Lighthearted obviously but I may well divorce my partner over this before we are even married 😂

My partner and I disagree on how to 'correctly' put the food shopping away. I won't say who is who yet so as not to bias opinions.

Person A empties the contents of every bag onto the kitchen worktops first - we're talking about 5-6 bags - and only when every single item is on the kitchen worktops do they then begin the process of putting it all away into the fridge, freezer and cupboards.

Person B empties the contents of all bags one by one straight from the bag into the fridge, freezer or cupboard (thus missing out the step of emptying onto the worktop first).

Person A thinks their way is correct because you can see all your shopping first before you put it away. Person B thinks Person A is adding in an unnecessary extra step and taking longer where there is no need.

Who is correct?

You missed a really key piece of info in your OP.

That you organize the bags as they’re packed at the grocery. So in his case B works.

But if the bags were packed Willy nilly, then A would be the way to go.

Willmafrockfit · 17/02/2024 19:14

i never take enough bags to the shop so they do land up willy nilly

and i refuse to buy bags as i have a million at home

Person A obviously!
Person A is popping together mental notes of meal plans as they view the shopping. Person B is methodical but doesn't see the need to plan in this way. Person A is very visual in information processing, Person B is technical/logical.

Not quite. The meal plans are done before the shopping is - so that visualisation of meals isn't necessary. We have it written down on the fridge 😆

I'm person A 😆

tiredmama23 · 17/02/2024 19:15

@PTSDBarbiegirl
However I do agree with your final sentence there - Person A is very visual in information processing, Person B is technical/logical. This rings true for us actually!

B - if Ive got all (or most) of the fridge and freezer stuff together in one or two bags.
But probably A if its all muddled together.

Tagyoureit · 17/02/2024 19:18

B is correct.

Also bags should be packed accordingly at the supermarket so its easier to put away.

My DH was an A put-awayer, he's now been taught the correct way! 🤣

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 17/02/2024 19:18

B is correct

Notsuretoputit · 17/02/2024 19:18

Very obvious you’re B and he’s A.

lemonyfox · 17/02/2024 19:18

Im sort of option A but I empty all bags onto the counters but into groups. Fridge items, freezer items, specific cupboard items.

Only then will I put away because I know how much I have to put in each area.

tutttutt · 17/02/2024 19:18

It was pretty obvious you were B as your description of A was tainted with details as you weighted it negatively.

I do empty most out first as that way I can put all the meat and dairy away in the fridge in one go. Otherwise I have to keep opening the fridge each time I fish out a fridge item and Ocado don't always pack bags well enough to rely on all one type of thing being in one bag.
It's way more efficient otherwise I'm going back and forth in the pantry. Back and forth to the laundry. Back and forth to the fridge. Complete waste of time and really inefficient

CrikeyMajikey · 17/02/2024 19:22

A, I like to see it all and tidy/clean fridge, cupboard as I’m going.

DH does B and he never empties the veg drawer. Really annoys me.

I think person B is completely lacking logic. Unless the groceries have been packed in categories which they never are perfectly.
I order in from Ocado so cans and laundry and tampons can all be in one bag. Then more laundry and dish soap and kitchen rolls could be in a bag. Bananas, jars, tampons, broccoli in a bag.

You'd be going back and forth fridge to laundry to cupboard to bathroom for one bag. Then Again for the next. This is madness.

@tiredmama23
Ah but not if if I was going along the lines of "talking only 5 or 6 bags here", i.e. I didn't give away whether I thought that quantity was a lot or a little.
But then you added the little huge about B missing out the extra step. It was so obvious you were B

tutttutt · 17/02/2024 19:25

Jibe*

Neriah · 17/02/2024 19:25

I'm a B - but only because my shopping is delivered pre- sorted. If they were mixed bags I'd be an A.

tiredmama23 · 17/02/2024 19:26

@tutttutt
I should have clarified I don't do this with the bathroom cleaning products/ toiletries etc. I put those to one side and take them upstairs. This is just the food items - cupboards, fridge and freezer stuff.

I'm also Person A! I hate going to the cupboards over and over with items from each bag. Makes more sense to group them on the island, and take them all to the same cupboard in one trip.

Mischance · 17/02/2024 19:27

Take it in turns - and vacate the room when the other is doing the job.

tiredmama23 · 17/02/2024 19:27

I'm also not "completely lacking logic". I'm just efficient 🤷‍♀️

OP posts:
PTSDBarbiegirl · 17/02/2024 19:27

@tiredmama23 I'm Person A and my partner is Person B. We can't unpack together either due to exactly the same issue. He doesn't need to write anything down and I need to see all the shopping together as a step in the procedure. I just get it all delivered when I'm off as much as possible to avoid him giving disapproving looks!

LovelyDaaling · 17/02/2024 19:28

I can see advantages to both A and B. It depends on how you pack the bags at the checkout. If all the fridge stuff is in one bag, veg in another etc, do B, one bag at a time.
If the bags are a jumble of goods, A seems sensible to save opening the freezer, fridge etc numerous times.

webster1987 · 17/02/2024 19:29

Person B for sure. I feel like this shows Person A isn't the one doing the food shopping as wants to see everything first before packing away

The bags are sorted by fridge / freezer / cupboard products already in the shop. So I'm not zig zagging all over the kitchen, so to speak. I go to the fridge with the fridge bag or bags in my hand, empty it / them, then same for freezer, then same for cupboards. I know what's in each bag roughly as I've packed it that way in the shop. So no need to be back and forth.
