To be pissed off the cake was cut before DE saw it?

DSrecently turned 3, and I had a party for him. I’m not very good at baking so paid for a local cake maker to bake a cake which tied in with his favourite colours and interests. As you can imagine, it wasn’t cheap.

The actual party went well but as the children were sitting eating DH and FIL started flapping around saying that they needed to cut the cake. I was trying to stop them but both are very difficult to distract when they get an idea in their heads, and I was also contending with various other things. So to cut a long story short they both cut it before DS has a chance to look at it.

I know it doesn’t ’matter’ really but I am annoyed.

That would annoy me. Does that mean he didn't get to blow out candles on his cake as well? I'd be very pissed off with this.

Ruinedcake · 28/01/2024 13:13

Yes although I decided to forgo candles in the light of safety! Grin

Did you not do candles on it? I’d be annoyed if that didn’t happen. But I don’t think he needed to look at it again afterwards, in particular.

Sexisthairdressers · 28/01/2024 13:13

I'd be annoyed. Did you let them know how you feel? How did they respond? Also, what does DE mean?

MeOrHimEh · 28/01/2024 13:14

They cut it before you sang happy birthday??

olympicsrock · 28/01/2024 13:14

They are complete wallies and I would be furious! All the children should be able to enjoy looking at the cake before it is cut. Did he even blow out the candles and have happy Birthday sung?
Explain to DH how the routine goes if he is so utterly dim about this.

BootsByTheBed · 28/01/2024 13:15

You knew they were going to do it so I don’t understand how you failed to stop them. Say no? Block them getting to the cake? How on earth has that even happened?

MintTwirl · 28/01/2024 13:16

Did you not sing and blow out the candles? At 3 that’s the most ex outing part for many, I remember having to relight and blow out several times because it was so exciting!

Crunchymum · 28/01/2024 13:19

So no candles? No singing of happy birthday? Was the cake hidden out of sight?

I can't understand how he didn't see it?

muchalover · 28/01/2024 13:19

It wasn't their party. Jeez

I'd get another cake and do it all again (a supermarket one). My kids used to all have a turn at blowing out the candles at each person's birthday.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 28/01/2024 13:21

Too much spit if everyone gets a go.

Ruinedcake · 28/01/2024 13:21

Everyone sang happy birthday but the cake was cut!

@BootsByTheBed i really did try to stop them, turned away and then it was cut!

MintTwirl · 28/01/2024 13:22

Surely you would just say no we can sing happy birthday and the.my cut it.

Well, my OP does say I tried to stop them. I’m genuinely not trying to be an arse but what did you think this looked like?

GerardWay123 · 28/01/2024 13:27

I used to spend silly money on my children's cakes. I always made sure the cakes were at home the day before so we could all gaze in wonder at them before the big day.

BootsByTheBed · 28/01/2024 13:27

i really did try to stop them, turned away and then it was cut!

So you said no? Physically stopped them and explained why? And they carried on? Bizarre.

Needmorelego · 28/01/2024 13:28

Annoying....but to be fair a 3 year old would have been happy with a caterpillar cake or one of those tray bake style ones you can buy at any supermarket.
Lesson for next year.

MumblesParty · 28/01/2024 13:36

No candles? Surely that’s the main point of having a cake? Cake appears with lit candles , everyone sings happy birthday, child blows out candles, everyone says hooray and claps. Without that ritual, it’s just a boring cake.

Noseybookworm · 28/01/2024 13:38

Slightly annoying but not the end of the world OP. I'm sure your little one had a lovely birthday and won't be worried about not seeing the cake before it was cut. I'm intrigued as to why you thought blowing out candles was too risky??!

LikeagoddamnVampire · 28/01/2024 13:39

They are selfish arseholes.

Who does that to a 3 year old? Tossers.

I told them not to cut it, turned away to a crying child, turned back and ‘‘twas cut. I am unsure what physically stopping them would look like in this situation! Both are similar, they just won’t let go of an idea once it’s in their heads.

Probably should have gone with a cheaper cake but I did want it to be nice 😭 (not saying a cheaper one wouldn’t have been.)

I didn’t go with candles because I was worried about a disaster!

MILTOBE · 28/01/2024 13:40

Those selfish men. It wasn't their cake, ffs.

It was nice Smile

Probably was over cautious but DS is fire engine obsessed and I was worried he’d try to hurl water over the candles or another child would reach out.

TeaKitten · 28/01/2024 13:42

YABU to refuse candles on a birthday cake. Most pfb thing I’ve read on here in ages! I’d be annoyed about them cutting the cake too. You all have bizarre cake etiquette.

Dancingqueen90 · 28/01/2024 13:42

I am annoyed for you!
Did you bring it up with your husband after? What did he say?
