To think I'm about to get very sick

ohnowhatdidido · 25/01/2024 15:45

I just ate one week old cooked lobster. It was in the fridge the entire time. And I looked at it and it looked fine. And it smelt completely fine. After about 10 mouthfuls I noticed green specks everywhere.

This was only 5 minutes ago. I'm probably about to be very very sick aren't I? To make matters worse DH and I had a raging argument just an hour ago, so he'll probably be quite pleased that I'm going to be spewing and shitting my insides out.

Doesn't coca cola neutralise stomach bugs?

Yes and Pepto bismol?

SmudgeButt · 25/01/2024 18:29

There is a portion of the inside of a lobster that is normally green and is, in my opinion, really nice to eat, full of flavour. It might just be some of that scattered about.

Mariposistaaa · 25/01/2024 18:31

It sounds like the poisonous influence in your life is coming from your partner, rather than the lobster.

blackpanth · 25/01/2024 18:32

Hope you're okay x

Moonshine5 · 25/01/2024 18:33

Why would your DH be happy that you are suffering with food poisoning????

Freckles81 · 25/01/2024 18:39

Oh OP, I am so sad for you; this sounds like an awful situation to be in considering what you just shared about your relationship and how different you and your partner are :(. Sending hugs, whisky, sympathy and hoping you can make a good decision for yours and your daughter's life and future happiness. lots of love 💐

Not a very convincing advice without you actually justifying your reasoning.

Because it’s largely pointless. Vomiting doesn’t fully empty your stomach and will almost certainly leave behind some of the infected food you’ve ingested. And by inducing vomiting, the acids also induced can cause injury to the throat, and mouth. If you think you may have food poisoning your GP or 111 is the way to go. If the food has gone bad the body will reject it soon anyway by making you vomit naturally and more effectively.

And while, Coca-Cola killed Bacillus and Pseudomonas, and tonic killed all but Acinetobacter, whiskey proved to be the mother of all terminators.

In ice cubes

Rosscameasdoody · 25/01/2024 18:52

It may be that you’ve eaten some of the tomalley - the soft green paste inside. It’s not recommended that you eat it, but lots of people do with no ill effects. If lobster is on the turn it will smell ‘off’ and the flesh will be squidgy instead of firm - the shell also turns slimy. If none of these things were present when you ate it, you may be OK so I wouldn’t try to make yourself sick, as you probably won’t bring back all of it anyway. If it was in any way suspect your own body will take care of it by making you naturally sick anyway.

In ice cubes

Good point 🤣. Wishful thinking on my part maybe!

User373433 · 25/01/2024 18:56

I think you'll be fine. As someone else said, eating off food isn't guaranteed to make you ill, and off seafood tastes bad really quickly so you probably would have noticed. I ate some off mayo yesterday (didn't think it could go off but it was a years old sachet and tasted foul, and I've been fine, though I guess it was only a small amount).

I once did take a risk with left out overnight salmon risotto and did get horribly ill, it started about 24 hours after eating. I've never been able to eat food left out since, though I accept fish AND rice was a particularly idiotic risk, though I was extremely risk averse with food and ate week old food for many healthy years before that 😂. Now my limit is 4-5 days if not fish.

notjustthe · 25/01/2024 18:59

this has taken a turn

ManchesterLu · 25/01/2024 18:59

You might be surprised. We can deal with a lot more than you'd think. You'll make yourself ill if you worry too much about it though. I always think what will be will be. Change the things you can, don't stress about the things you can't.

I think this is the bigger problem. You had an argument so he'll be pleased if you get food poisoning?

This

If I actually thought my DH would be delighted if I were sick, I would think the relationship was well over.

I think my husband is autistic and I'm far too much of an emotional person. We are absolutely hideous together. I know this isn't what the thread is about but I just wanted to say it out loud.

And my poor baby DC was crying just now while we were in arguing mode and I said sorry she has parents like us who just can't get along. I feel like we should divorce for her sake if not ours.

Well this is a different thread all of a sudden...........

Doesn't coca cola neutralise stomach bugs?

It's amazing stuff. As I learned from an episode of French and Saunders "If you leave a cow in a glass of cola overnight, it won't be there in the morning".

And it's true!!!!

😂

ohnowhatdidido · 25/01/2024 15:54

Not brave, just stupid 😭😭

Could you make yourself vomit, @ohnowhatdidido ? {Probably too late now }

I really hope you are ok.

Coke doesn't neutralise stomach bugs {the acid in our bellies is FAR fiercer than what's in Coke, but it's said that FLAT Coke can help recover from a stomach bug, Rehydration salts are probably better. I'm obviously not medically trained or a Chemist.

  • I think {don't quote me} it contains a minute trace of phosphoric acid. It cleans copper pennies, for sure!

Kittylala · 25/01/2024 17:18

Drink lots lots of water

@Kittylala why?

All you’d do is dilute the stomach acid, one of the jobs of which is to kill pathogens in the stomach.

I’d be drinking some strong spirits, personally.

MuckyEyebrows · 25/01/2024 19:33

This reminds me of my first night in Florida. We’d been out to one of those all you can eat restaurants and I’d never had shell fish before. So I ate lots of it.

A couple of hours later I’m on the bathroom floor of the hotel throwing up whilst explosive diarrhoea shot out the other end. The bathroom was a right mess, I was on that floor all night. Didn’t dare let the maids in the next morning as the whole room stunk.

When I was telling my mum what had happened she breezily replied “yeah you’re shellfish intolerant, that’s why we never let you have it as a child”

You’d have thought they would have mentioned it over the years 🤦‍♀️

Fluffyfleece · 25/01/2024 19:36

@SeaBlueSky it's Burns night! 🥃

This is awful for your poor child. I can’t imagine arguing if my child even so much as noticed let alone cried. I’d be more worried about this than food poisoning!!

OP, I'm so sorry. The lobster seems to be a bit of a red herring, pardon the pun. Wishing you well. Flowers

Oneearringlost · 25/01/2024 19:49

Food toxins usually take about 6 hours to affect you. That's why so many cases happen at night. After an evening meal.
Cold comfort OP. I'm sorry. I truly hope you'll be OK. As pps have mentioned, it's by no means a done thing. You may well be fine.
