To be worried about war here?

I don't listen to conspiracy theories but LBC news have reported this

NATO warn it's members to prepare their armies because they expect 'all out war' (the phrases used) with RUSSIA within the next 20 years

AIBU to be worried? Seems very extreme

Have previously felt very safe in my troubled yet generally very safe country with strong allies

It feels like we are heading towards the end of days.

And it's all down to men really. Sickens me that women and children suffer so much at their hands.

beitasmalltown · 20/01/2024 12:04

I think my generation would have a hard time being forced to go to war for anyone

I am a late 90s baby so can fairly say that since it's my generation. I am Gen Z

We are very 'fair' minded but also shy and not collectively out for greater good per say. The mentality is 'if it doesn't serve you it's not for you'

Not all of us but we're obviously softer and had a better life than most of our parents

Nobody should be forced to go to war. What happened to never again

I'm pretty sure going to war wasn't easy for my grandparents generation either.

Russia are running out of people. Patriarch Kirill has been telling all those people who left for other countries at the start of the war to return and there'll definitely be no consequences 😂 Russia are in no position to start anything with a NATO country and, if they discharge a nuclear weapon, they know they'll be obliterated - Moscow and St Petersburg that is, the rest of Russia is mainly mud and chickens.

Same goes for North Korea.

Feel sorry for South Korea then

They will undoubtedly be caught up if that were to happen Sad

And don't forget Japan.

beitasmalltown · 20/01/2024 12:09

@MassageForLife of course it wasn't. I don't have any family who did go to war, but I have direct relatives either directly shot or gassed.

But I'm sure you can agree the young people are made of more fragile stuff than they were in the 1930/1940s

Of course we are. That's not 'bad' - our elders fought for exactly that, a better life and more freedoms.

But it's true

I thought that by the time we did have to get involved, soldiers would be pointless

Surely the quickest way to victory is to nuke us? Yes I know it's 'mutually assured destruction' but how are Russian soldiers getting anywhere near Germany, France, UK etc? Their only choice is to surely take us all out in a swoop

Salami tactics

I doubt the scenarios they're looking at involve Russia trying to take on and defeat all NATO countries at once. NATO includes not just UK, France and Germany but also the USA, so it's never going to be a Russian goal to defeat them all.

They will be looking at scenarios were Russia attacks one of the eastern NATO members like Poland or one of the Baltic states. What would the NATO response be and how could they oppose Russia without it escalating to nuclear war? That's the kind of thing they'll be planning for.

MrsSlocombesCat · 20/01/2024 12:12

No point worrying. It will happen or it won’t. Either way worrying about it now serves no purpose.

They were tougher because they had to be. Because they were living in wartime. They had no choice.

You think your generation are incapable of dealing with that? I disagree. I think, if it came to it, people would find their inner strength when they needed to.

I just hope it doesn't come to that.

Russia will not be starting ww3 , They can not even beat Ukraine.

Nobody would have thought Germany would have started another war while the Great war was still ongoing either.

Twenty years is a long time.

I am old enough to remember the 80's, I was in my teens then and it was when Russia was all out threatening war .If my memory serves me right ( menopausal 🙄) we had leaflets put through the door from the Govt telling you what to do about a nuclear attack .Incidentally , no idea why probably because of the papers my DD secondary had a talk about nuclear war in assembly recently and the 80's situation was talked about because my DD asked me if I remembered it .They were told if it happened they would just go to sleep .Don't really it was appropriate without parent's permission as it highly likely frightened some of them .As my wise beyond years DD said we cannot change what is going to happen , if it does it does ,you keeping living your life and don't stress about things you cannot control .

I thought the overall feeling lately is that Russia will definitely win, and more quickly when Trump becomes president.

I thought that nuclear weapons meant that world war in the style of the twentieth century was less likely to happen because of the inevitable escalatory consequences

Yes. The ‘nuclear deterrent’ lie that is used to use public funds to arm ourselves with enough nuclear weapon power to destroy the world ten times over. Yet. Here we are with war in Europe and both China, the Middle East and Russia hating us and wanting to dominate. Sadly, it was a lie, and makes no difference.

FrancisSeaton · 20/01/2024 12:28

Just to cheer us all up a bit you're far more likely to die of cancer then war

I remember that and the whole rubbish about building a shelter within your home. Like that would protect you and like you’d want to survive anyway.

Worry about climate change more.
A lot depends on if Trump gets back in.

Trump's own political supporter in congress (can't remember who), said recently he is not a man to prioritise allies

Not much scarier

Dooglydog · 20/01/2024 12:31

Honestly does it really matter, no point getting worried about something that may or may not happen.

as a teenager I was terrified of things like this, we were shown threads in school, that still gives me nightmares. But honestly I don’t give a shit anymore.

im more concerned about the Palestinians and Yemenis and Lebanese, who are actively getting bombed at the moment, than a hypothetical maybe war in the next 20 years.

i was not alive for the Cold War, i was born mid 90s, but no war ever came of all that so not concerned now.

beitasmalltown · 20/01/2024 12:33

What's the global consequence for Trump being elected again?

Just the fact he doesn't prioritise allies?

Where to start?
He's a megalomaniac
He changes his mind like that wind
He's rash
Impulsive
Trigger finger
