mine is delivered from Sainsbury.. the driver puts it all from the crates onto my counter tops.. l then put away my freezer stuff and split any food that needs splitting into freezer bags.. then l put away fridge items.. then the pantry/ cupboard items.. then the bathroom items.. if it wasn't delivered.. I'd still do it this way.

Runningwildish · 18/02/2024 00:25

I'm A because I have shopping delivered and it's the quickest way to let the delivery driver get on his/her way

auspreg · 18/02/2024 00:51

I do both! Change it up depending on the day! I can't seem to decide which way I prefer!

Growlybear83 · 18/02/2024 00:53

I would definitely be person A, but then almost all of my food shopping is delivered and there often isn't much logic in the way the bags have been packed.

Nanny0gg · 18/02/2024 00:55

CaineRaine · 17/02/2024 18:55

I do A so I can be more efficient putting it away - fridge stuff first, then freezer then food cupboards. Otherwise I am back and forth between fridge, freezer, cupboards etc depending on how the bags have been packed which takes longer.

If I've packed the bags, similar items are packed together.

So B all the way

Thriwit · 18/02/2024 01:21

I just take items going to the same place from whatever bag they’re in. Never really thought there was any other way to do it tbh. I know what I bought and I know how I packed it.

Nowadays we usually get an online order delivered - the driver puts the crates by our front door, I just quickly take the things from the crate and put them into large bags, roughly grouped by type/destination. Take bags into kitchen, empty them by destination.

Both completely emptying all bags before putting anything away, and emptying & putting away one bag completely at a time, seem inefficient to me.

fabio12 · 18/02/2024 01:52

I pack items in order they will be unpacked - with heaviest at the bottom obviously. So all frozen in 1 bag, meat for fridge in another and if space other fridge items, lader things in another bag etc. Then take the bag to the area and unpack, or better still give one to each person in the house to unpack with the kettle on!

coxesorangepippin · 18/02/2024 01:53

Person b

Don't do the work twice

snackatack · 18/02/2024 01:55

Do you not 'sort' as you bag? So all items kept in the same place in the same bag?

In my house - everyone takes one bag and puts it away!
