To be worried about war here?

beitasmalltown · 20/01/2024 11:33

I don't listen to conspiracy theories but LBC news have reported this

NATO warn it's members to prepare their armies because they expect 'all out war' (the phrases used) with RUSSIA within the next 20 years

AIBU to be worried? Seems very extreme

Have previously felt very safe in my troubled yet generally very safe country with strong allies

I had a conversation with my Grandfather it went something like..

Me - Grandad when Russia stop doing XXX (I can't remember what) will they invade us (UK)?

Grandad - they might

40 years on and I'm still bloody thinking about Russia..

I could write a book called "Things I worried about that never happened" ... I hope this is another one of those things..

Is this not a white older man scaremongering?

Brcause that’s what it seems like. And is not really representative of the countries in the NATO bloc? Probably represents about 20% or so of NATO country members. Why should we go to war because a general in NATO is bellyaching about it?

Who actually cares what he predicts? Hes got a very invested interest in promoting it.

that is another issue. What is happening with Israel is making the whole of the 'non Western' world turn against us- and bombing Gaza, and other countries around, is so so likely to escalate and spread.

The whole world is a tinder box right now but I think you are correct about the middle east currently being the most volatile.

It's interesting that posters seem to think there is no risk of significant escalation. Iran has a substantial arsenal of long range ballistic missiles including hypersonic missiles. There have been protests in Cyprus about the British military bases there, the Cypriots want them gone and I don't blame them, they are within Iranian missile range.

As well as what's happening in the Red Sea there have been missiles flying all over the place this week, the conflict has already expanded and now includes Yemen, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Pakistan, US, UK, France, Israel and Gaza.

I have seen multiple reports this week that Russia produces more munitions in a day than the US produces in a month and they are on the same side as China and Iran. I think it would be incredibly stupid of us to think that the US can save the day against a coalition which includes those three and maybe Turkey.

We need some serious diplomacy before things get even more out of control.

There are some certainties in the mid-term:

i) Russia won’t provoke NATO. Russian forces would be destroyed in a matter of days. Fears of the Russian military have turned out to be baseless. Their army is shit. (And it’s bollocks about their speed of production. They’re dragging decades-old vehicles out of storage.). It’s all a legacy of communist central command followed by mass theft.

ii) Iran is stirring up trouble in the Middle East through its proxy terrorists, but it’s unlikely to spread because the Iranian gov knows the US would hammer them.

iii) The usual shouty fools with placards will continue to blame the west for everything.

iv) the preppers board will get even more batshit.

Absolutely! And UK is really like a third world country stuck in its Commonwealth past. Like it’s an important player in the world, and really it’s just a shitty run down island.

It’s not that bad. This kind of thing has been hammed up since Covid on here

Sounds pretty close

There was a film like a cartoon about nuclear bomb. Was it titled something about the wind blowing? I remember something about hiding behind a mattress propped up against the wall..... I feel like I dreamed it but I'm sure it was a thing I school in the 80s.

Within 20 years!! Flippin eck Benny, I read your thread title assumed you meant any day now and I’ve got Line Dancing on Thursday.

It feels like we are heading towards the end of days.

And it's all down to men really. Sickens me that women and children suffer so much at their hands.

I kind of agree. I often wonder if women ruled the world, what a different world it would be.

Drosera · 21/01/2024 00:13

Russia can't even handle Ukraine. If NATO went to war with them it'd be over in 5 minutes.

Sadly female rulers have been no better historically. Humans in power do bad things irrelevant of their sex. It just so happens that most have been male.

DyslexicPoster · 21/01/2024 00:21

I refuse to worry about something like this that I have zero sway in. I remember being terrified of nuclear war as a very young child.

However I do sometimes remember I have three sons and at times like this I'm almost relieved they have SEN. One is dyspraxic and can't swim or ride a bike, he would never be conscripted. The other is severe needs. My eldest has mh so bad he is signed off work at 19.

We haven't evolved much have we?

But the current wars are all started by old men. To kill young men, women and children.

@MassageForLife against who? British, Irish, German , Swedish, whoever else as there's a lot, all fighting against The same Russian soldiers that are struggling to hold down Ukraine?

That doesn't make sense. They wouldn't win so surely Russia's only answer is nuclear weapons

Nah there are other things like cyber war.

pavillion1 · 21/01/2024 12:47

No one will be being conscripted, Its goes against Human Rights and Mental Health .

I agree but I think governments can enforce it if they choose to

IHS · 21/01/2024 13:02

I think, given people's mindset now, conscription would be virtually impossible. You can't force people to train or fight. They'd literally refuse to comply with any element of it. What do the authorities resort to then? Dealing with tens of thousands of refusniks isn't going to be easy. People were more obedient last century.

This is what l think. There will just be mass civil disobedience. People question everything nowadays. I just cannot imagine the average Zoomer or Millennial agreeing to go. They just won’t do it.

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 21/01/2024 13:45

It’s very unlikely that conscription will ever be needed again for war. We’re unlikely to fight in that way. And the services don’t want thousands of unwilling trainees.

The parenting of many on MN would suggest that a lot of young people now would dissolve in the face of any criticism, physical effort or risk, in any event.

Human rights and other lofty legal concerns are irrelevant. They’d all get suspended, lawfully, in a time of war.

We’ll all be in the hands of the men and women who volunteer and are up to the job.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 21/01/2024 13:49

I think conscription relied on people not questioning stuff and ‘knowing their place’

l just don’t think this is the UK today.

CampsieGlamper · 21/01/2024 13:51

Perhaps, just perhaps your children might want to fight to defend their/our western way of life. Tolerance, liberalism, welcoming of those fleeing oppression, rights of those who are minorities or oppressed? The right to wear what you want?

Or would you rather servile cowards with no self respect, slaves?

AtomicPumpkin · 21/01/2024 13:56

Hawkerslife · 20/01/2024 13:07

If they introduced conscription in 10 years my children would be in their 20s so prime candidates. Why should they sacrifice their lives for the awful decisions made by our governments and bullying men in power across the world? Yes, hundreds of thousands of men across the world have done exactly this and still do but we're talking a different generation in the UK. I can't see it happening without mass protest and i think people simply wouldn't turn up as requested.

I for one would be hiding my kids in the attic. I'd fight tooth and nail so they didn't have to fight someone else's war.

If things get bad enough for the government to introduce conscription, there will also be martial law. Hiding your kids in the attic won't work, unless you count all the family getting shot at the same time as a win.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 21/01/2024 13:56

Perhaps they might? But maybe they won’t. Especially if it’s a war started by a man sitting safe in his office. The scenario you are talking about won’t happen.

Nukes will be deployed before then. Why is it cowardice not to fight in a war created by a suit? Let them go first.
