To be worried about war here?

beitasmalltown · 20/01/2024 11:33

I don't listen to conspiracy theories but LBC news have reported this

NATO warn it's members to prepare their armies because they expect 'all out war' (the phrases used) with RUSSIA within the next 20 years

AIBU to be worried? Seems very extreme

Have previously felt very safe in my troubled yet generally very safe country with strong allies

Completely agree. Never again?

I am old enough to remember the 80's, I was in my teens then and it was when Russia was all out threatening war .If my memory serves me right ( menopausal 🙄) we had leaflets put through the door from the Govt telling you what to do about a nuclear attack .Incidentally , no idea why probably because of the papers my DD secondary had a talk about nuclear war in assembly recently and the 80's situation was talked about because my DD asked me if I remembered it .They were told if it happened they would just go to sleep .Don't really it was appropriate without parent's permission as it highly likely frightened some of them .As my wise beyond years DD said we cannot change what is going to happen , if it does it does ,you keeping living your life and don't stress about things you cannot control .

If the nukes didn't get you the AIDS would.

Is my enduring memory of the 80s

OneTC · 20/01/2024 19:51

Also obviously not funny but it's kinda funny how so many people laughed at Cameron and his warnings about war in a divided Europe

EdinGirl · 20/01/2024 19:51

Yes, I fully believe that something will happen in the next 5 years (latest).

I think they are saying 20 years in order to warn the public and prepare them as much as possible without causing panic.

To be 100% honest, my husband and I are leaving the UK (and Europe in general).
I know this isn't an option for most, but if I was staying I would be making moves to be as prepared as possible.

I will still be going things to try and prepare once moved.

There's not much that will help in a nuclear situation but I do think that's unlikely.

It can't hurt for each home to gradually build up a supply of food, pet food, medical supplies etc.

If nothing comes of this then great... If something does, you won't regret taking steps to help you survive it.

Yess. Imagine Rishi sat on his pert little arse in safety and sending all the young people off to war.

We don’t have enough people to run the country, why not kill all the young ones off as well? Then we’ll have no taxes either.

It’s just laughable. My Dd was in the Desert Rats, Dm was conscripted into munitions, my uncles fought at Monte Christo and my great uncle was the only survivor of all the battles of Passchendalr. They were all broken by it and fiercely anti war. War is abhorrent. Conscription is disgusting.

I'm not sure there's anywhere you can go to avoid this situation

100% avoid any affects... Probably not.

But places like NZ will be safer in the event of a WW.

I don’t think Russia will be the ones we have to worry about. I think it’s us. The UK and the US. Our arrogance, our desire for global dominance, our greed - it will be the downfall of our countries. We can hope that means financial collapse and a full revolution and regime change rather than war but I’m really starting to wonder if we are perhaps the baddies in the world due to having our tongues firmly lodged up the wrong arse and we are going to reap what we sow.

MagicFox · 20/01/2024 20:11

If this is in reference to Russia, the estimate is at least 10 years to rebuild what's been lost in Ukraine

Absolutely! And UK is really like a third world country stuck in its Commonwealth past. Like it’s an important player in the world, and really it’s just a shitty run down island.

Well that's what Russia et al say...

Mambo19866 · 20/01/2024 20:46

Interestingly this might be the First World War where women get conscripted.

Wow I can't imagine how it must feel to be able to be so dispassionate about people's lives. "Interestingly"

Greenshake · 20/01/2024 20:54

It’s a discussion about a highly relevant topic. It’s not dispassionate to raise this as a possibility.

Livida · 20/01/2024 20:56

I was referring to the description, clearly

Greenshake · 20/01/2024 21:03

But Mambo is right, it would be an interesting to see what happened in that regard. You are letting your emotion cloud your thinking.

MagicFox · 20/01/2024 20:44

Well that's what Russia et al say...

If you mean by ‘et al’ the rest of the world then yes, you’re probably right. We need to stop assuming we are the good guys in all this. We might not yet be physically fighting but we’re the playground mixers starting and perpetuating all the fights. It’s suits us financially. To assume the Russians are the only country in the world to benefit from global instability is naive. We are just as bad as they are… at least

fleurneige · 20/01/2024 21:16

Israel have it all under hand though, they don’t need any support to destroy Hamas. Ukraine on the other hand are struggling and there’s a lot deaths of innocent Ukrainians than there are deaths of innocent Israelis. I’m not saying Israel isn’t as important of course, just that it’s less of a concern for world security.

fleurneige · 20/01/2024 21:27

that is another issue. What is happening with Israel is making the whole of the 'non Western' world turn against us- and bombing Gaza, and other countries around, is so so likely to escalate and spread.

Why? It's mostly very poor Middle Eastern countries who can't do anything about it anyway
