Lighthearted obviously but I may well divorce my partner over this before we are even married 😂

My partner and I disagree on how to 'correctly' put the food shopping away. I won't say who is who yet so as not to bias opinions.

Person A empties the contents of every bag onto the kitchen worktops first - we're talking about 5-6 bags - and only when every single item is on the kitchen worktops do they then begin the process of putting it all away into the fridge, freezer and cupboards.

Person B empties the contents of all bags one by one straight from the bag into the fridge, freezer or cupboard (thus missing out the step of emptying onto the worktop first).

Person A thinks their way is correct because you can see all your shopping first before you put it away. Person B thinks Person A is adding in an unnecessary extra step and taking longer where there is no need.

Who is correct?

As IF my husband EVER put the shopping away. Even once.
I’m person B.

mrsbyers · 17/02/2024 21:44

A here , as then I can send husband off with the stuff for garage deep freeze or the utility room in one go rather than multiple times.

Routine is come in drop bags , clear out fridge and arrange remaining stuff then unpack everything

KnittedVera · 17/02/2024 21:45

I'm a bit of both. I empty one bag at a time but as I come across fridge or freezer stuff I put them on the bench so I only need to open the fridge door once.

drspouse · 17/02/2024 21:46

Neither is right.
Sort items on table into fridge, freezer and cupboard. Put into whichever is closest as you go (fridge in our case) and the others when all empty.

I thought this was what person A was doing!
I do it this way, but only because our small freezer gets so full that I need to move bits around. So I need to see everything that belongs in there first

ducksinarow123 · 17/02/2024 21:48

I'm person A. I empty it all onto the sides and split it into fridge/freezer:cupboard piles. Then I put things away.
My fridge/freezer makes a really annoying beep when it's opened so I just limit the number of times it has to be opened. Plus when it's all out on the side you can see how much you have and know how much room you are going to need to put it away.

Kezabella84 · 17/02/2024 21:54

Obviously you’re B. I do it like you but my partner does it like your partner.

I just leave him to get on with it.

WandaWonder · 17/02/2024 22:02

I think we are both, it is genuinely weird to me but now thinking about one week onw way then maybe the next week another

But I think we are more A than B

pikkumyy77 · 17/02/2024 22:05

Im person A having also strategized the bagging so that i know which things go to deep storage vs things that must be put away instantly.

FrangipaniBlue · 17/02/2024 22:05

CaineRaine · 17/02/2024 18:55

I do A so I can be more efficient putting it away - fridge stuff first, then freezer then food cupboards. Otherwise I am back and forth between fridge, freezer, cupboards etc depending on how the bags have been packed which takes longer.

Pack your shopping at the supermarket by how it gets put away.

Unpack 1 bag at a time!

FrangipaniBlue · 17/02/2024 22:14

@tiredmama23 @UnNiddeRides

We don't have a dishwasher but DH puts washing up away like this too!

He literally lifts it off the drainer and stacks it on the worktop next to the drainer.

JUST PUT IT STRAIGHT IN THE CUPBOARD YOU TWIT!!!!!

Dery · 17/02/2024 22:23

I used to be Person B but now I’m Person A. I find it more efficient to see what has been bought. If you unload straight from the bag, that can involve several visits to the same place within the kitchen (cupboard, fridge etc). If you pop everything on the counter first, you make fewer trips to actually put things away. But each to their own.

Greengagesnfennel · 17/02/2024 22:26

Person B because obvs you bagged it so that fridge is in one bag. Store cupboard in other etc....

CheesecakeandCrackers · 17/02/2024 22:28

OK I've only read the first post as I want to make a guess that person A is a man. I've never seen a man jnload shopping without displaying it all as if they need a reward for their efforts. Will go finish reading now!

Don't you pack all your bags according to where the contents would go? So all freezer stuff is already in a bag together, cupboard stuff is all together and so on.

JustAnotherManicMomday · 17/02/2024 21:31

B all the way. Surely a means in summer months frozen items start defrosting. Common sense is it goes straight away else your effectively doing the job twice.

YES! This was my point to DP - you're doing the job twice over! Why?? 🤷‍♀️

1 bag at a time straight to wherever it’s going but that is because it has been packed with like items at the shop - utility stuff in one bag. Fridge freezer stuff in another bag. Dry goods in another etc but if I’m not putting it away I don’t care how someone else does it 😀

Person b is correct.

Why do you need to see all your shopping before you put it away? Confused

I asked him this. Alas, he couldn't answer me 🤔

I'm with Person A. The problem with doing it one bag at a time is that sometimes there are things which are better suited to going on the bottom/at the back of a shelf (e.g. the stuff that we won't use straight away/stuff that takes longer to go off/heavier items), and things which are better suited to being more easily accessible at the front. So emptying stuff onto the counter means you can then organise what you've got and stack things more efficiently, instead of having to move stuff in and out of the fridge as you go from bag to bag.

I think this is his angle tbh, having watched him today 😂

Guavafish1 · 17/02/2024 22:43

A

Mischance · 17/02/2024 22:44

tiredmama23 · 17/02/2024 19:29

The bags are sorted by fridge / freezer / cupboard products already in the shop. So I'm not zig zagging all over the kitchen, so to speak. I go to the fridge with the fridge bag or bags in my hand, empty it / them, then same for freezer, then same for cupboards. I know what's in each bag roughly as I've packed it that way in the shop. So no need to be back and forth.

But think of the exercise you get .... much cheaper than the gym!!

ItsAStupidQuestion · 17/02/2024 22:45

I just vaguely throw my shopping into bags at the supermarket, other than making sure bread/eggs/anything that will get squashed go into one and keeping that on top.

When I get home, I empty them into zones near the area they live - fridge, other fridge, tin cupboard, snack cupboard, condiment cupboard, under the sink... Stuff for upstairs goes on the stairs until someone goes up and my chest freezer is in the garage so I put frozen stuff into a bag and then take in it there. Then back to actually put stuff away.

Feellikeafailurenow · 17/02/2024 22:48

I’m person a 🙈

i try to pack on the shop with similar so fridge stuff altogether and freezer stuff together but i still end up emptying it all our first.

put freezer stuff away first then fridge then cupboard. Take thingz out of boxes and sort in a certain way. My husband is more of a b but he doesn’t put the shopping away much as he just leaves me to it and my ways

SocksAndTheCity · 17/02/2024 22:50

TheNameIsDickDarlington · 17/02/2024 22:30

Person A is adding unnecessary steps. Person B is right.

If I'm going to the supermarket in person that means I'm bringing it home on the tube or the bus, so I don't have lots of bags to sort stuff into.

I have a rucksack, and then one or at most two extra shopping bag/s for the overflow, so I need to spread the weight out (tins and so on). I keep the cold stuff together, but the rest is mostly chucked in heaviest first to keep the bags even.
