£108 on his soft drinks every month

I've been going through our expenditures today after realising how much money was going out of the account every month. I haven't kept a close eye on outgoings - I will own that. I have ADHD and it's not my strong point.

I have calculated that DP is spending £108 per month on his drinks alone.

He refuses to drink water/juice/cordial and moans when there's no fizzy pop, so he insists on buying a big bottle of lemonade from the corner shop most days at £2 a go, so thats £60 per month.

If that wasn't bad enough, he has atleast one Monster energy drink every night. They cost £1.60 so £48 per month.

£108 per month on fucking drinks.

AIBU to think that is bloody ridiculous.

You need to stop letting him use your bank card and he needs to learn to budget @Rainbowsworms , if he runs out of money so quickly every month then he's spending far in excess of his income. Show him the figures you've worked out and see if it makes him cut back a bit.

We keep seperate finances in our own accounts but I suppose it would be classed as joint money as we're a family with children

When the money in his account runs out (about 1.5 weeks after being paid) he uses my card for the rest of the month.

If he's running out of money ten days after being paid your household budget doesn't stretch to him buying drink two litres of lemonade and a monster drink every day, putting aside the toothlessness and diabetes that's incoming.

Does he only earn £200 a month? Because if he doesn't, then I don't think focusing on cutting his drinks budget is going to improve your family finances. You need to properly separate your finances as at the moment he operates on the principle "first I spend mine, then WE spend yours". Have a joined pot for bills and children's needs, then each spends their own money. None of this "he will use my card" business. I am sure pretty soon after that he will be able to make smarter financial choices.

He should have around £800 left after paying his O/D and share of the bills. I questioned whether he was gambling at one point as I couldn't understand why it was running out so quickly. He isn't, gambling that is, just paying back his overdraft and wittering the rest away on endless trips to the shop and whatever else.

You and others have made good suggestions, I'm going to heed your advice. Thank you.

Do you pay bills proportionally?

Do you pay bills proportionally?

No, I pay more as I earn more.

Is he an overgrown child?

Health aside, it doesn't bother him that he could get 2l of lemonade at Tesco for 25% of the cost? Why isnt he owning the fact he drinks so much lemonade and just adding it to the weekly shop? It would be SO much cheaper.

Does he waste money on other crap too? Nope, couldn't do it. What a poor example he's setting to the kids, what a man child.

Meadowfinch · 06/02/2024 18:35

I spend £100 on a month's food for one person. Your DP is wasting that much on sugary tooth-rotting rubbish.

I hope he doesn't complain about the cost of living !!

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/02/2024 18:36

Mummyofthewildones · 06/02/2024 17:38

Tell him to buy it in bulk from Aldi at 49p a bottle. And knock the Monster drinks on the head before he gives himself a heart attack! That gets it down to £15 a month!

This

WhichIsItWendy · 06/02/2024 18:36

Call me judgemental, because it's true.

  • Low earner.
  • Drinks copious amounts of lemonade and energy drinks
  • Takes mummy's card (oops, I mean "partners") card when he runs out of pocket money

Where is his sense of pride and responsibility??! I bet he also lacks ambition, drive and thinks the world owes him. Does he pull his weight in other ways? Sounds like a bit of a loser to me to be honest.

ObliviousCoalmine · 06/02/2024 18:38

Christ, what a turn off.

Thehamsterthatcametotea · 06/02/2024 18:38

Have you showed him how much he’s spending?
He shouldn’t need it spelling out but maybe you should.

Hankunamatata · 06/02/2024 18:39

Tesco do own brand lemonade for 39p which would massively cut down costs.
Dh likes monster but he shops around and buys pack of 4 or 12 on offer

ollypollymolly · 06/02/2024 18:40

Get him to read / or listen to ‘ultra processed people’ but Dr Van Tulleken. Very informative about how bad fizzy drinks are for you !

TeaKitten · 06/02/2024 18:44

If you want to save money, and you no you don’t buy enough crisps for your son then can’t you just buy more crisps, and the supermarkets cheaper fizzy drinks when you do your weekly shop?

That's not separate finances, that's cocklodging!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/02/2024 18:47

He drinks fizzy, soft drinks every day? Surely that’s incredibly bad for him - for his teeth, his general health and his bank balance!

Surely it’s normal for these to be an occasional treat? Like once a fortnight or a month?

Water should be the main, daily drink, the go to drink. And then hot drinks as and when. Hot drinks aren’t sweetened or fizzy!

idontlikealdi · 06/02/2024 18:51

Camembertcufflinks · 06/02/2024 17:38

What about a fizzy water maker? There's the initial outlay but it could save money if he adds lemon squash to it. That's a lot to spend on fizzy drinks!

I have a soda stream, love it but it doesn't save money.

itsmyp4rty · 06/02/2024 18:52

That's well over a £1000 a year on soft drinks! I couldn't live with someone so addicted to fizzy drinks.

beAsensible1 · 06/02/2024 18:53

I don’t check how much I spend on drinks so I’ve no idea if its a lot but it seems in efficient.

it would make more sense to buy it in bulk and in smaller servings, to slow his intake.

2l of fizzy drinks plus monster is awful for his his health let alone the lack of water.

can you move him to diet at least

BobbyBiscuits · 06/02/2024 18:55

If that's all he drinks I'd be thankful. Try living with someone who drinks 10 cans of lager and 3 bottles of water a day! Haha.
A bottle of lemonade plus one can of pop is hardly excessive. It's not especially healthy. Could he buy the drinks in bulk online? Some people really do hate drinking water. Maybe a soda stream might be more economical (I don't know as not had one).

ErrolTheDragon · 06/02/2024 18:56

let alone the lack of water.

That mostly is water. His hydration is the one thing he won't have to worry about, he'll be awash.

Stoufer · 06/02/2024 18:56

You mentioned he needs money for lunches at work - that is another area that can just swallow up money…. Eg if £5 per day, then £25 per week, £100 per month… taking sandwiches / leftovers can save ££.

RaininSummer · 06/02/2024 18:56

I am amazed at the people who don't think over a hundred a month on fizzy crap drinks isn't a lot. If he's a low earner then, aside from health concerns, he needs to cut this back. Why should he spend your hard earned money on such pointless rubbish which will make him ill.

Londonscallingme · 06/02/2024 18:57

Yikes! I’d be more worried about his insides if I were you.

She shouldn’t be thankful because someone else is married to an alcoholic!

Soda stream is a good idea though OP, or maybe even see if he will go for something gimicky like an air up water bottle
