£108 on his soft drinks every month

I've been going through our expenditures today after realising how much money was going out of the account every month. I haven't kept a close eye on outgoings - I will own that. I have ADHD and it's not my strong point.

I have calculated that DP is spending £108 per month on his drinks alone.

He refuses to drink water/juice/cordial and moans when there's no fizzy pop, so he insists on buying a big bottle of lemonade from the corner shop most days at £2 a go, so thats £60 per month.

If that wasn't bad enough, he has atleast one Monster energy drink every night. They cost £1.60 so £48 per month.

£108 per month on fucking drinks.

AIBU to think that is bloody ridiculous.

Is it joint money or his money? I don't think it's bad...

berksandbeyond · 06/02/2024 17:36

2L of fizzy drink every day is very unhealthy! As for the money side of it, can’t he buy it in bulk to save some money? An adult who refuses to drink water is a bit of an ick though…

LlynTegid · 06/02/2024 17:36

The Monster Energy drink is the worst aspect by far of this.

MojoMoon · 06/02/2024 17:37

I hope he sees a dentist regularly 😖

Clicheinaqashqai · 06/02/2024 17:38

I probably easily spend that on drinks in a month, if I count coffees, soft and alcoholic drinks both at home and out the house. Is it all he drinks or does he also have beer, coffee, lots of drinks out?

Laurama91 · 06/02/2024 17:38

If you're just thinking money wise, can you get a card for anywhere like makro. Some stuff is cheaper some isn't. We get 12 monsters from around £10 depending on flavour

Camembertcufflinks · 06/02/2024 17:38

What about a fizzy water maker? There's the initial outlay but it could save money if he adds lemon squash to it. That's a lot to spend on fizzy drinks!

Mummyofthewildones · 06/02/2024 17:38

Tell him to buy it in bulk from Aldi at 49p a bottle. And knock the Monster drinks on the head before he gives himself a heart attack! That gets it down to £15 a month!

Historygirl91 · 06/02/2024 17:38

That sounds unhealthy and would give me the ick, a friend of mine had a bf like this who oils always be popping to the shop for a can of red bull or whatever, gross. He should wean himself off the fizzy pop and drink some water

lazyarse123 · 06/02/2024 17:39

The money wouldn't bother me so much as the amount of sugar and whatever shit is in the Monster that he's consuming. There's a reason why energy drinks are age related in some responsible shops.

We keep seperate finances in our own accounts but I suppose it would be classed as joint money as we're a family with children

When the money in his account runs out (about 1.5 weeks after being paid) he uses my card for the rest of the month.

Try and encourage him to buy cheaper brands (like Aldi/Lidl) or get him a soda stream.

35965a · 06/02/2024 17:40

That is an insane amount to spend on drinks. Especially given that he runs out of money. I’d be putting a stop to you giving him your card.

maybein2022 · 06/02/2024 17:42

I’d say the money side depends on if you spend a similar amount on say, coffees. It is a ridiculous amount though.

But aside from the money, health wise it’s terrible. I was addicted to Diet Coke and other similar drinks and gave them up, have already saved a fortune and feel better, honestly, I would encourage anyone to do the same!

MrsElsa · 06/02/2024 17:42

Ridiculous to buy from corner shop daily. What else is he buying there?

50p tesco/aldi etc lemonade, in bulk. Monster, ridiculous. End of story

Maray1967 · 06/02/2024 17:42

Aside from the dental problems he’s likely to run into, this is absolute madness, just as expensive coffee every day is. Tell him clearly how much he’s spending and that you will not be handing over your card anymore.

BertieBotts · 06/02/2024 17:43

He spends a month's wages in 1.5 weeks? And you have kids? Shock

It sounds like you're not the only one with ADHD in the relationship, and he's attempting to self-medicate, but not very effectively if he is impulse spending that badly.

Are you constantly in overdrafts/credit card debt? Or do you just earn a lot more than he does?

I have ADHD and I find YNAB very helpful in keeping track of our finances, but it's not free which makes it a pain to recommend it. If anyone in the household has a current student ID/email address then you can get a year's free trial which is worth doing.

Rainbowsworms · 06/02/2024 17:43

Don't get me started on the energy drinks, I hate it. It's a wonder he hasn't had a heart attack already.

Have you also counted up your spends? I agree that it sounds a little excessive and there are cheaper ways to do it but unless you are also willing to make sacrifices it will be a difficult change to enforce

I don't buy anything like that. I buy a box of decaffe tea bags every month and have all my hot drinks at home. I do drink some of the kids squash but that's only 80 odd pence a week as I buy the concentrated cheapo tesco one.

It doesn't sound excessive to me. Is money tight or something?

GasPanic · 06/02/2024 17:47

I got 48 cans pepsi max and 24 r whites for £20 last month from Iceland.

If he is drinking 2l diet pop a day that is a lot.

It is depending on incomings
That's 2 weeks worth of food shop for me, or my council tax for the month or my gas and electric bill. On pop!

She's already said he spends his months pay in 1.5 weeks.
