To be worried about war here?

beitasmalltown · 20/01/2024 11:33

I don't listen to conspiracy theories but LBC news have reported this

NATO warn it's members to prepare their armies because they expect 'all out war' (the phrases used) with RUSSIA within the next 20 years

AIBU to be worried? Seems very extreme

Have previously felt very safe in my troubled yet generally very safe country with strong allies

If things get bad enough for the government to introduce conscription, there will also be martial law. Hiding your kids in the attic won't work, unless you count all the family getting shot at the same time as a win.

I'd take a bullet for my kids, as I'm sure most mothers would, to not see them being used as cannon fodder in a war created by a suit.

Anyway, i'd hope the Westminster Wasters would be going over in the first wave and our kids could follow in the rear....yeah right....

Yeah, let the suits go first. They will have made the decisions.

l’d hide my kids in the actic until Rishi had his Prada clad arse on the front line.

I will be surprised it putin survived the next 5 years, let alone 20. he is ripping the country apart, their young men are dying by the thousands and wealthy oligarchs are not happy with having their many luxuries taken away due to sanctions. it's only a matter of time before he is found dead of 'natural causes'

I am more worried about Iran being dragged into the middle east conflict and the repercussions of that on the already impoverished and traumatised population of the middle east and by extension the wider ramifications to the rest of the world

It's not being dismissive at all. We all have the same fears. It would be heartbreaking beyond words to watch our Children/Grandchildren to go to war but would you seriously expect someone else's child fight to protect yours whilst they hid?
My Son is in the RAF as is my Nephew and Great Nephew. My Granddaughter will join up in the next 6 months so i won't have to wait until there is conscription.
Hawkerslife if we get to the point of war ( i hope we don't) anyone that hides or is a conscientious objector will never be able to walk the streets freely again.

Conscientious objector can be a religious or philosophical position, formed by a deeply held belief that it is wrong to kill others. I assume this extends even to self defence i.e. the person would always choose to disarm an opponent rather than kill. People have the right to this belief, whether it's because of religion or philosophy, and you can't disallow it because your morality is different.

This is just laughable. According to who? You? Who obviously has family in the forces. I hope any child of mine would be a CO rather than kill someone. I’d support CO’s on the streets freely. But not the military.

CroftonWillow · 21/01/2024 14:26

The situation with Taiwan is also incredbily tense right now with arguably the highest stakes from the British/American perpsective.

CampsieGlamper · 21/01/2024 13:51

Perhaps, just perhaps your children might want to fight to defend their/our western way of life. Tolerance, liberalism, welcoming of those fleeing oppression, rights of those who are minorities or oppressed? The right to wear what you want?

Or would you rather servile cowards with no self respect, slaves?

what are you on about 🤣

Greenshake · 21/01/2024 14:34

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 21/01/2024 13:45

It’s very unlikely that conscription will ever be needed again for war. We’re unlikely to fight in that way. And the services don’t want thousands of unwilling trainees.

The parenting of many on MN would suggest that a lot of young people now would dissolve in the face of any criticism, physical effort or risk, in any event.

Human rights and other lofty legal concerns are irrelevant. They’d all get suspended, lawfully, in a time of war.

We’ll all be in the hands of the men and women who volunteer and are up to the job.

At last, a sensible viewpoint! And as Campsie said, perhaps some would actually WANT to go. What we have is worth defending.

FourFourthsDontCare · 21/01/2024 14:41

Re conscientious objectors: one of my great-grandfathers died at Passchendaele. Another was a conscientious objector and went first to prison and then (his own choice) to the western front as a stretcher bearer. I am equally proud of both and so very sad at the direction the world is once again heading in.

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 21/01/2024 14:56

The posters who want to parade their love and care by hiding the kids in the attic, taking bullets for them, demanding that politicians join up first and so on…crack on: you’ll never have your values and actions tested because conscription will not happen.

These are risk free promises. Knock yourselves out.

L1ttledrummergirl · 21/01/2024 15:04

The current British government can't process the applications they are receiving to voluntarily join the forces, resulting in applications being withdrawn. There's not a hope in hell they could cope with conscription.

Crapita have fucked up the recruitment process but someone is making money from it- eg, recruits now need sickle cell tests, but these can only be done in certain private clinics.

It's an election year, the government wants to scare us so they can be all heroic and save us from certain death. We are guaranteed to forget the last 14 years worth of fuckups, Johnson, Covid parties, Truss budget etc with this approach.

I'm not falling for it, so in short, no, I'm not worried.

Here's hoping the putrid dictator meets with an open window and a banana skin before too much longer 🙏🏻

Same goes for the other dictators and that idiot trump.

But who comes after? Putin's cronies are all old nostalgic violent men too. And it's the tripartite russia, China, Iran collab that underpins it all

Mummyratbag · 21/01/2024 15:35

Nikolai Patrushev is the rumoured favourite successor to Putin. I don't think he's a fluffy bunny rabbit.. he's another Putin

Do you really think those that went to war would return and have any respect for those that stayed at home and let others fight for our country? Do you really think your son's mates would return from a front line and shake the hand of those that stayed at home to play Call of Duty in their Mummy's attic?

beitasmalltown · 21/01/2024 20:55

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 21/01/2024 13:49

I think conscription relied on people not questioning stuff and ‘knowing their place’

l just don’t think this is the UK today.

Exactly

My son’s mates wouldn’t go either though. They’re all highly educated Millennials who don’t buy into war shit.

I don’t care what anyone thinks of him or me. I’d have more respect for a CO. We’re not in Churchill times or WW1. We don’t live in a forelock tugging society anymore.

Why are you so horrified that people have different opinions and that yours are the correct ones?

War is an abomination. There is no way my children are going to be some male warmongers cannon fodder. Absolutely no way. Let those who start wars get in the front line first.

That's all very well and good, but saying "let those who start wars get in the front line first' is not going to make it happen.

War is an abomination, you are not wrong, but if some other nation invaded yours then you think it's okay to just roll over and not defend your country? I would love to read the MN posts from all those hiding their adult children in the attic whilst moaning about an invading army.

Livida · 21/01/2024 21:32

I don't think we'd be talking about an army invading the UK in this scenario

But no one is going to invade us. They’d have to bomb us into submission first. How on earth would an invasion happen?

Unless Scotland or Wales did it. Or aliens.

Any planes will be intercepted, any missiles would be intercepted. So are we going to be invaded by boat? Like no one would see a massive warship chugging up the channel.🤷🏻‍♀️

But the current wars are all started by old men. To kill young men, women and children.

Yeah, but that doesn't mean a woman wouldn't do the same. Bloody Mary executed around 300 people and Elizabeth Bathory may have been the most prolific serial killer of all time - some sources say she murdered 650 girls. And wasn't Queen Isabella instrumental in founding the Spanish Inquisition?

Name me one woman who has been involved in Gaza or Russia or the Ukraine

Name any woman who has raped and mutilated innocent women. And carried out genocide or sexual war crimes.

Bloody Mary was 400 years ago.

All wars in the last century have been started by men, slaughtering young men, children and women.

War and fighting is usually perpetrated by men. Using an example from 400 years ago or the Spanish Inquisition is irrelevant.
