To think I'm about to get very sick

ohnowhatdidido · 25/01/2024 15:45

I just ate one week old cooked lobster. It was in the fridge the entire time. And I looked at it and it looked fine. And it smelt completely fine. After about 10 mouthfuls I noticed green specks everywhere.

This was only 5 minutes ago. I'm probably about to be very very sick aren't I? To make matters worse DH and I had a raging argument just an hour ago, so he'll probably be quite pleased that I'm going to be spewing and shitting my insides out.

Inducing vomiting can lead to:

  • damage to the tissues in your throat and mouth
  • dehydration
  • further harm caused by a mix of poison and stomach acid
  • chemical burns as the poison moves back up
  • aspiration, or inhaling vomit into your lungs

Doesn't coca cola neutralise stomach bugs?

Not at all but it's fairly good at replenishing electrolytes (salts in the blood) that are lost through the inevitable vomitting/diarrhoea. Flat cola will act in a similar way to dioralyte

Yerroblemom1923 · 25/01/2024 16:30

Obviously there's a reason not to purge chemicals as they'll burn your throat etc and medical advice needs to be sought to neutralise them etc etc when kids do daft things and drink things they shouldn't from under the sink.

thats more for when poison is ingested, not food.

I’m amazed freshly cooked lobster even got into the fridge 😂. It literally goes from the pot to the table then demolished in our house.

DocOck · 25/01/2024 16:34

Good lord, I wouldn't eat one day old cooked lobster from my fridge! God speed OP, hope you don't get ill.

Cornettoninja · 25/01/2024 16:34

@Redcar78 well the chemical burns aren’t really relevant and everything else is a risk whenever you vomit. If I’d eaten a food I thought would make me have diarrhoea, feel generally rotten and likely uncontrollably vomit I’d balance it up and try and lessen the effects by getting it out of my system by risking the effects of a timed vomit.

Doesn't coca cola neutralise stomach bugs?

No. That's an old wives tale.

DocOck · 25/01/2024 16:35

The drama over making yourself sick. It would be fine, I've made myself sick after a hangover before.

thebestinterest · 25/01/2024 16:35

The green specks you’re seeing is called tamale. If it smelled fine, I’d say you’re fine. You’d know if lobster was bad! By the way, don’t eat the green tamale,… some cultures do, but it’s not healthy.

Fluffyfleece · 25/01/2024 16:37

Oh dear @ohnowhatdidido - you'll have to stay with us tonight and we'll pass you a virtual sick bucket if required

Lol no green in lobsters normal you’d of been shitting and sicking 30 minutes ago! But your braver than me I eat cooked lobster immediately because I’m totally greedy but I wouldn’t push 2-3 days as a absoloute maximum! So you are brave!

If she only ate it 5 minutes ago how would she be sick 25 minutes before eating it? Im no doctor but pretty sure food poisoning only occurs after consuming

NeverDropYourMooncup · 25/01/2024 16:39

I'd be more worried about scombroid poisoning. Looks like an allergy. Take 3 antihistamines and call 111 if it doesn't improve quickly or you struggle to breathe/mouth swells inside.

Rangelife · 25/01/2024 16:39

I was bulimic and vomited after every meal for over a year, then I got whole pregnancy HG in all 3 of my pregnancies and the only real damage I did was to my poor teeth teeth. Purging once or twice isn't going harm. I feel quite well acquainted with vomiting.

Chypre · 25/01/2024 16:39

Are you sure the green is not the parsley from the butter? You can try to get rid of the lobster by drinking salt+soda solution and inducing vomit, then taking activated charcoal to absorb any pathogens from digestive tract.

LilacMcMeow · 25/01/2024 16:44

Not medically trained. Do you take pro-biotics? There is some research to suggest balancing out all the bad bacteria you've ingested with some good bacteria may be beneficial (e.g. Bio-Kult tablets. Natural probiotics like Kefir or Kimchi are great but maybe now is not the best time to start experimenting if your gut is already potentially unhappy). If something needs to come out, then just let it, it'll be for the best in the long run if your body gets rid of something it detects as bad (i.e. please don't be tempted to take anti-diarrhoea tablets or anti-sickness tablets). Lots of water, maybe simple foods like bananas or plain rice as and when you feel up to eating again. You might be completely fine. Our stomachs/digestive system is amazing. Every gut is different, every lobster is different. I hope it's okay.

purser25 · 25/01/2024 16:46

Make sure that someone knows you have eaten lobster in case you can't tell anyone.

MereDintofPandiculation · 25/01/2024 16:48

KreedKafer · 25/01/2024 16:01

Maybe induce some sickness if your not feeling very confident

Absolutely do not do this

Why not? Damage to throat and dehydration is a risk if the even if she doesn't make herself sick, since the lobster may do it for her.

Obviously don't make yourself sick if you've drunk something harmful, like bleach.

Dabralor · 25/01/2024 16:51

Well, that's been over 5 mins now so if the Op can read this, then she's probs going to be ok.

If your DH is gleeful about your being sick, you’ve got a much bigger problem!!!

Hope you are ok

Could the green bits have been specks of tomalley (lobster's digestive gland)?
Still not widely recommended to eat I'm afraid.

Best of luck!

Another tedious thread where people don't use their eyes and nose before eating food. There's this one and the chicken thread.

You probably throw out cheese that's one day past its Best Before date Hmm

OrlandointheWilderness · 25/01/2024 17:02

If it smelt and tasted fine then I reckon you'll be okay.
