Lighthearted obviously but I may well divorce my partner over this before we are even married 😂

My partner and I disagree on how to 'correctly' put the food shopping away. I won't say who is who yet so as not to bias opinions.

Person A empties the contents of every bag onto the kitchen worktops first - we're talking about 5-6 bags - and only when every single item is on the kitchen worktops do they then begin the process of putting it all away into the fridge, freezer and cupboards.

Person B empties the contents of all bags one by one straight from the bag into the fridge, freezer or cupboard (thus missing out the step of emptying onto the worktop first).

Person A thinks their way is correct because you can see all your shopping first before you put it away. Person B thinks Person A is adding in an unnecessary extra step and taking longer where there is no need.

Who is correct?

Im A and dh is B

My reasoning is that, the bags are emptied and they go straight back into the car, I group items as empty the bags and more importantly I need to organise the items in freezer, fridge and cupboard which is much easier when you can see everything

pastypirate · 17/02/2024 21:16

I'm person a but mostly I'm not allowed because dd1 does the putting away and kicks us out of the kitchen.

What is this madness with people throwing bananas tins and tampons in the same bag?! Organise as you shop then there's no need to take out all out and sort it!

Ocado

WhichEllie · 17/02/2024 21:20

I set all the bags on the island but then fold/flatten the sides of the bags down so I can see everything and put it away. It’s the best of both. Grin

neverenoughplants · 17/02/2024 21:20

I'm with Person A. The problem with doing it one bag at a time is that sometimes there are things which are better suited to going on the bottom/at the back of a shelf (e.g. the stuff that we won't use straight away/stuff that takes longer to go off/heavier items), and things which are better suited to being more easily accessible at the front. So emptying stuff onto the counter means you can then organise what you've got and stack things more efficiently, instead of having to move stuff in and out of the fridge as you go from bag to bag.

CaineRaine · 17/02/2024 18:55

I do A so I can be more efficient putting it away - fridge stuff first, then freezer then food cupboards. Otherwise I am back and forth between fridge, freezer, cupboards etc depending on how the bags have been packed which takes longer.

This.

Mazuslongtoenail · 17/02/2024 18:56

Person A. Otherwise you’d be arsing about going into each cupboard a load of times and opening your fridge again and again which then makes it work harder to get up to temperature.

I put things on the worktops in rough zones so then putting it in each cupboard / fridge is really quick.

Yep this!

AngelinaFibres · 17/02/2024 21:22

I unpack the bags several items at a time in the kitchen. I will have packed them in a way that suits my unloading method as they came off the supermarket belt. Fruit goes straight into fruit bowl on the worktop. Cupboard stuff goes in cupboards as I unpack it several items at a time Stuff to go in kitchen freezer goes in as I find it. Stuff to go in big freezer in utility, washing powder, stain remover, fabric conditioner go in a pile on the table and go into the utility in one go. Toiletries go on the table in a pile and then they are put on the stairs for the next person who goes up to take with them. There are only 2 of us and no pets now so not a huge amount of shopping. My husband shops on Monday and cooks Mon,Tues,Wed. I shop Thursday and cook Thurs, Fri, Sat. I don't know how he unpacks because when he is doing it is his job .

BuddhaAtSea · 17/02/2024 21:24

B. I think DP is B too, I never actually watched him unpack the shopping.

We have a rule: you start it, you finish it. So I genuinely don’t care what he does, as long as he does the whole job from start to finish.
Say, the dishwasher is empty. He who puts the first item in it, loads the whole lot. We stack very very differently, we each have our systems. You choose what’s for dinner, you go buy and cook it.

Gobolina · 17/02/2024 21:26

Person b is correct.

Why do you need to see all your shopping before you put it away? Confused

TiredOfTHECHANGE · 17/02/2024 21:27

A! One “section” at a time!

FabFebHalfTerm · 17/02/2024 21:28

BBBBBB

I'd have to put A in the footings!!

I order the shopping, I know what's coming, I unpack the delivery into plastic baskets and then it's easy to put away.

Wallywobbles · 17/02/2024 21:29

It depends on how the shopping is packed. We pack it by fridge, veg, freezer etc so no need to do like DH and empty everything out.

Fionaville · 17/02/2024 21:30

I pack my shopping bags according to where the contents belongs. So the fridge bag gets emptied onto the side, then packed away. Cleaning stuff bag gets emptied on to the side, then put away.
So neither of you are correct 😅

JustAnotherManicMomday · 17/02/2024 21:31

B all the way. Surely a means in summer months frozen items start defrosting. Common sense is it goes straight away else your effectively doing the job twice.

SD1978 · 17/02/2024 21:32

Person a. Put everything out and then put it away, I can see everything and re arrange stuff where I want it

donteatthedaisies0 · 17/02/2024 21:32

A .

Whizzgosh · 17/02/2024 21:33

If A and B don’t watch each other then it doesn’t matter 🤷🏻‍♀️

You unpack into plastic baskets. That's the same thing as A just into baskets

Can't you just sort according to location when packing in the store, that's what I do. Then unpack 1 bag at a time

randomusernam · 17/02/2024 21:37

This all depends on how you sort the shopping bags. If you have everything pre sorted when you pack it in to the bag makes sense to just empty each bag in to place. If you don't pre sort definitely put out on the side first to see what's what.

BeyondMyWits · 17/02/2024 21:38

I get shopping home delivered so by default I guess I am an A. Not really any choice.
Shopping comes out of the crates into piles of frozen, fridge, food cupboard and other. You can deal with each pile all at once.

It is easy enough to do either way to be honest.

Universalsnail · 17/02/2024 21:38

I agree with person B

Same! I've roughly packed all my bags in 'zones' anyway, so they are emptied near to the correct 'zone' (as far as possible) then put away 👍

WingsofRain · 17/02/2024 21:41

Person B is correct. In my house person A empties the shopping onto the worktops and then leaves it for person B to put it into the cupboard below, which is even more annoying.
