We’ve just had someone come up to us as we’re getting our 2 year old into the car to be told that we need to think of our child as it is -5 degrees (it’s actually 3 degrees but not really the point) and they’re not wearing a coat or socks and she is a social worker and couldn’t not say something… we have literally just come out of a warm shopping centre and their shoes and coat are clearly under the pram and they had a blanket that they have put behind them. I thought you were supposed to put children in the car seat without coats on anyway??

i think she was right

no shopping centre is that hot on day like today that a kid wouldn’t need a coat and shoes

if you walk round shopping centre now most adults would have coat on

if your schedule wont wear socks then id force the wearing of shoes so they can’t take them off

it’s absolutely freezing outside

Utter nonsense

Alwaystired2023 · 18/01/2024 20:23

My child would probably go outside in mad baby bikini in this weather if she could 🤣 I can believe a child not having socks on !

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 18/01/2024 20:23

My dd used to run off with me chasing her with her coat at this age 😂. I would've said yes I know but thank you

OrchardBlack · 18/01/2024 20:24

Put tights on under their clothes, feet must have been freezing.

Needmorelego · 18/01/2024 20:30

@ManateeFair every shopping centre/shop I go in is always boiling. I have to strip my layers off and walk around in just a t-shirt. A kid in a pushchair - with probably a blanket or cosytoes would be perfectly fine indoors with no coat or socks.

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 18/01/2024 20:31

Simonjt · 18/01/2024 18:44

Yes they shouldn’t be wearing a coat, but they can still be appropriately dressed so they’re warm enough in the car without their coat. If its too cold for you to be outside in bare feet, its too cold for a child. Still a bit rude to approach and say something though.

@Simonjt
the toddler was in a pram, with a blanket & being put into a car seat.. It's not the same as walking around barefoot,

MyopicBunny · 18/01/2024 20:31

GintyMcGinty · 18/01/2024 18:45

I don't believe a social worker would do anything of the sort.

Me neither. What a stupid busybody,

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 18/01/2024 20:32

Carsarelife · 18/01/2024 18:45

I guess to the social worker it just looked bad I would guess the no socks rather than the no coat

@Carsarelife is she's a social worker, I'm a model.

lmhj1 · 18/01/2024 20:34

Did she stop you leaving.

Did she call the police.

No?

We have lost a little boy this week, as a country, who was with his father, who also died, and nobody noticed.

Perhaps we all need to be a bit more accepting of well informed advice and move on.

I would rather someone made a comment to me than ignored me.

I would rather someone broke my door down that didn't notice I had died.

Perhaps professionals are on edge. No harm done.

Gettingcoldergettingolder · 18/01/2024 20:34

I’m envious of all these posters whose child would keep tights on instead of socks. DD at 2 wouldn’t have any of it, no socks, absolutely no tights, no footed onesies. Would wear shoes when outside but no where else. On a ski holiday would only wear wellingtons with no socks, in 30+c would also only wear wellingtons or winter boots with no socks. Thankfully at 3 she now agrees to wear socks when out of the house (but not on our freezing cold stone tiles).

Ger1atricMillennial · 18/01/2024 20:35

I doubt it was an actual social worker, but if she bothers you again ask for her name and place of work to make a complaint.

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 18/01/2024 20:35

LadySlipper · 18/01/2024 18:46

Were you wearing a coat and socks?

@LadySlipper irrelevant. The OP wasn't sitting in a buggy with a blanket or being lifted into a car seat with a blanket.

chikdren shouldn't have costs on in car seats, it's dangerous!!

MiniPumpkin · 18/01/2024 20:36

If she is a social worker, she must be fresh out the wrapper. Sw have bigger fish to fry, not children with cold feet for 15secs

WandaWonder · 18/01/2024 20:37

Being out and about in life there will be people who say things we don't like or think shouldn't be said

Unless we lock ourselves away it happens, I would roll my eyes and move on

Get on with you... this wasn't well informed advice this was a snap judgement made by someone who didn't take the time to understand the situation, but still imposed themselves on a person.

This is a kid that didn't have socks or coat on (but with them clearly)- this is nothing to do with the tragic circumstances.

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 18/01/2024 20:42

fourlambbhunas · 18/01/2024 19:18

Why don't you put her in the pram and at least put her coat over her until you get to the car? That way you don't have to faff with putting it on for a 30 second walk. I'd have put her socks on before leaving the shop too

@fourlambbhunas

FGS the pram wouldn't fit into the car seat!

Blueberries7 · 18/01/2024 20:43

Ach, some of these replies are very sanctimonious and forget the reality of having a toddler.

Took my DD 22 months out yesterday, she took her boots and socks off before we left then again when we were driving. Screamed her head off when putting on her snowsuit as she got out of the car. As you said, you're not supposed to put a child in a car seat in a thick coat. Hates blankets and pulls them off.

DD also refuses rain covers so not much I can do if there's a sudden downpour.

I'm sure this woman wouldn't like the look of us either!

sprigatito · 18/01/2024 19:12

I think I would have said "Kindly go away, Madam" in a very high-handed tone, and then quietly fretted all afternoon in case she really was a social worker. I handle confrontation very badly.

I wouldn't have been that polite and would have told her to piss off. I really don't see an issue with a child not having socks on for a couple of minutes on the way from a shopping centre to the car. I very very rarely wear socks and like a previous poster I went out to my bins a couple of times today in bare feet.m, and I'm still here to tell the tale

fourlambbhunas · 18/01/2024 20:44

@WagWoofWalkMeeoow eh?

lmhj1 · 18/01/2024 20:44

@Ger1atricMillennial wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

Pulled them off. No coat in car seat, what a pain.

Person or social worker or whoever doesn't know. They could have been walking about all day like that, some do.

I don't think it's a problem

@Needmorelego me too, they're all too bloody hot! But even if it wasn't, no socks isn't going to hurt them & they'd whinge if they were too cold.

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 18/01/2024 20:47

fourlambbhunas · 18/01/2024 20:44

@WagWoofWalkMeeoow eh?

They were putting her in the car, she had to be lifted out of the pram. So why are you belly aching about putting her in the buggy??

fourlambbhunas · 18/01/2024 20:50

@WagWoofWalkMeeoow she said she pushed her in a buggy from the shop to the car, I said why didn't she lay a coat over her for the walk to the car? Then lift her out of the buggy to the car and lay her coat back over her. I'm not sure how you've gotten so confused by that 🤣

fourlambbhunas · 18/01/2024 20:52

@WagWoofWalkMeeoow I'm not bellyaching about them putting her in a buggy 🤣 you've completely misread my message. In what world would I be saying put the pram in the car seat? How many wines did you have with dinner??

StuckintheRutt · 18/01/2024 20:52

My dc also took socks off wriggled out of tights, threw coats off and are warm blooded.
