To think I'm about to get very sick

ohnowhatdidido · 25/01/2024 15:45

I just ate one week old cooked lobster. It was in the fridge the entire time. And I looked at it and it looked fine. And it smelt completely fine. After about 10 mouthfuls I noticed green specks everywhere.

This was only 5 minutes ago. I'm probably about to be very very sick aren't I? To make matters worse DH and I had a raging argument just an hour ago, so he'll probably be quite pleased that I'm going to be spewing and shitting my insides out.

I thought the best thing to eat to combat food poisoning was burnt toast for the carbon?

Doesn't coca cola neutralise stomach bugs?

No

Maireas · 25/01/2024 17:44

Why? It won't do anything.

if it is going to cause problems at least you start from a position of being well hydrated 🤷‍♀️

Oneofthesurvivors · 25/01/2024 17:50

What kind of dickhead husband do you have?

I think it stems from the misunderstanding about what drinking a lot of water does! It certainly doesn't get rid of toxins.

I think Whisky is good against bad bacteria in food- I would have two doubles immediately!! In fact I use whisky whenever I have colds, stomach issues etc it works wonders

Kentmum345 · 25/01/2024 18:03

Any update OP?

  1. Don't eat week old cooked anything, regardless of what it looks or smells like.
  2. Don't stay in a relationship with someone who would be 'quite pleased' to see anyone sick under any circumstances.

Good advice for anyone !

No

And while, Coca-Cola killed Bacillus and Pseudomonas, and tonic killed all but Acinetobacter, whiskey proved to be the mother of all terminators.

Sorry- didn't expect posting the link would make such a huge image pop up too!!

I had a bean salad from M & S that I'd literally had in the fridge the whole time, but when I bought it, it was already reduced as it was on the day of the use by date.

I ate it about 3 days later, even though it looked, smelled and tasted ok... but I ended up with awful stomach pain, cramps, and diarrhoea the next day.

So, you do need to be careful with certain foods ie fresh bagged /ready made salads anything with kidney beans in, etc as I'm pretty sure these aren't that safe if you eat them when they have gone off (as I unfortunately found out!)

Takacupokindnessyet · 25/01/2024 18:07

It doesn't matter how it smells or tastes as most food poisoning bacteria don't cause a smell or bad taste. https://www.foodauthority.nsw.gov.au/consumer/food-poisoning/fact-or-fiction#:~:text=Most%20food%20poisoning%20bacteria%20do,bugs%20to%20make%20someone%20ill.

Godspeed.

Thanks for your replies. No vomiting or runs... yet. I'm hoping this means I'll be ok.

For those asking who has leftover lobster,it's certainly not usually me. I went to dinner with a friend last Friday and we ordered a lobster wellington. We couldn't finish and she was going on holiday the next day so I took it with me. AND THEN my dad was unwell so I went to visit him and only got back today and thought it would be a shame if the lobster was wasted. (And DH doesn't eat shellfish)

And I don't know how DH would react if I got unwell after a fight. I just hypothesised. He is usually very caring when I am unwell. However it was an extremely ugly fight which we are still battling through.

Oh dear sorry to hear that. Doesn’t sound great.

MissIndecisive2023 · 25/01/2024 18:17

Hope you are ok op - health wise and in terms of the argument.

ohnowhatdidido · 25/01/2024 18:17

Also green specks could have been tomalley having read everyone's reply. But I just saw green, panicked and chucked it.

Rosejasmine · 25/01/2024 18:17

I think you’ll be ok. If you cooked a raw lobster that had been in the fridge for a week probably a different story. It was cooked and smelled fine, you’re all good 👍

ohnowhatdidido · 25/01/2024 18:18

I think my husband is autistic and I'm far too much of an emotional person. We are absolutely hideous together. I know this isn't what the thread is about but I just wanted to say it out loud.

And my poor baby DC was crying just now while we were in arguing mode and I said sorry she has parents like us who just can't get along. I feel like we should divorce for her sake if not ours.

I'm emetophobic so would never eat lobster anyway as its not one of my 'safe' foods. Urgh I don't know, would the green have been mould then?Google says its safe for 3-4 days in the fridge so it maybe was a bit too long. aww sweetie, I hope you'll be ok! You might just get a bit of the runs x

Yep! Me too. Seafood is a no no for me.

Hope you'll be lucky, OP

Maybe induce some sickness if your not feeling very confident

Absolutely do not do this

Why not?

Cornettoninja · 25/01/2024 18:23

@ohnowhatdidido that sounds so difficult for you. Any chance one of you could go elsewhere for a weekend for a breather from the stress?

Turquoise123 · 25/01/2024 18:23

If it smelt fine then no reason to think you will be ill .Seafood smells v easily .

Fluffyfleece · 25/01/2024 18:25

Based on some of the previous messages instead of tea and sympathy we'll have to offer you whisky and sympathy.

Take a breather as emotions are running high after an argument.
