To think I'm about to get very sick

I just ate one week old cooked lobster. It was in the fridge the entire time. And I looked at it and it looked fine. And it smelt completely fine. After about 10 mouthfuls I noticed green specks everywhere.

This was only 5 minutes ago. I'm probably about to be very very sick aren't I? To make matters worse DH and I had a raging argument just an hour ago, so he'll probably be quite pleased that I'm going to be spewing and shitting my insides out.

Why, just why would you eat week old lobster?

Fucking hell.

Mynewnameis · 25/01/2024 17:04

It passed the sniff test so I'm betting you could be fine.

I think people assume that if you eat something that’s gone off, you will always be ill every time, but that’s really not the case. Yes, it’s possible your lobster was on the turn, and if so then it’s possible that it might make ill, but you could just as easily be absolutely fine. It’s a risk, not a guarantee.

I’ve had diagnosed food poisoning a couple of times, but I’ve also eaten far more things, either carelessly or unwittingly, that could have given me food poisoning but didn’t.

More importantly, though, who the hell has leftover lobster?

Reminds me of Billy Connolly talking about a recipe by some Duchess which said "a good use for that left-over venison".

MidsummerDreamer · 25/01/2024 17:14

Make yourself sick. Now.

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 25/01/2024 17:16

🤢

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 25/01/2024 17:16

I'd definitely do fingers for pudding !! Really hope you're ok OP.

LenaLamont · 25/01/2024 17:17

@VickyEadieofThigh - I love that routine! We use it to refer to anything that is lovely and scarce... Leftover camembert (nope, ate it), leftover wine (nope, drank it) - that are all "venison"

Kittylala · 25/01/2024 17:18

Drink lots lots of water

Rosiiee · 25/01/2024 17:19

You might not! Bodies are surprisingly resilient!

Newbutoldfather · 25/01/2024 17:27

People are very precious about eating slightly old food.

Before reading this type of thread, I always kept roasts etc for a week before throwing them out. Neither I nor anyone in my family ever got food poisoning.
I now still obey the one week rule myself, but am a little more careful with my children.

But this 3 day guidance is probably at the 99.9% confidence level. I am sure that if food smells and tastes fine after a week, you are 95% likely to be fine (at least).

In times of extremis, people have eaten actual rotten food and not always got sick.

Let us know how you get on.

Goatymum · 25/01/2024 17:28

Surely it would’ve smelled/tasted bad if it was really off
i hope you’ll be ok whatever, I’m not familiar w lobster but few-day old fish doesn’t sound appetising 😆 🤢

Off topic, but what the hell? You’re hopefully not being serious. If you are, please realise that most people’s husbands wouldn’t be delighting in their extreme discomfort, even if they’d rowed. That’s just nasty.

BrutusMcDogface · 25/01/2024 17:30

If it tasted fine, surely it was fine? I mean, I’m not a lobster expert 🤷🏻‍♀️

Inducing vomiting can lead to:

  • damage to the tissues in your throat and mouth
  • dehydration
  • further harm caused by a mix of poison and stomach acid
  • chemical burns as the poison moves back up
  • aspiration, or inhaling vomit into your lungs

Surely all this could also happen if she's sick through eating the lobster anyway? In which case I'd rather risk it sooner than later when more chance of it being absorbed.

Lovemusic82 · 25/01/2024 17:35

Agree that if it passed the sniff test it’s probably fine. The green could be from some of its organs? I know with prawns you have to remove the tube/vein (I call it poo tube), if you don’t it’s a bit brown/green and gritty? Maybe it’s something similar?

If you’re not puking yet you are probably fine. Drink plenty or water so it flushed through quicker.

Mynewnameis · 25/01/2024 17:37

Don't make yourself sick. Ffs these Internet doctors

This is why you shouldn't use Dr Google if you don't understand either the question or the answer.

Willmafrockfit · 25/01/2024 17:39

i reckon it will be ok if it didnt smell and tasted ok

PerfectTravelTote · 25/01/2024 17:39
  1. Don't eat week old cooked anything, regardless of what it looks or smells like.
  2. Don't stay in a relationship with someone who would be 'quite pleased' to see anyone sick under any circumstances.
Ilovegoldies · 25/01/2024 17:39

When will people get it into their heads that you can't rely on the sniff or visual test? Some toxins don't announce their presence. Eating week old seafood is idiotic.

Potatoshigh · 25/01/2024 17:43

If it helps I've just posted a thread about eating some moldy chicken

Hope we are both OK tomorrow

Maireas · 25/01/2024 17:44

Kittylala · 25/01/2024 17:18

Drink lots lots of water

Why? It won't do anything.

gamerchick · 25/01/2024 17:44

Lalgarh · 25/01/2024 15:59

Doesn't coca cola neutralise stomach bugs?

No but it's excellent at keeping you relatively hydrated and quench that awful thirst that comes with puking. It does make you be sick again but as far as I'm concerned whatever is in there is better off out.

rainbowpuppy · 25/01/2024 17:45

I'm emetophobic so would never eat lobster anyway as its not one of my 'safe' foods. Urgh I don't know, would the green have been mould then?Google says its safe for 3-4 days in the fridge so it maybe was a bit too long. aww sweetie, I hope you'll be ok! You might just get a bit of the runs x
